I was very pleased with the snow removal from our drive, walkway and front porch. They were prompt and professional. I will certainly use them again.

He came out quickly did an estimate. Scheduled immediately and completed the work in one day. I was pretty satisfied. Mike ripped out an old deck and put a small porch/deck in for me. I would have given 5 stars but I took off one point because after installing the new deck I there were 2 minor minor complaints that there was a little lip on one board that made the plank 1 cm higher so there was slight unevenness, the other thing was that the rail he put in had splinters so there were rough spots in places. He had no issue sanding that and repaired the lip with a power sander now the deck is smooth. My other issue was that I didn't know my deck wouldn't be stained and sealed. So for anyone who gets a quote make sure you know EVERYTHING that is included. That was my only disappointment in the end is that I still need to do that. I would use Mike again, I would just be very clear on communication so I know what will be included in the price.

We hired Vinnie to replace screens on our back porch and to power wash and stain our deck. It took several days to remove all of the stain and when he finished power washing, he sanded and applied the stain and it looks great! We came up with a few other things that needed to be repaired and he took care of them too. He's such a nice guy and did excellent work. There are always things that need to be done that my husband and I can't handle so we will definitely be calling Vinnie back. Thanks so much!

He designed and built a gorgeous porch over a hot and useless space. I believe he has posted the pictures on his site. He turned a barren patio into a haven! We love it! It is extremely well-built, classic and beautiful! We highly recommend this company for any project.

Over the past two years Dennis has done several repair and upgrade jobs in my home. I have been completely happy with the end result of all work done. My first encounter with Dennis’s handiwork was following an unfortunate experience where an icemaker water line had been incorrectly installed in the floor along with some new bamboo flooring. The water line leaked and caused extensive water damage to my kitchen and living room flooring. He discovered that, #1, the new subflooring was incorrectly installed and (#2) the water line for the icemaker was inadequate, had been damaged during installation and not been connected properly. He installed a new copper water line in a safer location with a safety shut off at the source and another shutoff behind the refrigerator, put down new subflooring and reinstalled my bamboo flooring as though it had never been taken up. Dennis also installed all new custom interior doors throughout my residence as well as a reclaimed solid wood door with a full window that leads to my balcony. Three other contractors had told me that this door could not be installed and that I should just purchase a new door. It now looks great and is just what I wanted! Another project was removing some old, outdated, ceramic tile that surrounded my fireplace and served as a hearth (not an easy job). I chose some natural stone to replace this and extended the “hearth” area the full length of the wall. He did a beautiful job! Other projects DA BARND Construction has done for me include a complete removal of popcorn ceiling with retexture and paint; window, door and base trim; they oversaw new carpet installation; replaced all electrical outlets and switches, as well as installing some additional outlets and switches; full room paint jobs; bathroom remodel; and currently extending my deck. Dennis has proven to be honest and forthcoming in all my dealings with him. I feel that he is really an advocate for me, trying to give me the best deal but also providing quality workmanship. He shows up on time, cleans up his worksite and is very professional. I intend to hire him again and again and highly recommend him above any other contractor. I don’t worry about the quality of his work. If it’s personal service you need… Salvage a stalled remodel project… Someone reliable... This is the guy!

I am beyond ECSTATIC! Noah with KNOC Construction responded to my Thumbtack request SUPER fast with a quote. I was originally going to just hire them to clean my gutters, but ended up hiring them on the spot to do about 5-6 additional jobs. Noah and Aaron were extremely polite, punctual and very knowledgeable. In addition to cleaning our gutters, they also mowed our lawn, edged up, put down mulch, trimmed and shaped up our box woods, repaired our back porch steps/railing and trimmed up a couple trees. The finished product was absolutely gorgeous! I can't remember the last time our yard has looked this nice. PLUS, we also have Noah and Aaron coming back to do some additional work for us later this week. They are very reasonably priced. We highly recommend KNOC Construction!!

I had deck repairs and painting performed. Rick came out and gave me the quote. We went with Ozmar because of the gut feeling. They were not the lowest bid, not the highest, but felt comfortable with them. They started the project and upon repairing the deck found sections of rotted wood/carpenter ant nest. They redid these sections and you would never know by looking as it was an exact match. They painted the entire deck (this is a large deck with a pergola). The crews were great and they left the area clean when they left. I would highly recommend Ozmar Field Services to my friends and neighbors. They truly cared about my satisfaction and that really meant a lot!

We are very pleased with our experience with Zeb Fouty Builders! We needed a new porch/deck on the front of the house to replace the small, unsafe, stoop we had out into the fenced front yard. We decided to use composite decking and railing, and there were some challenges getting the supplies. Most items were special order so if one item was missed on the order it caused a delay. The job did take a little longer than originally planned, but the wait was well worth it as we got a beautiful, sturdy new deck for our home. We will be calling Zeb if we have any additional work that needs done around the house.

Mike did a great job power washing our house, painting our exterior trim, repairing some loose siding and staining our new porch and deck. We also had Mike and his crew do some demo work inside as we prepared for some remodeling and decorating. I know he is very experienced in plumbing jobs also.

My wife and I hired Ryan Maguire to paint a newly constructed front porch spanning the entire width of our house. From beginning to end, he was professional and courteous, did an outstanding job, and at a fair price. When the job started, he made sure he knew exactly what we wanted and executed precisely as we asked. The entire project took a week to complete and throughout, Ryan kept us updated on his progress and offered his own ideas for tweaks and adjustments that improved the look of our paint scheme. He and his brother Kevin were very meticulous in performing the work and the end product looks very clean and professionally done. They made sure the project site was picked up and orderly after every workday. What stood out most is that it seemed as though he conducted the job with the same care as if it were his own property. Ryan communicated very well and made sure we were satisfied with all of the work completed before asking for final payment. I highly recommend hiring him.

I was introduced to John Corry by Randy Best, one of the top commercial real estate brokers in Columbus, which says a lot about John's dependability. I acquired a 24 unit building in South Columbus and John was there to help me rehab each unit one by one. He also did a great deal of welding work on a series of exterior steel porches that needed extensive repairs. John can pretty much do anything including HVAC, plumbing and electric as well as general handyman work, and he does it well and for a reasonable price. One of his greatest assets is that I can trust him to go in and quote a project, send me before and after pictures, and get it down in a reasonable amount of time, all while I am out of state, which says a lot about his trustworthiness and reliability.

Jamie was great . He was here when he said he would be. He worked fast and my yard was cleaner when he left than when he got here. I wasn't building a big deck , but I thought it would at least take one day ,but Jamie was in and out start to finish by 1:30 ,and my deck is awesome. I already have my table set. I would definitely use him again.

Tim had powerwashed and refinished my porch and deck. I am amazed at how much better they look now. They came out much better than I expected. I previously had used him for some indoor painting and renovations. He was very thorough and completed the projects just as we had discussed. He was friendly and easy to work with. I will use him again on my next projects.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
