How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

How many singing lessons do I need?

It depends on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your singing lessons. Consult a highly rated vocal instructor to determine how many lessons you should take — and how often you should take them.

Do singing lessons actually work?

Yes, many students who’ve taken singing lessons say that their singing has gotten better. To find out if voice coaches near you have successfully taught others how to sing, read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

Where can you get singing lessons?

You can receive singing lessons from a vocal instructor or voice coach on Thumbtack. Some instructors offer virtual lessons, while others may require you to come into a studio for instruction.

I had been afraid to sing in public all my life. The only singing I had done before I met Virginia was in the shower. Virginia liberated my voice in the very first lesson. She created a safe space for me to explore my range and tonality. Virginia showed me how to feel my voice in my body and intentionally use it. I’ve learned to appreciate my voice as a true instrument. My range increased in just a few lessons. I have more confidence to belt out songs that I never thought I’d be able to sing. Virginia is easy to work with and will bring out the best in you!

Jesse's techniques and guidance have significanly pushed me toward meeting my personal goals as a vocalist. After only a few weeks of practicing what he teaches and attending weekly lessons, I am hitting notes I couldn't hit before, singing more comfortably, and starting to really like the sound of my voice! I'm excited to see how my voice will progress moving forward with his lessons. Would strongly recommend to anyone who is interested in learning how to sing at any level. -Jaron C.

Emily was amazing to work with! From the very first lesson, she was quickly able to find the unique qualities with my voice, think of creative techniques to improve my vocal abilities, and helped me work on solo pieces of my own that would fit my particular range. I've discussed with multiple Voice Instructors that I've found on Thumbtack and I found Emily to be a cut above the rest. I would highly recommend anyone to sign up through her!

Zsofia is a super nice person and supportive teacher who got me started in my first singing lessons. Unfortunately, after 18 months of singing the same one vowel sound the whole time and doing only warm-ups and scales every lesson with no homework or milestones, I had to find another teacher. I wish I could've stayed with her because I really like her as a person, but I lost confidence in her teaching methods and have found another teacher whose teaching method comes with a manual and she gives me homework every week so I have measurable goals. I know every student progresses at different rates, but every teacher I interviewed after 18 months with Zsofia was shocked at how little I had been taught. When I picked Zsofia, I didn't know what to look for in a voice teacher; now I know. Be sure to set clear expectations and goals, and make sure you don't get complacent. After all, you're paying to learn, not to be friends.
