Ramona G. says, "IF Thumbtack had allowed me to punch all 5 of these items I would have (qual, value, prof, punctuality & responsiveness). I have an older, small house that needed various things done in the bathroom for this job. He listened well and did the work & I am very happy. I wanted to add pictures but I for some reason can't on this app. Replaced the ceiling fan and light, miscellaneous hardware in the bathroom and put up the new cabinet/mirror. Painted the old dark wood on the cabinet and it took several coats of good paint in an offwhite. Painted my bedroom and bathroom and the doors in the hallway and in those rooms same color really brightening up this house. It looks new! O and I had a useless ugly door between my bathroom and bedroom which they took out and filled in the wall, spackling to match the old etc. I'd highly recommend these two guys, the Bilyeu brothers. VERY pleasant and have great senses of humor and also I know they'd a made a lot more money on a bigger fancier job but I am not able to do a lot more or I'd have them back. :)."See more

Linda K. says, "Completed a basement renovation for a 1926 bungalow which included framing, installing drywall, applying wall texture and painting, and positioning shelving. Repositioned washer/dryer and installed sink. Also rerouted some wiring in the ceiling before installing drywall. Workers were great with communication - provided insight on installing shelves so they would be sturdy, covering up wall that housed pipe workings for tankless water heater, and ensuring the width of the stairs would be wide enough to accommodate moving washer/dryer (removal of existing wood panels was necessary before installing drywall). Vast improvement for this portion of the basement. Finished according to timeline provided in contract with no downtime."See more

Mike J. says, "I originally met Andrew through a Craigslist ad 5 years ago - He’s one of the very few vendors that I trust completely and rely on heavily for complicated remodeling projects. Andrew is very good at every level of home repair (big and small) - he can build a load bearing wall, install siding, tile a tub wall, repair a deck, dig into a rotted board and make it like new or…. take on the delicate light fixture installation or precision trim installation. He is one of the very rare people who can effectively take on almost any task and complete it professionally and for a very good value. The attached photo shows my most recent project- Andrew installed new Milgard windows, custom deck facia, cedar siding accents, extensive rot repairs and the list goes on. It went from the ugliest house on the street to one of the nicest - Thanks Andy. He has worked on 4 major home renovation projects with me. I enjoy buying beaten up, ugly , smelly properties and transforming them into very nice homes. Without Andrews help - I wouldn’t be able to do what I do successfully. He’s a great sounding board - if you want to work through your options (budget vs. expensive) or figure out the smartest way to approach a problem - Andrew can help you understand the pros, cons and pitfalls way before you dive into a big project. I trust him completely in my home - he’s a positive guy that really wants to help. He’s worked around my teenage kids and my wife - they enjoy talking with him and have only had only positive experiences with him. Last but not least - Andrew is very well educated, has an incredible vocabulary and can effectively discuss anything from power tools to music, cooking or complex current events. Andrew is my go to guy when I need to get things done, he’s become a very good friend and a trusted partner on all things construction related. If you need help with your home - I highly recommend Andrew."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
