Chelsea was great! She listened to what I wanted and executed it perfectly. She traveled an hour outside Portland to do my wedding make up and three other people in my bridal party. My makeup looked incredible and didn’t budge all day. I was even finding lashes still glued on the day after. She was very calm and focused, I highly recommend her.

Kerrin was so lovely to work with! From our initial communication to my wedding day, she was very easy to get in touch with and always made sure I was happy and satisfied. My bridesmaids and I had a great experience, and felt beautiful! Kerrin listened to what each person wanted their makeup to look like and easily made adjustments. After researching for wedding makeup artists, Kerrin was the best value hands down, without any sacrifice of quality or experience :)

Brittany was my makeup artist at my wedding. She did my makeup, my bridesmaid's makeup and even my mothers, who wanted nothing to do with professional makeup initially. I was so worried about not looking like myself on my wedding day because I don't wear tons of makeup normally. I was worried that I'd have too much makeup on or just have makeup that just didn't make me look like me! I wanted my husband to recognize me! Brittany understood my concern and she did such a fantastic job of simply enhancing my natural features with natural looking makeup! I even went with the fake eyelashes, which is a must! I was so impressed! She did everything I wanted and was also open to feedback! She even convinced my mother that she could do very light and natural looking makeup on her as well and after some coaxing from me and my sisters, we got her to do it. Everyone was so happy with the results that: 1) My hairdresser took her information down 2) My sister who got married a couple of months after me decided to go with Brittany as well, AND 3) My mother decided that for my sisters wedding she also HAD to have her makeup done otherwise she wasn't going to be any pictures. Brittany definitely changed her mind about the possibility of professional makeup. If I ever have a reason to get my makeup done professionally again, I will definitely use Brittany again.

LOVED Rene!! She did an amazing job on my hair and makeup!! My hair turned out great and did not take long to do (which is a big plus for me). She also did my bridal party's makeup, which was amazing too!! We all looked flawless :). She did great with matching our individual skin tones and listening to how each of us wanted to look. The lashes were fabulous!! Rene was professional and friendly during all my interactions with her. She was on time arriving and completing everything before pictures. She was fun to work with. I would definitely recommend her to others.

Jamie did makeup and hair for my wedding! She was lovely and kind, patient and friendly. I don't wear much makeup regularly, so I wanted a bright and natural look. She listened to all of my concerns and did a wonderful job. She also makes her own makeup line, which was very good on my skin. I fell asleep without washing my face and there were no breakouts! Even in the 95 degree heat and an outdoor wedding, her hair and makeup held up wonderfully :) If you want a great listener and professional artist, Jamie is the one.

When I was looking for hair and makeup for my wedding Onsite Portland stuck out to me because they were one of the only ones that were upfront about their pricing. They had a pricing sheet which was really helpful to follow. I also chose them because they did both hair and makeup rather than having to hire two more separate vendors. When I contacted them Adriane got back to me right away. She was very responsive to all my questions. I really appreciated that she would always respond to all my emails even just to say that she got it. She always answered my phone calls or got back to me right away. She was very organized which made me feel better during my Wedding planning process. My makeup artist Leanora came up with great ideas during the trial and knew what would look good. On the day of the wedding we had Rubi and Nia and they were both right on time and did a great job. My bridesmaids and mom looked great. My hair and makeup was exactly what I had in mind from the trial. The company is upfront about their expectations from their clients in the contract. So I would recommend reviewing the contract to make sure you understand the expectations so that everything goes smoothly.

Sarah was absolutely amazing! She was my makeup artist for my wedding, and I could not have been happier. She was so easy to work with, and even made the long drive out to my house for both a trial run as well as for doing makeup on the big day. She scheduled her whole day around me and my bridal party (who she also did makeup for, as well as for my mother), and was so timely and had us all out the door and looking gorgeous right on time. She was so easy to communicate with about all the details, and definitely knows what she is doing! I would recommend her to anyone, especially brides. She is definitely highly talented, and I am so glad I picked her! I definitely plan on going to her for many of my beauty needs in the future.

When I began planning my April 2010 wedding, the last thing on my mind was makeup. But after family and friends urging me to find someone to "help me relax and feel pretty," I began my search. I am not a woman who wears makeup so I had NO idea where to look. After calling my local salons, and recovering from the shock of their fees, I searched on Craigslist... good ol' Craigslist. I found 3 Willamette Valley makeup artists. Only Christina responded back to me. She actually responded within a couple of hours of me emailing her with questions! Talking with her on the phone, I felt very comfortable. We talked about shades and complexion, theme of my wedding, wedding colors, and the venue. She even came to my house (2 hours away) for a run through!!! Talk about above and beyond! My makeup on the run through was gorgeous! After that, I was even more excited for my big day! The day of the wedding, Christina met with all my ladies at a friend's house just down the street from the hair salon. In 4 1/2 hours, she did my flawless bridal makeup, and the makeup of my 4 attendants! My husband hates makeup, but he loved mine! He said it was very natural looking and accented my features that he loves so much. Christina, you are awesome and I can not thank you enough for making me look beautiful on my wedding day! I will recommend you everyone who is looking for a makeup artist! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ~T. Clark

Liz was our makeup artist on site for a live broadcast out of PAX West 2016 in Seattle. She was responsible for 7 on-stage and on-camera hosts over the course of 4 days, keeping them broadcast ready at all times. She was 100% professional, worked under an EXTREMELY abbreviated schedule, and managed to have everyone looking absolutely resplendent in much less time than we would have thought possible. We asked a LOT of LIz, and she totally delivered. She also did research prior to the event as to the look we were hoping for, and proactively confirmed that with us, resulting in a flawless execution of makeup for this broadcast. The hosts made a point to mention how much they loved her work, and we got many compliments as to their appearance. Her clean, beautiful style and airbrush techniques lend themselves well to this kind of show. We hope for the chance to work with Liz again soon and would recommend her unequivocally.

Myranda did my bridal make-up and she did an amazing job! She had me send her pictures of make-up looks I liked on Pinterest so she could get an idea of what I liked. She brought tons of great MAC make-up with her and arrived early to get me ready. I got so many compliments on my make-up from the wedding guests and it photographed really well. Myranda is a consummate professional with years of experience in makeup artistry.

Shawna is the artist who did my bridal hair and makeup for my wedding. Shawna was a consummate professional from the start of the process through my last touch up and I would give her 10 stars if I could. She is highly skilled and crafted the perfect hair and makeup combination for the wedding. In fact, it felt like she knew what I wanted/needed better than I did! The hair and makeup presented beautifully in the pictures and I would not have changed a thing. Shawna was patient, kind, and helped keep the morning before my wedding very calm. It was like having a friend with amazing skills do my hair and makeup! If you are looking for someone to make you look like the best version of yourself on your wedding day, you should book Shawna or a member of the Lux team!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
