Aaron and his team did an outstanding job in replacing dry wall, adding shelves and cabinets, painting and generally restoring my garage. They were timely, kept me informed, accommodated schedule changes due to coordinating other work, professional and everything was done to perfection. I highly recommend them.

Kent and his daughter Betsy showed up on time, were very personable, and did a great job! I asked them to install a security light above the outside of our garage, and a dimmer switch inside the house. I would definitely hire Kent for another job.

I used SS for electronical work to hook up a hot tub and straighten out the electrical panel in the garage of the home we just purchased. They were professional and their quote was spot on at the end of the job. I will use them in the future.

Costa Pro LLC is a top notch company. The wind storm in march did a number on my roof, not only did they strip the old roof off, they replaced my fascia and replaced the roof, all in one day. I got quotes from other companies, but Costa Pro had the most affordable prices and a warranty that lasts double everyone else's. The exterior of my home was in need of repair as well, and Costa Pro LLC was up for the task. They put in new vinyl soffits, and the opening around my garage door. Costa Pro also painted the exterior and trim of my house, and replaced my leaking gutters. My house went from the worst on my street, to the best. I have gotten nothing but compliments from all my neighbors. I can't thank Will and everyone else at Costa Pro LLC enough for everything they did for me and my family. I strongly recommend Costa Pro LLC.

Mr. Morris completed 4 jobs for me covering a three month period. 1) Involved rennovating my enclosed back porch by putting in a ceiling, removed/replaced surrounding screens & door, removed/repaired wood frames, installed electric wiring & put in a ceiling fan/light for first time, painting of woodframes, sealing bottom base bricks, and fixing gutters. Excellent job. 2) Installed gutters on garage for rain off, re-roofed garage & installed ventilation at top of roof. Well done! 3) Installed gutter brackets, repaired damage wood, repaired & fixed front house gutters for rain off. 4) Re-balancing of garage beams and adjusted tracks of garage door to prevent jamming or inconsistency of door opening or closing. All jobs were pre-appraised, with an estimate delivered within several days. Mr. Morris was very professional , detailed & courteous in explaining each job, cost, and timeframes. He exceeded all my expectations, in quality, timeliness, & proficiency, completing each job ahead of schedule. He cleaned up each area after completion of job very well. Partial monies paid up front and balance of bill not due until I did a walk thru & stated satisfaction of work done. I have told Mr. Morris that I will be retaining his phone number in my directory for future home repairs and have no concerns about referring him to my neighbors because of his professionalism and the quality of his work.

I met Ron and the Francis Construction Group through a friend who insisted I use Ron for a bedroom remodel and a new roof. Ron is very professional, very informative and his team are very respectful and extremely talented. After the Ron Francise Construction Group finished my roof, I had my father come take a look. He immediately called Ron to put a full flat roof on is 4600 square-foot commercial building. Attitude pricing and timing. The RJ Francis Construction Group gets four stars from my father my friend and myself who have all used his services.

From start to finish, Mike and his co-worker Nick were the ideal handymen. I had two projects: re-hanging some loose siding, and scraping/painting the front of a garage. Mike responded with a good quote for labor right away, and then he and Nick were able to start the very next morning. They showed up when promised and did both jobs efficiently and excellently. I couldn't be more happy, and I'll definitely use them on future projects.

TQC added a bedroom and bath to our home. The job actually carved out this addition in the back of existing huge garage, but this made it a challenge to get everything in within the existing frame. TQC did a fantastic job from the first plans to refinements and actual execution. The core people and those they get to do e.g. plumbing were great to work with, very responsive to us as owners, very thoughtful. Recommend highly for high quality work and great team

We had Richard of Horn Construction come over for an estimate. Our job was to mud/tape/prime and paint drywall that we had installed in our garage. Not only was he prompt, but his estimate was very fair. We were impressed that he started the very next Monday on our job. Richard and his team are real pro's. He was able to completely hide our seams and finished the drywall like we never would have been able to. If you're looking for a contractor that has a fine attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend Horn Construction.

My company is owner operated so its all hands on and personal for me, not just an owner here to collect profits. I also take a lot of pride in every job i do as if i was working on my own house.

About

I specialize in general garage-door and entry-door repair and installation. Residential customers are prefered. I also install garage door openers and storm doors. If you have a door that is sticking and/or just not working properly, give me a call. I was a professional door installer for over five years before I started working for Ford Motor Co., and I still work on repairing doors in my spare time. I have been an employee at Ford for more than 16 years, so I am dedicated to work. Quality work is important to me. I travel 50 miles (at the most) to some jobs, but prefer to keep it close (up to 25 miles). I am trying to have my little business expand and become a household name.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
