About
Hello! I'm Ashlee and I spend a good portion of my days helping people find the excitement, interest, passion, fun, and life force in music. I believe that music has the power to bring people together to recognize our shared humanity, if we let it. I teach lessons to anyone, anywhere via FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype, and I also teach in my home studio to locals, as well as at Portland Community College. It is my goal to inspire and challenge every individual student. Lessons are tailored to the individual's pace of learning, goals and stylistic preferences. I take pride in my unique ability to effectively communicate the concepts of music to every student. I love that every lesson and every student are different, it provides a fun and challenging experience for the teacher and student, alike. I enjoy connecting with my students through the wonderful and unique medium that is music. It is so rewarding to see the inspiration and fulfillment that comes with learning new concepts and skills.

I took lessons from Ashlee a few years back and she is a phenomenal teacher. She is patient and very helpful. I loved that as an adult, she made me feel comfortable taking lessons. I highly recommend her if you are in need of a piano instructor.

I was a student of Ashlee's for two years and I highly recommend her. I came to her as an adult student (mid 20's) with some background with other instruments, but no prior piano lessons. I was able to make great progress working with her. Her tips on practice techniques were very helpful, and our routine had a good mix of fundamentals (scales, arpeggios, chords, etc.) and playing pieces of music. The lessons were great and I was motivated to practice in between lessons because I wanted to show her I was getting better. To me that is the sign of a good teacher. Also she encouraged her students to play in recitals (with the other students and friends, family, etc. watching) which were fun and a great motivator. I worked really hard on memorizing pieces for these recitals, and it was a great sense of accomplishment to play in front of an audience and fun to watch the other students play as well. After I was decent enough to play easier stuff she was very flexible as far as letting me choose music that I liked to play. And she also recommended pieces that she thought I would like. I think this is really important because playing is more fun when you like the music and that of course makes you want to practice more. (She introduced me to Claude Debussy and now he is one of my favorites.) My lessons were always a bright spot in the week to look forward to and I am very glad that I got to experience lessons with Ashlee. She is a great teacher, pianist, and also just a generally easy person to be around. The only reason I stopped the lessons is I had to move out of town. p.s. I am obviously am coming from the perspective of an adult student but if you're looking for lessons for your child Ashlee is great with kids. They all seemed to be having a good time at the recitals and sounded good as well.

I can't recommend Ashlee enough to those looking to get a quality musical education. Having spent much of my childhood learning piano, I returned to it as an adult and was very fortunate to find Ashlee Young. She has a natural gift for teaching, can relate to her students as individuals, and knows how to bring out the best in her students no matter what they want to achieve. In just a few months of working with Ashlee, I was able to perform at a level I could never have imagined, and have taken her methods with me even though I no longer have the pleasure of working with her weekly. Don't miss out on the opportunity to learn from this wonderful instructor!
