Glenn installed a bamboo wood floor in our 1950's home. The floor is beautiful. Glenn is very knowledgeable about home repairs and was inventive when we had to adjust for some older home issues. I would definitely use Glenn again for home repair issues.

My cushions no longer sag and the couch is clean! Now I have an upholstery guy! He was able to help with an all-wood chair, too. Color me happy!

Really couldn't have had a better experience. He hung a fan in our bedroom quickly, showed up on time, did a great job and the price was very reasonable. I will be recommending him in the future and using his services again myself for future painting projects. Thanks Chris!

John and his crew worked on a new rental home my husband and I bought back in November. He put up a new fence, built an amazing entertainers dream deck, gutted both the master bathroom and the terribly dated kitchen. The finished product left me speechless. From the counters to the cabinets to the fixtures and all the way to the wood choice on the deck it was a smooth, carefree process. I was so amazed with his professionalism and communication through the whole construction that I called him back to put in tile and flooring. The house is so beautiful that we almost disn't want to rent it but move in ourselves. This was our first rental house flip; we are in the process of looking for another home to fix up and when we do, we definitely plan on calling John and the guys at A&C to get the job done. I highly recommend to all my friends and family without any hesitation. Job well done!!

Daniel did all the work for a competitive price. Responded to texts/calls promptly. He had everything he needed for the job, was careful in the house where I just had the new wood floor. He also made the recommendation on another door to me to match the both side color in the kitchen. He didn't charge you with tiny things, attention to details. I would definitely recommend. Daniel is a fantastic professional. I'd hire him again to do another project such as the tile backsplash.

I hired Vadim Karp and Kibuk Construction to re-do my grandparents' floor. I was nervous to hire someone from afar but the team went above and beyond. They answered all my questions, went out to the site immediately, and helped my grandparents choose the floor they wanted. Within a week, my grandparents have a gorgeous new floor. The team accommodated our needs, helping grandparents move furniture, wood stove, sink, etc. Grandparents told us that the team is "as nice as can be" and that "our new floor looks fantastic." They have needed a new floor for 20 years and this team made it happen. The team laid the floor in one day and grandparents already have a usable kitchen. Thank you so much!

My wife wanted a natural look to out slightly beat up 106 year old fir floors. After meeting a few floor refinish era that had less than adequate knowledge of finishes and wood, Petru showed up to bid and what a relief it was to meet someone who knew what he was talking about. We settled on a Swedish finish for our floors and he finished in two days. The floors are everything I had hoped for and more. The follow up was also great. I'll be recommending Elevate floors to anyone who asks.

Logan gave me a thorough estimate and walk through on the work I wanted done-- wood casing added to exterior windows. He was generous with his time, very knowledgeable, and trustworthy. His estimate was "worst case," so he came in under budget. I would absolutely recommend working with Logan!

Did an excellent job. They color-matched all my oak cabinets to match what was already in the kitchen. They worked with me in painting molding I had hung myself and in painting a set of cabinets that was veneer instead of real wood, and was difficult to get paint to adhere to. This makes up for them taking longer to start the job than first expected. Would hire again!

We couldn't be happier with the work that Viktor and his crew did for us. Our floors were hidden under very old, gross shag carpet from the 1970s. Many cats and who knows what later, we just weren't sure if the floors would be salvageable. Viktor diagnosed the floor and identified spots that would need renovation, quoted a incredibly reasonable price, and set to work. The crew worked on a very tight turnaround and did a beautiful job. Viktor called with periodic updates on their progress. They also treated the patch jobs with a coat of 'aging' chemicals to help the wood darken quickly so that it would better match the original. When the project was complete, the crew left our house in move-in ready condition and cleaned up well. AND, the price that Viktor quoted was the price I paid. This was our first major project on our new house, and we are so happy with how it turned out. I can't recommend Viktor highly enough. Thank you, Viktor! - Allison and Eric

We talked to three people for hardwood floor refinishing quotes (500 sqft), two from Thumbtack and one friend of a friend. The bids were all pretty similar; Martin's was a bit higher but we selected him because he was the only one of the three that seemed to care about the long term quality of the floors. He also did 5 layers of varnish vs 3 (the other two companies.) He (was the only one who) took moisture readings of the floor boards and the results determined a different direction for repair. Instead of replacing the damaged and stained pieces, he used wood filler and dark walnut stain... the most cost effective direction to go. The floors turned out great, smooth and even. We'd recommend him to others. He (and his worker) got in right away (working days and nights) completing the project in a week, which was great for us as we had time to get the floors done before moving into our new house. My words of advice: Communication isn't his strong suite and information doesn't always come across clearly in emails or texts. It may take a few times to get all the information; and because he understands his business very well, not everything he said made sense (at least for me). He speaks very fast, so ask questions if you want clarification. He runs full speed ahead on his own schedule, but he does care a lot about his work and wants to make sure it's done well.

I needed a new sliding glass door which was complicated by the fact there was wood rot around the door. After picking out a door at Lowes they said the couldnt do it re the wood rot. Max found a comparable door with a competitive price. After removing the current door he was able to repair the wood rot and install the new door which I'm thrilled with.

Geoff was great. Estimates were accurate and honest. The work was finished in a timely manner. Easy to communicate with when there were options to consider about my porch. Very knowledgeable and when we found surprises (wood rot!!), provided several alternatives for a range of prices. Flexible and accommodated my reuse/repurpose ethic. I will work with Geoff and his team again for sure and on bigger projects as well.

I met Josh and some of his crew the summer of 2012 when I did some research on one of the "Lists" looking for a company to rebuild my rapidly deteriorating deck. I had personal contact with 3 contractors and right away both my wife and I liked Josh's attitude, his experience and his ability to dedicate a few people to get started on our new deck. They did a fantastic job in record time and we were more than happy with the entire project. Our family and friends wanted the name of the company that did the job and of course we gave them Josh's name and phone number. Josh made our deck out of Ipe wood from Brazil (spelled Ipe and pronounced “ee-pay”), and this hardwood will outlast the entire house because its density and hardness. We have had Josh come back 2 times over the years to refinish the deck and it appears as if it was brand new every time he puts the finish on it. Based on his expertise, his willingness to make his crew available anytime we need them and just the over all experience with NW Outdoor Living has made Josh one of our "go-to guys" when we need woodwork or reconstruction work done. I strongly recommend him and his company for any construction work. P.S. I could take some photos and email them to anyone who might be interested.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
