Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

I really needed the tile hand cleaned because the machine that was brought in was too big and barely fit in my bathrooms and my tile was freshly installed.

Tile work looks amazing, would highly recommend!

Brandon accepted the job on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and did the work that Monday and Tuesday. Really great experience for me after having been stood up my MULTIPLE tile guys. He was right on time, communicated well, and did the job exactly as I asked. Worked by himself ALL day on Monday (holiday!) and had a helper on Tuesday. He probably could have done a more detailed job with the tile work (using spacers and cutting the tile better), but I was in a time crunch and didn’t really care. He removed old tile and put down new tile in my 40 sq ft bathroom. Will hire again for sure. Timeliness and reliability are hard to come by!

Hired James Marsala of Italian Stone Works to tile a kitchen floor and back splash. He tiled the floor but left a large area around a floor vent with no tile and now NO vent cover will fit without being busted out and retiled. He also did the backsplash on new installation and the tiles are not even; they are also inset deeper in areas and pulled out in others. SERIOUSLY!!?? FINALLY, AFTER MANY TEXTS, HE TEXT ME BACK ABOUT FIXING IT AND TELLS ME HE WAS GOING OUT OF TOWN FOR A COUPLE WEEKS. HE GETS BACK AND TELLS ME HE HAS BEEN IN A WRECK, IT WILL BE A COUPLE MORE WEEKS. IT HAS NOW BEEN A MONTH SINCE THE "ACCIDENT" AND 2 MONTHS SINCE THE BACKSPLASH. WHICH IS IT? NO PRIDE IN YOUR WORK OR NO INTEGRITY?

Italian Stone Works (ISW) remodeled my outdated bathroom. They installated porcelain tile on the floor, walls, bath tub/shower, and a glass tile stripe on three walls of the shower and glass tile on the ceiling. ISW also installed a beautiful new granite counter top and backsplash. They did a very nice professional job within a reasonable length of time and made sure we understood the steps all the way throughout the remodel. All issues were resolved and the job was completed as agreed. We would not hesitate to use Italian Stone Works again.

James is very skilled in his trade. He was on time, thorough, very knowledgeable, and saved me time and money by creatively suggesting options to avoid needless demolition with tile products I was unaware of. Would hire again!

JM was very responsive and timely with their work. For the most part, the floors look great. My only complaint is they did a really poor job with replacing the base boards and other finishing touches. I realize this may not be a part of their job description. However, because the base boards were not tacked back in there is now a big gap between the tile and base board which will have to be filled in. Also, after tiling, the transition piece did not set flush with the wood floor, which caused the grout to crack within the first few days.

Very happy with the finished product. Crew arrived a little late due to previous job, but they called ahead to make sure I was aware they were running late. Tile and grout looks 10x better than before. Night and day difference. Crew was friendly, polite, and respectful.

Family owned company, Gustavo (the brother/ owner son) performed the work. He was very personable, polite, and took pride in his work. He encountered unexpected challenges (old non-square house, tile inconsistencies, etc.) but recommended solutions to make it look right. I'm very pleased with the work, will use company in the future.

Chris did a great job on the tile repair in the bathroom. In addition he moved and replaced an electric outlet and switched out the sink faucet which required some additional plumbing work. I feel like I got great value because I was able to get the work done using one guy instead of three.

Dustin was a pleasure to work with and he went above and beyond to satisfy us. My job turned out more complex than he anticipated, but he completed it without a single complaint! He removed tile and had to grind down and replace - his cleanup was impeccable and his work ethic is above what we expected. We were on a deadline to get the floor done before the painters came & He even came on the weekend without an up charge. We have saved his contact info and will most definitely be using DNA Maintenance again! Sherry and Steve Fulkerson Moore, Oklahoma

JM Construction did a very nice job installing the tile in my small bathroom remodel, but they were always late to the job or missed appointments and it took them over a month to the work and they never finished the detailing-caulking/touch ups/cleanups. They said they would do things that were not done-remove a bathroom cabinet and make a laundry basket hutch, change the bathroom door to open away from the bathroom,,, Please only have one bathroom in my house, so ai couldn’t stay at my house for a month and they never finished their work. They would never come when they’d say they would come and I’d often drive over to the house twice a day to meet them and they would never be there.
