I put out a request for contractors to review a balcony renovation and to bid on the first phase of removing all the wood tongue and groove ceiling on all 3 balconies (approx 1000 sq ft) Xclusive Home was the first to respond with availability as well as informing me that there is a no cost evaluation to obtain an estimate. Mr. Collier arrived on time, was extremely courteous and professional, took his time to review and analyze the balconies and after spending approximately 45 minutes explaining what he saw and how best to move forward, substantiated that he has the knowledge and skill in his field. After 3 additional contractor reviews, Xclusive Home offered the most competitive bid and was awarded the job. I highly recommend Mr. Collier and his team.

I had deck repairs and painting performed. Rick came out and gave me the quote. We went with Ozmar because of the gut feeling. They were not the lowest bid, not the highest, but felt comfortable with them. They started the project and upon repairing the deck found sections of rotted wood/carpenter ant nest. They redid these sections and you would never know by looking as it was an exact match. They painted the entire deck (this is a large deck with a pergola). The crews were great and they left the area clean when they left. I would highly recommend Ozmar Field Services to my friends and neighbors. They truly cared about my satisfaction and that really meant a lot!

I needed work done to prepare my home for sale; it was in Powell. I had three contractors bid on the jobs; on all jobs, Mark was the lowest or near the lower amount. The work included basement work, backyard decking, and sub- flooring. I was extremely pleased with the work that was done, and the quality of his work was reflected in the sale price and comments of those that saw the home.

Safeguard finished the upstairs of my barn to be used as a schoolroom. Their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and knowledge is well above any contractor I've used in the past. It's hard to find reliable contractors who won't try to up sell you and are honest. You pay for what you get and Chancie delivers the best. I will definitely use them for all my future projects.

Alan has truly come through and helped me out while in a bind. I am an out of state landlord and needed some major drywall repair on a unit. Alan gave me the best price and started the job within a couple days. His work ethic, quality, and professionalism are outstanding. It's hard to find an honest contractor but I swear I just hit the jackpot. Alan is an all around good dude and already feels like a friend. I consider myself lucky that he is working on this project for me. Thanks Alan!!!

John was very professional, courteous, answered all my questions, and was here at the time he said he would be. We've owned our home for seven years. I have been able to find something I didn't like about the work with every contractor who has helped us with any household repair. Not so with John. I am very picky. I have never before said this but his work was PERFECT. He was just great. I am confident you will be thrilled with any work he does for you. The price was right too!

Nathan was nothing short of absolutely outstanding. We had so many contractors submit estimates for a ton of projects for our salon renovation. Nathan was prompt and the first person to submit a bid complete with accurate measurements and drawings. His price was amazing but we hired him because of his attention to detail, even just in the estimate and design phase. When we actually started the work he gave us an accurate timeline and kept us updated on what was happening since we live out of town. Anytime we had a change for him he took it in stride and did the new work quickly. We will hire him again for our next salon opening and hopefully our houses we renovate this year. Do yourself a favor and hire him he’s amazing. I’ll add photos to this review shortly.

I'm a retired remodeling contractor but still do work at a slower pace. I found Super Plumbers through Thumbtack, my regular plumber wasn't available. I can say this will be the plumbing company I will call in the future. They responded quickly, work was excellent, timely and charge was right in line with what they accomplished. I would highly recommend them. Ray Kocheran President of Innovative-Surfaces & Custom Remodeling

When Centex built our home in 2003, they went cheap and instead of using a pipe that fit, they soldered extensively behind the wall to our shower to make the pipes fit. When we went to replace the leaking shower head, we found this issue. The soldering had broke and needed to be repaired. We hired, after hiring several other contractors, Blessed, to come fix the issue. I corresponded with April, the owner, and arranged for the service. Bill called about 30 minutes out and arrived on time. I showed the Bill the problem, and he immediately knew what was the issue and how to fix it. I am currently on crutches so I was hesitant as I could not get in and out of the basement to turn off the water. Not needed. Bill was able to remove the old soldering, install a coupling, etc - and do all that plumbing stuff that I have no clue how to do. Long story short, he was done in about an hour and the cost was $25 less than he had quoted. He advised what small items we needed to do ourselves (he could have, but I asked if we could finish this part) to get the shower working - install face plate, and handle, etc. Note, others had given me estimates of a low of $500 up to over $1K. We found Blessed Plumbing also on the Blue Pages (Christian yellow pages) and were very confident with his work. He even gave some other suggestions on issues we were having (water hammer) and offered some maintenance advice on our aging sump pump. I enjoyed my encounter with this company and would not hesitate to call on them again for any plumbing problem we encounter. It is hard and rare to find honest people/contractors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
