It often feels like when you deal with a contracted 3rd party that knows more than you about some issue (home, auto) you are getting screwed. Glenn is one of the few people I've dealt with that always gives a fair price and has a conscience which is a godsend in a world where I know very little. In addition, he has been extremely responsive to my messages, done top quality work and even fixed a few small things around the house for free. I can't recommend Glenn enough; we will definitely be trying to contract him for every handyman job around our house.

Zeev was a very nice guy to work with. I had him install a light and dimmer switch in my living room and all turned out good. I'll most likely be bringing him back to the house for future projects.

I needed to replace a ceiling fan and install a new fan. Edward reached out to me and said he could come right next day evening. He was on time and gave an accurate quote during initial contact. Edward was very quick in his work and his workmanship is excellent. He removed the old fan and replaced the new one with a remote in roughly 1 hour. He also helped replace a regular light switch with a dimmer. His price is very very reasonable. I got a quote from other electricians and they were quoting 2-2.5 times for the same job. The main thing i liked about Edward is he quotes for the job as a whole rather than a hourly rate. So u know upfront how much it would cost to complete a job. I came to know that he does plumbing, electrical and remodeling work. I would definitely hire him again for my handyman needs in plumbing and electrical work. Another plus was Edward agreed to take my old ceiling fan and donate it to Habitat for Humanity so that it goes to a good cause. I appreciate his help.

Corey was the best! My closet project was completed with such great TLC. He’s so professional and went above and beyond to fix all my needs to perfection!! I’m so thankful that I cherry picked him from Thumbtack and I will always use him for my handyman needs in the future; as well as recommend him to all my friends and family. My closet was totally busted and he made it stronger than ever (extra L brace reinforcement) and removed my clunky closet doors and the runners on the bottom; it really looks so clean and truly A+ work. He had suggestions to make it even prettier and also wasn’t pushy at all about them, just intelligent and I’m already starting a wish list and will be hiring him again to upgrade. Thank you Corey for all you did!! Made my life easier and I appreciate your time and quality work!!

I had 2 sections of fence removed and replaced. Lloyd was very easy to work with and flexible especially since we had to coordinate with 2 of my neighbors. He crafted beautiful fences that blend right in with all the older fences around them. I will definitely call him back for any future fencing needs or other general handyman work.

Javier was on time and gave honest feedback to the condition of my 22 year old hot water heater. Rather than doing a complete service he replaced my dip tube to restore my hot water and bought me some time to research the new water heater I need. Thanks Javier ! My hot water is once again making me Really Hot Water!

Doug was great to work with. He had me an estimate and completed job in a very quick fashion. I gave him quite the challenge, he needed to fix and finish a project that a previous handyman screwed up and to do it on a shoestring budget. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable. We plan to keep him in mind for future projects.

Mike showed up exactly at the time I asked, allowing me a late start for my particular morning routine. We talked briefly to review the parameters of the trim job. He and coworker barely took a break...just to rehydrate. They wrapped it up at the time he had suggested they would AND, dragged the clippings to the spot I’d indicated (there was a lot) AND were careful to avoid my planting’s and small garden effort (which was somewhat vulnerable) AND polished-off the job by push-brooming my walkway and cement driveway of leaves for a tremendously clean finish...which I had no idea he would do. The debris he pulled out of the gutters, I thought would just be tossed on the ground below (didn’t matter to me)...but his assistant raked it all up and carted it away. He showed a LOT of pride in his work and desire to have / keep a happy new client. Will be using him again when time comes. Very nice work and knowledgeable about ivy, pests etc.

We negotiated a fair price. He showed up to look at the job... Gave me a start date, showed up on the start date as promised...completed the job much to my satisfaction, cleaned up the workplace when finished. Overall, very professional. Don't we wish all jobs went this well. ? I would recommend Dave Gordon for a reliable handyman.

John was great to work with. He assembled the furniture that we requested and even took on another project that we hadn't planned on. He's also great about offering other services and recommendations. He was kind enough to haul out a bunch of trash and recycling from the packing material for the furniture since our building can't handle that volume of disposal. We'd definitely hire him again as a handyman, and would consider reaching out to him for other skills as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
