Jack came out to the house to do the repairs the next day and was on time and gave me an estimate and I asked if he could do the repairs the same day and he said yes. The price was fair and the work he and Clarence did on the house was excellent. They did a roof repair, door repair and some plumbing work. Would use this company again and recommend to others.

John always does a top quality job. He has done house inspections for my real estate customers and is very thorough with his inspection and delivers a email report with excellent pictures of the items inspected. He also is a precision painter. He can paint without taping and still not mess up the lines. He also does electrical work, plumbing, etc. All is done with great expertise. His work and knowledge of the workings of houses is top shelf.

We were having a problem with (hot) water pressure and I "assumed" it had something to do with the 25+ year old water heater we had. It was still heating water sufficiently but the pressure was dwindling. Initially I contacted plumbers near me, but after feeling as though I was "inconveniencing" them with my "minor" problem (they said my 3 year old shower faucet was to blame) I turned to Thumbtack. Bryan Ody with The Plumbing Tree was not only quick to respond, but was persistent with offering to help! Bryan again not only came out right away, but alerted us to other problems we had! He gave us a very reasonable quote to remedy all the issues AND was back within a day to fix them all!! I can not speak higher of a company than The Plumbing Tree!! Thank you again!!! 😊

I found Jim's service by posting for some plumbing help on my community Facebook page. He returned my call promptly and came for estimate same day. He and his helper Chuck not only helped me with my hot water tank replacement, they also repaired my outside spigot and cleaned out my water lines. The following day my kitchen sink faucet became too clogged and they were there within an hour and helped replace that too. Very professional and extremely well priced. I now have him on speed dial for all my home fixit emergencies.

Craig was great. He had to make two trips because the project scope was bigger than we thought. He did it cheerfully and even threw in some plumbing parts at no charge. He is our new “go to” handyman. Very good dude.

I purchased a home in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. The house and garage were condemned and scheduled to be torn down by the city. The house was a detriment to this beautiful neighborhood. Mike and his crew at MK Design Build redesigned and rebuilt the entire home. They had to replace all of the plumbing, wiring, interior walls, roof, front porch, back porch, doors, windows, and refinish the hardwood floors. MK Design Build finished this house ahead of schedule and under budget. Now this is the best looking house on the street. When the crew at MK design build refinished the house it looked and smelled brand-new. Sadly, the garage was too far gone to rebuild so Mike and his crew demolished it and hauled every piece of it away. The next project I have planned is to have MK Design Build rebuild the garage for me and we're going to turn it into a man cave! Can't wait, super job Mike.

Bill is amazing. After suffering from water backup that did extensive basement damage, Bill put us on the right path with a high-end, redundant pump and redundant battery solution to guard against future water damage. Bill is professional without being pushy. He knowledgeably walks through possible solutions, expresses his opinion, and let’s you choose accordingly. He installed quickly and thoroughly. I feel confident recommending Bill from Shamrock Plumbing for any of your plumbing needs or nightmares.

Great communication throughout project, satisfied with quality of craftsmanship and completed project in a timely manner. We had another full bathroom added in our basement, initially just wanted him to do the rough in plumbing and electrical and ended up letting him do the whole job including finishing the other half of our basement. Ended up saving money and our personal contractor whom we would gladly refer to our friends and family. Thanks again Kevin.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
