Project: Fir and Sheetrock two fireplaces and a full-story chimney that runs up the center of the house to the top of our vaulted ceilings in a mid-century house. Starting bid: $3500. Final Price: $4650. So there are a few good things and a LOT of bad things about my experience with Alberto and his crew... Let's start with the good: - The work was passable and competitively priced - Drywall work was very good - Half of his crew was awesome - They worked hard at the end to finish in time The bad: - Poor management - No license - Disrespectful to the house: there was ZERO attempt at covering the carpet or flooring. No plastic was put on the furniture and drywall work makes DUST, I mean bad dust... I literally was running around covering everything last second after a quick run to home depot to buy plastic and drop clothes. I mean it was pretty bad, thank goodness I was there. I've been in the house for a short year and a half and had bought new couch and chairs to furnish the house so to not cover obviously new furniture is a huge mistake. The first day they just walked onto the carpet with their work boots on without a care. On my second floor I just had new LVP (luxury vinyl plank - like a waterproof engineered hardwood) installed days before they arrived. I had to go out myself, buy construction paper and lay it down. They left nails, tools, drywall knives everywhere, some of which permanently scratched the floor. I confronted them several times about their cleanliness and they just ignored me. - They broke my vacuum and lied about it. They worked late the last night to meet our deadline (I had family coming in). I was in my bedroom at around 2am when I heard my Dyson V7 cordless vacuum going. I came out to tell them not to use it, but it was too late. I mean who uses a cordless to clean a drywall mess? The vacuum is toast. Drywall and drywall dust was stuck everywhere in the vacuum and the motor was whining in a really bad way and I had lost about 50% suction. I mean even shop vacs even require a special filter for drywall dust... I confronted the only fluent English-speaking crew member and they denied the crew used it. I had to buy a new one for $400. They also used my Miele without permission. Luckily that only needed a filter/bag change to bring it back to life. - Pricing issues: Several times in discussing prices with Alberto, I don't think he understood the conversation because of a language barrier. He agreed to prices and then went back on them when it came time to pay. My original bid went up more than a thousand dollars by the end. I was crystal clear about what I wanted from the start and half way through the job they broke it to me that the second floor would be another $1000, I talked them down to $700. I had no choice but to pay because I had family coming later that week and couldn't have my younger guests staying in a construction mess... My opinion is if you can't fully comprehend English, then get someone to translate for you before agreeing to business deals. I would NEVER attempt to speak Spanish in making business deals because I have limited understanding of the language. E.g., I asked them to paint when they were done. He quoted me $450. I asked if supplies were included with that price, he said yes. Keep in mind this was a chimney, not a whole room or anything. I told him I had already bought the paint and asked if I could deduct that from the price. He said yes. At the time to pay he billed me the original $450. I tried to argue but it wasn't worth the $200 in frustration. Also my original quote was $3500. It went up to $4200 (not including the $450 for paint) by the end. - Some tile work is iffy with some noticeable mistakes - They claimed they would have it done in 3 days. It took 5. Conclusion: I am happy with the drywall work and the tile work is good on the main floor but lacking on the second floor. I would NOT recommend Alberto to friends and family based on my total experience. I feel bad because a few of the people he had working for him were awesome dudes with talent and I don't want to take away from their business but I think they still have much to learn about proper customer service and anyone looking to hire them needs to know the truth.
