Phil Greek was an excellent wedding dj. I found him last minute and everything worked flawlessly. have never hired a dj before but using Thumbtack saved our wedding day. Phil has an amazing music library and was able to find all of our songs. He was very flexible with schedule and kept to his word and more than delivered.

As a vocalist in a worship band I wanted to improve my voice so I joined Sofia's lessons a year ago. My voice became definitely more stable after a couple of months and she helped me to discover my real register. Besides practicing scales she recommended me songs from different styles which I'd not thought before that I could ever sing. She gave me useful instructions how to perform. Because of her sensitivity she found the best personal examples for me. It was really a pleasure to take part in her lessons. We had lots of fun.

Great wedding band for ballroom dancing We hired Up Front for our wedding in early December 2014. Attentive, friendly, great repertoire, classy in dress and style, They have the talent to perform many different genres which is important for a wedding with guests aging 2-95. My wife and I like dancing, ballroom, Latin, blues and rock n roll; and they delivered. Not only was the music and talent outstanding but working with them through the whole seamless process was easy. We had seen them at 3 previous events and in all they were a hit and pleasant to listen and dance to. We highly recommend Up Front for any function! Everybody loved them.

With just a few days before I was supposed to sing for a wedding, I sought out an instructor through thumbtack to give me some feedback on how I sounded. Greta was the first to respond and her rate was very reasonable, so we set up an appointment. Unfortunately Greta suffered a fall on the day of our appointment, had to go to the hospital and subsequently cancel our appointment. With just a day before the wedding I had resigned myself to being as prepared as I could be on my own, and to just "get through it the best I could." Much to my surprise, Greta called me the evening before the wedding and offered to do a skype session free of charge in lieu of our previous appointment. The session was helpful and informative, but most of all, Greta's sweet and gentle encouragement helped me feel more confident then I would have otherwise. I was very thankful for her taking the time even though she was still recovering from her fall. She went above and beyond!

Chris is truly a champ! He was taking requests and making changes for my wife and I within the last few hours before our wedding. He was kind enough to go above and beyond what I could have expected from him and even provided us with some ceremony music for our outdoor wedding. If you want reliable, professional, and courteous DJ services, these folks are simply the best!!!!

Elisa was absolutely amazing!! From the first contact message to our goodbyes, she was amazing!! She was so professional and kept in excellent contact with us. Elisa was hired to play the violin at our wedding and we also asked for one of her students who played the viola and it sounded so beautifully :) I was crying walking down the aisle as it all sounded so elegantly. I highly HIGHLY recommend her for your event! Thank you so much Elisa!!!! Xoxo

My Daughter went from never playing an instrument to being proficient on her trumpet in 8 months. Her band teacher is so impressed. Much of her understanding of music comes from her voice and trumpet lessons with Ms. Valardi. She is branching out into piano this summer and has even attempted to write her own solo. A music teacher that understands the excitement of a student and balances that with foundation is a wonderful thing to find. Ms Valardi is just that.

We engaged Ryan for our daughter's wedding. He worked closely with us beforehand to select appropriate music for the pre-ceremony half hour and for the ceremony itself, including a lovely musical interlude of his own composition. Ryan is a first rate musician, and was reliable and very easy to work with. Our friends and family were very impressed.

Sarah did a one on one workshop with my daughter's band, Death By Thumb. She was able to connect with them immediately and help them sort out some issues they had as a band. Then they went right into song writing. Polished off one and started another all in a two hour period. One song called Mirror was performed just a few weeks later at the Analog Theater in late November. The band members have a lot respect for her and admire what she is doing with her own career. The kids want her to come back as soon as possible! Thank you Sarah, and we hope to see you soon!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
