Introduction: Whether a student is 5 years old or 80, I believe everyone can benefit greatly from learning the fundamentals of music, coupled with even the most elementary music theory concepts. If you are a new student, the first thing you may want to ask yourself is whether you have a specific goal. Do you want to learn rock, jazz, classical, or blues, or all of them? We can do that! Do you want to learn to read music? Or, is tablature notation enough for your needs? We can do either or both. Are you interested in writing your own music and learning how different styles of music are constructed using music theory? We can do that too. It all depends on where you want to go as a musician. For more advanced students, we may work on anything from altered chords and jazz solos to advanced rock techniques (sweep arpeggios, exotic scales, etc.) and odd time signatures or advanced theory. For beginning students, I like to concentrate on technique during the first few lessons in order to develop good habits. This includes posture (how to properly sit and hold guitar), left-hand technique (how to best place fingers for chording as well as single notes), and right-hand technique (how to hold the pick and perform picking patterns). The student's technique will be honed through various picking exercises as well as basic chord progressions, scales, and songs. Of course, during this time, we will work together to find the best path to meet your music goals!
