We hired Juan and Anibel Grimaux to totally repaint our entire house inside and outside, and we are so glad we did!!! With the kids grown, we decided to totally remodel the inside of our home. Juan and Anibel have truly transformed our home from very badly in need of attention to absolutely stunningly gorgeous!!! They give great attention to every little detail to make the job perfect! They are extremely careful to protect everything in your home as they paint! Their work is outstanding and they are very reasonable. They are so very happy to help with anything you need help with. Most importantly, they are extremely good and extremely kind people—you will feel completely comfortable and truly enjoy having them in your home! We will never hire another painter because they have truly been perfect in their work and so easy to work with!! We would very strongly recommend them for any job big or small—you will be so happy you hired them!!! Justin Blunt is a licensed electrician and knows his business. He walked in the door and in minutes had our problem fixed. He listened to what we said, diagnosed the issue, and fixed it on the spot. We hired him to come back and do more electric work for our current remodel. In addition, he is just a "good guy"--the kind of man you would want to come to your home. He is professional, prompt, and a hard worker, doing outstanding work! Moreover, his pricing is fair and certainly worth every penny!

Bryan Trent calls himself a "Handyman"--however, while both handy, as well as a man with tremendous integrity and character, he exceeds this label. Bryan came to us on the heels of four different construction-remodelers, providing an excellent comparison pool. In short, Bryan Trent has now been finishing our 1200 square foot remodel, and we have hired him as our permanent Handyman. More specifically, allow me to describe his particular skills and abilities for others considering his employment. 1) His construction skills are outstanding--we have been most impressed with the mantel, completion of our deck, mirror trimout, and hardware mounting on decorative wooden panels he made; 2) He can and will do most anything asked of him. If he is not heavily skilled in an area, he finds resources that prep him to complete special projects, such as the installation of a screen door on double panel patio doors, raising our treadmill to proper height with a wooden block design, and trimming the kitchen with retro moulding, to name a few; 3) While not a licensed plumber, he has skills in this area as well. As stated, he can fix most anything; 4) He took his time to insure high caliber work, respected our property (and we are extremely particular about this!...e.g., he wears "booties" over his shoes when walking on our new carpet)--and our time. 5) He offers a very fair price. After numerous contractors and construction personnel, we would, and have, hired Bryan Trent as our "Handyman," but he is really a contractor, carpenter, plumber, and whatever meets your needs. While working for you, he will afford you respect, listen to your needs, communicate with you concerning your wants, and give you his very best effort. We could not be more pleased to have found and hired, Mr. Bryan Trent via Thumbtack. If you do the same, he will not dissapoint.

Overall we had a great experience with M & K homes. We dealt with Mark and we really appreciate the professionalism and punctuality he had. We did a remodel project for a house to sell it and the textures on the drywall matched exactly and the popcorn spray that he did matched exactly. Everything that we did during our remodel looked excellent !! We have been let down by contractor after contractor so we really appreciate the time consciousness that Mark had. He promised that it would be done at a certain time and it was done at that time even though we had to put in some late nights when we ran into some issues!! Would highly recommend!!

We had a whole house remodel (4800 sq ft w/22ft ceilings) and fearful from past contractir nightmares. Finding a contractor that could do everything we needed was going to be tough. I have high standards since I was a contractor many years ago. Finding a craftsman that could work under my standards and our specific conditions seemed impossible. Furthermore, we had time deadlines that we wanted to meet and pretty sure it wasnt going to happen . Not only did they meet our deadlines and quality standards, they did it at a better price than I thought possible!! I never hired a contractor that was better! P.S. They literally worked night and day on a change order to help us surprise family member for his birthday. Character is most important to me for a contractor, since they are in my home with my family and I am depending on them. I never worried one time when they were on the job, and always left the place spotless! I actually look forward to next time they do work for us!

I hired Chris Whitestone (Two Feathers Construction, LLC) to repair a number of things around my house and to build shelves for my file boxes. He did everything from remodeling my kitchen to exterminating the carpenter bees that has taken up residence in my house's eaves. While restoring a section of my fence, he encountered a significant amount of water that had pooled under the house. He tackled the job professionally. He pumped out a huge amount of water until the hole was dry, then poured cement around the fence post and back-filled the hole. After three years, there is no sign of water in the area. He also put up a number of shelves of all sizes and shapes in my garage, utilizing all of the available wall space. In my kitchen, he rebuilt some of the cabinets, refinished all of the cabinet doors and walls, and installed a new cabinet, a vent hood, and a dishwasher. Additionally, he designed and built 4 five-shelf units on coasters which hold 15 file boxes each. The boxes weigh about forty pounds apiece. Although the shelves are built for strength, they are also very attractive. I found that he could design and build or install just about anything I needed. I was quite impressed with the quality of his work.

Zack has performed a wide range of work for me from as simple as changing light bulbs I couldn't reach, repairing door knobs and some assistance with yard work. He also cleared out my storage building and things I needed removed from my garage and hauled the debris to the disposal site. He assisted in the demolition of my kitchen to make way for a remodel. He built a large shelving system in my garage for storage. He has also done caulking and general maintenance I have asked of him. He also found a buyer for a car I no longer needed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
