We had Glenn come and install our hardwood floors for us. When he gave us a bid that seemed kind of low, I was a bit skeptical, but we decided to go with him anyways, because of his previous reviews. Glenn was awesome! He was able to get us in rather quickly, and he did a great job. I am super happy with the work that he did, I get comments all the time on how great our floors look. Glenn also has many other areas of expertise, so we will keep him in mind the next time we need something done around the house. I would definitely recommend him for other jobs!

I was able to make an appt within 2 days of my request for work. Zeev showed up on time and completed the work in a timely fashion, which included him taking a trip to the local Home Depot for materials. He repaired a leak/burst pipe above the garage ceiling and fixed my front yard faucet(handle broken off). The total cost for the repairs was more than reasonable, under $200. I would hire again.

It was a very great pleasure to work with Petru for my project. If you ever need a contractor for any type of work, especially hardwood floors, this is the guy you should hire. Very punctual, organized, no mess left behind, dust-free, honest and transparent in communication and giving us the details of the project before and during the process. He accomodated us and worked with our schedule. What more can you ask for from a contractor like him? I am giving him a 5 star review. I was never more satisfied and happy with the job and the look of our floors than ever before. I also have several other projects that I need a contractor for and I think you already know who I am hirring; that’s right, Petru with Elevate Hardwood Floor! You will never regret hirring him for your hardwood floor projects!

Soon after Lucien arrived to give us a quote I knew he was the one I wanted to do our remodel. He was very knowledgeable and very personable. He got back to us quickly and his quote was competitive. Lucien removed the carpet from our living room, dining room, master bedroom and closet, two guest rooms, hallway, and curved entry stairs. He replaced it with prefinished hardwood. He took his own time to find the exact wood we had used previously in our kitchen and family room. And now the transition between old wood and new wood is seamless. Lucien worked quickly, sometimes putting in 12 hour days to get our project completed before our guests arrived before the holidays. We would definitely have Lucien do any future work we might have and highly recommend Lucien to others needing hardwood floors.

Anatolie and the team from Oscar Tiles renovated our bathroom, including removing an old shower/tub and closet, and replacing with a beautiful stand-alone tiled shower and newly tiled floors. The quality of work was great, and he and his team were both flexible and responsive to the minor unexpected challenges that inevitably come up for these projects. He finished on time, kept the area tidy, and cleaned up well at the end. I would definitely hire them again!

We weren't sure what level of work the hardwood floors in our new house needed, but Viktor gave us a few options, and actually recommended one of the lower-cost options. We were clueless, and would have been willing to pay much more, luckily he was incredibly honest. We're very satisfied with the work that was completed; our floors look great! Also important to note - Viktor was very easy to communicate with via email, which was important to us as we have very busy schedules and can't always take the time to make a call.

Miguel Hernandez has done a tremendous amount of work for Lents Baptist Church. We still own the parsonage in the expectation that we would someday use it for church activities. The day has not come. In the interim we rent the house out. The house is a four bedroom two bath house. The last renter caused a lot of damage to the house. Miguel was right there to take on the responsibility and work of repairing the house. He washed all the walls, ceilings and floors. He repaired holes in the walls. Then he primed the walls and ceilings. Then he painted them. The floors in the main living areas are hardwood and he sanded, stained and sealed the floors. He laid tile in the bathrooms, kitchen and dining room. He replaced all the interior doors and the front door. New trim was installed between the walls and floor. We had water damage in the entry way to the church. Miguel repaired the walls and then painted the area. All his work was very good.

We wanted to redo all the flooring on the first level of our home. Victor gave us a bid and within three days the entire project was done. We needed a few minor things finished and his team came back the next day and everything was completed. He was willing to work with us to stay within our budget and was very professional and helpful in every way. His team did a great job. We were able to be in and out of the house for the 2 days they were working and are extremely happy with the finished product. If you're looking for a trustworthy, professional, helpful, efficient guy, Victor is the best! We will definitely be using him for any future projects. Cannot say enough good things about him and his team.

I just bought a house and it was in dire need of cleaning- particularly the kitchen. Olga came on time, assessed my request to clean both the inside and outside of the very dirty kitchen drawers and cabinets, and got right to work. This job included removing very old contact paper that lined the drawers and shelves. It was a challenging task, to say the least! Not only did Olga do the job, but she remained steady and on task until every last little piece of contact paper was removed and the kitchen was spotless and smelled fresh and clean. Olga even washed up floor on her way out the door. I am very grateful that I found Olga on Thumbtack. Thank you, Olga!

We highly recommend NW Madera flooring! We had a large hardwood floor refinishing project and they completed it on time, well within our budget and used top-of-the-line equipment and products. None of the other flooring company quotes came close to what they quoted for the project and they were able to complete it within a time frame that caused the least amount of inconvenience- even though it meant staying on the job until 9:30 PM! ( One less night in a hotel for us!) We will definitely use them for future projects and have already recommended this company to our friends.

Replaced linoleum flooring with ceramic tiles and installed floating sink and new one piece toilet. Installed subway tiles and updated all electrical outlets to finish kitchen remodel. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
