AJ was helpful in many areas. We needed an all around handyman and he did a great job with all we needed help with. He also charged a very reasonable price. He charged us half of what a plumber would have to install a new kitchen sink. He was also able to fix a fan chain for us and install a new faucet in our bathroom. He was timely and very responsive via e-mail.

I had a complete kitchen remodel and needed a plumber to move my old sink line, put in a new disposal and dishwasher to a new location on an adjacent wall along with a line for my refrigerator. I then added on a new outside spiket to the job as well. Steve was very professional and polite. He also helped me install a piece for my cabinets. He beat out everyone else's bids by far. He earned my respect so much that we hired him for our bathroom remodel that we will be starting soon. Thanks Steve for all your hard work and patience. See you soon!

I got some new kitchen cabinets super cheap i could not pass them up. Every where i called to get a quote to get them installed they might as well taken my first born. I seen Horners renovations on facebook and sent them a message on what i needed done. Kyle the owner called me back swiftly and came to my house to see what he was getting to. The price he quoted me at was right in my price range. He got right to work the next day. Not only does my kitchen look wonderful and at a great price, they were so courteous. They cleaned up better than i would have. Thank you so much my family and i love our new kitchen.

We hired Empire to finish our basement and remodel the bathroom. After some initial back and forth regarding the cost of the project, we were able to come to an agreement. The project was a $15-20k in total cost, which is a big deal for us. They were very helpful and worked to ease our concerns about cost, design, and choices. They were upfront about what is possible based on the budget and what needed to be cut and even offered helpful tips and suggestions. Overall the work turned out great and we are happy with the results. Would hire Empire for future projects.

PBQ did a fantastic job - they took care of every detail and didn't get angry or change my costs when I changed my mind or added things. I absolutely love my bathroom & would recommend them to everyone. Paul had some great ideas that I never thought about and they turned out great. I plan on doing some work in my kitchen within the next year and hope they are available.

Jay was very easy to communicate with and we were really happy with his work and professionalism. Jay cut into the wall between our dining room and kitchen in order to build out a butcher block island/peninsula. We felt very comfortable having Jay in our home and will definitely use him again in the future.

They really did everything right! Estimate came quickly AND they finished the project on budget (how often does that happen)? Brandon was very responsive with questions when I was buying materials, even if I asked on weekends. They arrived for the job on time, were SUPER clean throughout (I kept hearing the shop vac go so they could minimize dust), left us high quality work and talked us through options (like grout width for tiling on floor), and finished the project on time too. They were flexible with scheduling since the project was to redo a laundry room and we were selling the washer and dryer, which wasn't set yet. I'm extremely happy with our experience and would definitely ask them to help us again in the future, so I'd highly recommend Glanton Contractors.

Renee is so much fun to work with, easy to talk to, with a great eye for interior design! I was afraid to work with a designer, but she made me feel like I was talking to a friend. If you're looking for help with your home, look no further, you will love working with her and her team.

Nichols & Associates

Anthony Nichols of Nichols and Associates has completed two major projects for our family. The first project was an oak built-in book shelf unit spanning ten (10) feet with closed storage cabinets. The second project was a combination desk unit with book case shelves and closed storage cabinets to match the book shelves built previously. The desk unit spans approximately eight (8) feet. Mr. Nichols surprised me by including two file case drawers in the desk unit. Anthony Nichols exceeded our expectations in the design, development and execution of the projects. He provided valuable advice and consult on design ideas for both oak units and installation was completed with minimal disruption. In addition to providing quality work, Anthony Nichols is a person we trust and respect. He is conscientious, thoughtful, patient and considerate. Also, he has completed other small projects for us such as installation of storm/screen door. Pat

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.
