I needed someone experienced with light switches and wiring to help me figure out how to connect a porch light switch. The wires were in the wall, but I wasn't sure which ones they were. Someone had instead installed a pair of switches for a fan/overhead light. He figured it out, which was great. He even went to the hardware store and picked up a switch. However, it didn't match the color of the other switch next to it, and he didn't seem willing to go again and get one to match. Communication seemed to be the issue, not his knowledge. So, four stars for doing the most important part of the job I needed, but one star off because, for the amount I paid, I'd really have liked it if he'd realized they should match, gotten two switches of the same color, and hooked them up. I had to make two trips to the hardware store to get the right switches, a time consuming process.
I asked Chris Wilhelm of Compass Home Repair and Renovation to install a utility sink in my basement. I had recently done a renovation restoring a bedroom, bathroom suite along with adding a washer and dryer for a a tenant. I didn't think about a utility sink, as part of that renovation which is a useful thing to have for larger and dirty clean-up projects. I only had a sink. There was no drain, no spigot or faucets. He dropped by my home to get an idea of the job's specifics and returned a week later. Chris installed the sink with a few hiccups along the way (such as trying to figure out how to turn off the water--not his fault--the recent plumbing was unlike anything he'd ever encountered. The sink works beautifully, and he integrated it next to the washer/dryer without taking up any additional space in this storage area. Best of all is the hose attachment, which insures that hard-to-reach spaces can be reached without effort. I've already hired Chris to do some restoration of my porch steps, which is due to be done this Saturday.
Took out our old front porch and built a new one (new design). Brant's craftsmanship is fantastic! He was easy to work with, offered great ideas and added in little details like wrapping the bottoms of the posts to make it all look very finished. John is responsive to phone calls and text messages. Honest and fair pricing!
thanks Jon Front porch looks a lot better now
Logan updated porch posts and railings at my home. He was very pleasant to work with and a good communicator. I'm very happy with the results of his carpentry work.
Eddie helped me deal with a spot on my patio that has been flooding in the rain. His solution was economical, preserved my walking path, and it looks nice. He showed up when he said he would, he did the work in the time frame he said it would take and he gave me recommendations for other things I can do in my yard. I'll be calling him again.
Would hire again in a heartbeat. Such hard workers and good price. What a find! He did some pretty extensive concrete work for our walkways and patio and it all turned out perfectly. Julian fit us into his schedule very quickly and we're completely satisfied with the end result.
Jim and his team are very pleasant to work with! They have worked on multiple Homes of ours and never disappointed. They have remodeled one of our homes inside and out from ground up! Siding, Windows, Painted inside and out. tiling and kitchen cabinets installed, fireplace makeover, and more!
I am so pleased with the work done on my home by David Rybak and Company! A former rental of 10 years, our one level house had a complete remodel (new kitchen, wood floors, bathrooms, new trim, painting, back porch) by David Ryback and company and I just love it!! David is a great listener, and, therefore, he right there with you on what you want and need. He also offered great suggestions to have the place look even better based on his skills. He never attempted to get me over budget. I would highly recommend Rybak and Company. Maureen McCormick
We met with several people about staining our fence, and were very impressed with Duane. He was one of the few people who came out prepared with a measuring wheel to measure the fence himself, he had his license number on the quote, and he seemed to really know what he was talking about. We were so impressed with Duane that we asked him to come out and stain our front porch as well. He seems to have knowledge well beyond painting, so I intend to keep his information on hand. I feel confident that when he agrees to take on a project he won't settle for anything less than doing a phenomenal job.
ABC built a very large covered porch for us. Travis suggested stamping and coloring the concrete and we couldn't be happier! We now enjoy a patio that looks like a marbled color of slate. It's gorgeous and we thank ABC for a great job and competitive price.
If we owned a business and wanted someone to represent us, we would hire Jonathan Betea. In addition to being a wonderful, painter, he is a kind, friendly, personable, and thoughtful person. Jonathan always showed up on time, and kept us in the loop for every step taken. He is a careful painter, making sure there were no mistakes. He cleaned up perfectly. Jonathan is a great listener and gave excellent suggestions as well. His main purpose was to please us. His price was fair and he completed the job ahead of time. If you are looking for a painter, we can't recommend Jonathan Betea high enough. He is the absolute best!!!
Geoff was great. Estimates were accurate and honest. The work was finished in a timely manner. Easy to communicate with when there were options to consider about my porch. Very knowledgeable and when we found surprises (wood rot!!), provided several alternatives for a range of prices. Flexible and accommodated my reuse/repurpose ethic. I will work with Geoff and his team again for sure and on bigger projects as well.
Trimmed out windows, patio door and repaired old trim Done in a timely manner looks great as well as clean up
I hired Trish from PDS Design Concepts to help me with remodeling and completely updating my newly purchased 1953 mid-century modern ranch house in Portland. At least five designers (several of them from Thumbtack.com) walked through the house prior to giving me proposals. All of them were really outstanding. Trish stood out with her incredible eye and attention to details. From the initial walkthrough she was seeing things that I had completely missed - and that's one top reason for hiring a designer. I want my house to be well designed - but I'm not a trained designer, so why on earth would I attempt this without help... Trish has many certifications, including being a certified kitchen and bath designer. Plus she has been working in many or all aspects of this field for around 25 years. She helped me pick out the proper mid-century modern Eichler inspired exterior colors. She coordinated and met with the painting crew (ClearView Painting-outstanding) to go over it all. And she directed me on selecting the interior colors. She sends me complete packages of interior design ideas to help her get a feel for what I like and don't like. Then she responds and adapts accordingly. She's not afraid, in fact, I think she is great at discovering my particular design boundaries and seeing how far she should or should not go. Her project management has been fantastic - work has taken me away much more than planned but she is always ready to meet with contractors on site during the remodel. In addition we have gone on efficient trips to marble, granite, lighting and other interior stores to make selections and review options. She is "close-by" anywhere in the Portland area. She is very sensitive to pricing and has no problem continue to bid out work or seek other contractors or suppliers if prices do not make sense and are not fair and reasonable. In short, even though my remodel is still underway - working with Trish is just a real pleasure. If you are very much interested in quality living, in a well designed environment - then I give Trish and PDS Design Concepts my highest recommendation for interior design.
I first used DeMarco Builders in 2004. Joe DeMarco and his crew were remodeling the house next door to mine and were going to flip the house. I was so impressed with their attention to detail and the finished house. At the time I was looking for a contractor to add a master bedroom and bathroom and to do some other repairs to my home. After seeing Joe's work I hired him to do the work for me. In total, I added 450 sq ft, revamped my old bathroom, and reconfigured the existing 2 bedrooms, and added a small deck. I was and am thrilled with the finished product. Joe and crew worked quickly and gave me the house I wanted. Fast forward to February 2016, I needed my house painted, a window moved, the deck enlarged, and most importantly, my non functional kitchen gutted and rebuilt. I knew that Joe had returned to the Portland area and I was disappointed that he wasn't available to do the work. I contacted him for for some recommendations and he just said, "What do you need done? I will be back in the Long Beach (CA) area for some other business and I would be glad to get the work done for you." I was thrilled! He started on May 2, 2016 and on June 2 everything was done. My old kitchen was small, had only 2 cabinets and little to no counter space. It is still small, 12'x7' wall to wall but the difference in functionality is huge. I really didn't know how to make it work but Joe did! I always say I went from a one butt kitchen to a two butt kitchen with no additional space. Joe really wants to make his clients happy and to give them a finished product that exceeds expectations. He has done that twice for me and I cannot recommend him enough.
Will did nice job removing old pergola and creating new grape arbor. I recommend him and would hire him again. We appreciated the timely communication (from initial bid, to pre-start of work, to design tweaks needed to complete project) and quick work on beautiful new arbor.
Dave did a great job painting my two story house. He fixed and patched all the window trims and sidings before he painted. Dave is very knowledgeable and very professional. I will use him again for future projects. Highly recommended.
I couldn't be happier with the work Mitchell Contracting did for me- new wood floors throughout, drop ceiling, paint, addition of an electric fireplace, new fence, and a total kitchen remodel. Excellent attention to detail, everything turned out even better than I expected- my neighbor said the new kitchen looks like it should be in a design magazine. Best experience I've ever had with a contactor, very professional and easy to deal with- would recommend them to anyone.
Had a deck project that required removing and replacing all the decking material. Once into the project, it was clear that some of the support wood needed replacing too. We're so glad the project manager looked at the big picture, not just the top layer of wood and work. Great job, on budget, with additional information, on time. Despite rain. Thanks for the work!
This will be a relatively long review. The reason is because I own and operate a business in the contracting field (custom cabinetry) so I am able to review this company from the perspective of a client, but also from someone who knows the industry well and the anxiety that people feel when looking to hire contractors for projects. I understand that many people have a difficult time evaluating overall VALUE when making major home purchases. We all know that the cheapest option isn't always the best one, but how do you determine where your money is best spent? So I'm laying out this review from that perspective. For those who don't want to read on...I would highly recommend Roraima and we will be using them again for additional home projects. PROJECT: We wanted to remove a window and door from a wall in our dining kitchen area. The window looked directly into a neighbors fence and the door is never used. We plan to put a custom bar/cabinetry and artwork on the newly closed wall. We have plenty of natural light from other doors, windows and skylights. Will likely post final pictures once cabinetry is done:) QUOTE PROCESS: I love Thumbtack and there aren't many remodel companies using them in Portland. I hope that grows, it's a great process. Anyway, Roraima responded to my request within 1 business day and we had a time set up for Jose and Tony to come out within 2 days to evaluate the overall project more thoroughly. Jose and Tony showed up on-time and were very respectful of our space and time. They were personable, but efficient. A quote was given via email within 1 business day and it was clear what was included in the quote and what was not included. When they were at our home, Tony made sure to be clear about what areas they knew might be tricky (matching our ceiling texture) and how cost might be added (once the wall was opened up, unexpected things can pop up). Since I'm in the industry, I'm well aware of how you don't know "what's behind the wall" until it's opened, so I did expect that complications can arise once that occurs. We asked where there was some opportunity to reduce overall costs once we received the quote and through that discussion, decided to remove the existing cabinet ourselves (which was easy). WORK PROCESS: Again, Tony and Jose showed up on-time the first day and got straight to work FIRST with blocking off the work area from the rest of our open living room. The tools and care they use to reduce dust to the rest of the home is awesome! I'm in a lot of home remodels and I've never seen the specific tools they use (the posts they use to keep the plastic tight to create their own "room" and the zipper they put in to create a door for closing off fully). Plus, at the end of the day, they left their own work area super clean (photo shown). I appreciate people who work like that. They said "it's like a chefs kitchen". The work took longer than they expected, but they clearly communicated why and what they were doing as they went along. We were heading out of town so it didn't matter to us if it took a couple extra days, which we communicated ahead of time. There were a couple additional costs that came up, but they were communicated ahead of time to be approved by us. We increased the amount of new insulation to be used, as the old insulation wasn't adequate or quality in some parts and we shifted a couple other things based on the new cabinet design. ABOVE and BEYOND: As mentioned, we went out of town while they were working. On the first day we left, the dog sitter ended up getting tied up and coming later than expected. She didn't let us know that. At the end of the work day, Tony texted me to let us know they were done for the day but that our dog hadn't been outside since we left. He asked if we'd like him to let her out. That meant them staying longer after a very long work day, but he offered because they like our dog and are genuinely caring human beings. It was such a great thing to know that we had two strangers (essentially) in our home and that not only did we need to not worry about our space, they were also looking out for our precious four legged family member! He even sent a video of her relieving herself so that we knew she was doing well. FINAL RESULTS: Great experience and value overall for sure! We had a cheaper quote, but the contractor was slow to get back to us and answer any questions. He was personable, but he didn't take the time to explain where issues could arise and how they would be handled. Those are HUGE value points for me, knowing how so many small remodelers can often be terrible with communication. That was not the case here at all. I also get the feeling that this is a crew that if they can't do something well, they'll tell you that. I don't see them saying yes to a project they can't tackle and do well, which to me is also a sign of a good company. Highly recommended.
