Joe showed up right on time and went right at diagnosing our HVAC unit problem. He was friendly and transparent about everything from the very start with the first thumbtack message right down to the final evaluation. Our fan motor being the issue, he was straight up about how much it would cost for him to fix it. The BEST part was that he told me what would entail, how to do it, and where to buy the part right here in town if I felt handy enough to do it. He didn't try to push a story about how it was something only a professional should do without blowing up the house, or sell us on buying the part from his shop. He didn't even want me to pay for the consultation (even though I wasn't going to let him leave without at least a donation toward his Buy Yourself A Nice Lunch fund). It was a truly refreshing thing to find a service professional that was honest and wasn't trying to sell us on anything other than the hope that our AC situation would be fixed. His diagnosis alone was what gave me the confidence to try a last ditch effort on a DIY repair, now that I knew what part needed focusing on as the root of the problem, and I ended up getting it all working without even needing a replacement part. Without a doubt, I will be coming to Joe for any repairs that are beyond my novice handyman hobbying abilities from here on out.

We couldn't get our furnace to come on and thought it was a problem with the pilot light. After just a couple of minutes, Frank isolated a problem with our thermostat. The experience with Frank was great from the very beginning. When calling for an appointment, the customer service was very pleasant. There were evening and weekend hours for the same as daily rates and accommodated my schedule. Frank was right on time. He was personable, efficient, and informative. He found our problem quickly and took care of it promptly and for a very reasonable price. I will be recommending Frank's Heating and Air Conditioning to all my friends and family.

Jamel, the owner of the company has been great to work with at my multiple units I own and operate in Covington, ky. I understand that property owners like the convenience of bigger hvac companies and we are afraid to take a risk with the smaller guys. However, by taking a risk and putting my trust in Jamel, it has saved me thousands of $$$. Highly recommend for any furnace, boiler, water heater, plumbing, etc maintenance and install.

Thomas from Arrow Head Heating and his personnel did a superb job! Their attention to detail and quality of work that I observed with the finished garage heater installation definitely made me 100% satisfied. Thomas even gave me a courtesy call the following day to make sure the heater unit was still functioning correctly. Thanks again Thomas for a wonderful experience!

American Heating was amazing!! They installed a new furnace, heat pump, humidifier, and air cleaner AND removed the old huge furnace. They cleaned up at the end of the day and I couldn't even tell that they had been in my home. My new furnace has saved me so much money this year and it keeps the house a nice warm temperature! Brian did an amazing job. He replaced my AC and Furnace. He had the help of one other guy and they were both very respectful, they did exactly as they promised. When ever I had a question they were more than happy to help and give me several different options of things I could do and what was best for my budget. I am very pleased with their work and would recommend them for future work.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
