Zeev promptly responded to my request within 2 hours for plumbing repair on a leaky pipe under my sink. He exceeded my expectations by arriving later in the day and fixed the leaking! Zeev went out of his way to go to Ace Hardware to pick up a part that would fix my issue. I highly recommend Zeev for any plumbing needs!

John and his crew worked on a new rental home my husband and I bought back in November. He put up a new fence, built an amazing entertainers dream deck, gutted both the master bathroom and the terribly dated kitchen. The finished product left me speechless. From the counters to the cabinets to the fixtures and all the way to the wood choice on the deck it was a smooth, carefree process. I was so amazed with his professionalism and communication through the whole construction that I called him back to put in tile and flooring. The house is so beautiful that we almost disn't want to rent it but move in ourselves. This was our first rental house flip; we are in the process of looking for another home to fix up and when we do, we definitely plan on calling John and the guys at A&C to get the job done. I highly recommend to all my friends and family without any hesitation. Job well done!!

Keenie was amazing! He is very knowledgeable and was able to diagnose our problem right away. We know very little about home repairs and we're very intimidated by doing major projects. We had a corroded pipe that needed to be replaced and he gave us the most simple and cheapest solution first. He returned to the house for multiple days in a row to try to unscrew the pipe. Unfortunately, our simple job ended up being more labor intensive than we expected but Keenie pulled through! He finished the job very quickly and was very honest about everything. We would highly recommend him and would hire him again for future projects!

Tim did a great job repairing a hole in the drywall in our dining area. His pricing was reasonable and he was very accommodating with my schedule. The repair was done quickly and blends in nicely with the rest of the wall. If you're looking for someone professional and reliable, Tim is your guy!

I don't know if they truly offer the best price, but the plumber who did my repairs was certainly the fastest I have ever seen. I had some repairs that were required in a purchase agreement when I sold my house. Their plumber was in and out in about an hour. I expected it to be a much longer, and more expensive job! I will definitely hire them again.

Logan has helped me figure out the source of my kitchen ceiling leak and provided a sensible solution. I really appreciate how he is willing to repair and salvage existing material. His is very responsive and reliable. I trust the quality of his work. I have continued to hire him for several other projects like repairing my deck and extending my gutter system. I have been extremely satisfied.

I am giving Eric 5 stars for an exterior house painting job. My house was built in 1948 with lots of detail and issues that needed repair and attention. His bid was not the lowest, but he was the most knowledgeable. He has an excellent eye for the smallest detail and addressed them all, even some dry rot. He has good general knowledge of general contracting in addition to wonderful painting skills. He was on the job every day and his helpers were excellent. I am completely happy with Eric's job. The house looks great and everything was well cleaned up. Yup...5 stars!

Victor got in touch with me and was able to come out to temporarily solve our issue with water. He git here just before 1pm and just left before 10pm. Turns out it was a tee in the hot water feed to the kitchen ssink and dishwasher split. The pipe is some sort of PVC and splitting as he kept trying to repair. He finally had to put an exterior sleeve around by bad pipe and then his replacement into the other side of the sleeve. We figured the pressure “thump” of hot water turn on/off plus some syof bad PVC (maybe it was exposed to UV before installation 21+ years ago?). Victor did not give up until we had water again and his repair will last!! I will definitely hire this company again and ask specifically for Victor!! I’m also going to call the company Monday and tell them what a great guy they have!

Miguel Hernandez has done a tremendous amount of work for Lents Baptist Church. We still own the parsonage in the expectation that we would someday use it for church activities. The day has not come. In the interim we rent the house out. The house is a four bedroom two bath house. The last renter caused a lot of damage to the house. Miguel was right there to take on the responsibility and work of repairing the house. He washed all the walls, ceilings and floors. He repaired holes in the walls. Then he primed the walls and ceilings. Then he painted them. The floors in the main living areas are hardwood and he sanded, stained and sealed the floors. He laid tile in the bathrooms, kitchen and dining room. He replaced all the interior doors and the front door. New trim was installed between the walls and floor. We had water damage in the entry way to the church. Miguel repaired the walls and then painted the area. All his work was very good.

Gary took my oddball request for repair of a dress maker's mannequin. Looked at photos, gave me a quote, I delivered and he worked his magic on my mannequin. Returned it speedily in great order. In fact, it is more sturdy and functional than it has ever been. I'll keep Gary in mind and recommend him to friends for any repair issues. Thanks Gary!

We talked to three people for hardwood floor refinishing quotes (500 sqft), two from Thumbtack and one friend of a friend. The bids were all pretty similar; Martin's was a bit higher but we selected him because he was the only one of the three that seemed to care about the long term quality of the floors. He also did 5 layers of varnish vs 3 (the other two companies.) He (was the only one who) took moisture readings of the floor boards and the results determined a different direction for repair. Instead of replacing the damaged and stained pieces, he used wood filler and dark walnut stain... the most cost effective direction to go. The floors turned out great, smooth and even. We'd recommend him to others. He (and his worker) got in right away (working days and nights) completing the project in a week, which was great for us as we had time to get the floors done before moving into our new house. My words of advice: Communication isn't his strong suite and information doesn't always come across clearly in emails or texts. It may take a few times to get all the information; and because he understands his business very well, not everything he said made sense (at least for me). He speaks very fast, so ask questions if you want clarification. He runs full speed ahead on his own schedule, but he does care a lot about his work and wants to make sure it's done well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
