I would highly recommend GR Contracting for Land Surveyor. He was responsive and in a timely manner. We were due to close on our home, and were notified there was no elevation certificate. He assured me it would be completed quickly. GR Contracting delivered!!! Thank you!!!

Kevin is knowledgeable in all aspects of home improvement projects having experience with renovating his own home completely. Kevin is thorough and committed to excellence going above and beyond to ensure the customer's needs are met. We had a 55" TV mounted above our fireplace with associated power and HDMI wiring installed in a professional manner. The area was left orderly and clean as originally found at the start. Kevin has a keen attention to detail and works intelligently through all challenges encountered. We were very satisfied with the outcome and highly recommend Kevin for your future needs.

Daniel and Justin came to move our kitchen cabinets up about 4-5 inches, to the standard height. We couldn't be more pleased with the perfect job well done. Even though my home isn't a "drop cloth" kind of home, they covered everything from the front door to their work area, and all my appliances were covered. Amazing job well done!! I have some rental properties and I will definitely be hiring Daniel again. I felt as if he treated our home, and did the work as if it was his own. That's really hard to find these days! Wish I could give more than 5 stars!! You won't be sorry hiring Daniel!!

Brick and cement step repair. Carlos quoted a price that was the most reasonable for materials and labor. He obtained all the necessary materials and began the work as soon as I accepted his quote. He removed all the old broken cement and replaced it with new. He was very thorough and removed all the debris from the project. He took many photos of the work in progress as I was out of town. He gave the cement time to dry and cure. He then returned to check that all went correctly with the job. I would be quick to hire Mura Construction again for my home repair needs.

Brett has been incredible to work with - from the first meeting he was very professional and responsive. He met with us and was able to design a home that we loved. We added a very large addition onto a 200+ year old farmhouse and his design was perfect! We are currently in the building process and watching our dream home come to life has been incredible. We can not thank him enough!

We are very pleased with the work done by them on our patio roof. Even with some additional work we requested that they do, changing out a window to a sliding glass door , it was done professionally and on time. Tom and his crew were very respectful and hard working and cleaned up every day. We will request this company to do some other work for us in the future. I would recommend them to others needing work done on their home.

CR3 is a diamond in the rough for home improvement. I had them install drywall for a large hole in my living room, as well as replacing base molding all around the first floor and when they found a leak behind the wall, they made me aware of it instead of just closing up and going home. I was able to bring a plumber in and save myself what would have been hundreds down the road. These young men really impressed me with their dedication to my satisfaction, not just chasing a paycheck.

I was very happy with the job they did renovating my rental unit. In fact, it turned out so nice that the first person who saw it loved it, and immediately rented it. The owner of the company is very knowledgeable and professional.

Familye Roofing and General Contracting was great to work with. We hired them to extend our master bedroom and add a fourth bedroom. The work they did was great and they were very easy to work with. They are flexible and were willing to work with us throughout. Ralph is very laid back and was great to have around His knowledge and experience was great as he dealt with unexpected issues that popped up. I would recommend them to everybody I know.

I purchased a home which needed a total remodel. I contracted DNR to take on the work and they did an amazing job. I wanted to change the layout of the kitchen to add sliding glass doors and they gave me exactly what I pictured- I get so many compliments on my kitchen. I also wanted to change the half bathroom into a full bath, which I thought would be impossible. After knocking down some walls and breaking through the floor, they were able to get the plumbing into place to expand the bathroom add a glass shower stall. I couldn't be happier with the outcome and I always refer them to anyone I know that needs work done.

I usually do not leave on line reviews, but decided to do so, this time around. I decided to use Thumbtack to find a pro who will do a new floor plan and architectural drawing for a total home rehab project. I chose to work with Erik out of the three names that Thumbtack provided. I am so glad I did!! My experience has been very positive. Erik is a true professional that knows his stuff. I am extremely pleased with my new floor layout . At every step of the way he patiently worked with me to make my dreams a reality. I will not hesitate to recommend his services to friends and family. Thank you Erik for making it a very pleasant experience!!

What started as a simple roofing job turned into a real project; our back roof needed to be practically rebuilt, so there was an up-charge, but not an unreasonable one. Our house was built in the 1920's or 1930's, (I do not think there were many building codes at that time) so he had to contend with surprises from whatever was done back then. George will talk the problems out with you and arrive at a mutually agreed upon resolution - this is a very good thing with this house. So the 2 day job turned into a month-long affair, with delays due to weather, supplies and other issues. But the end result is so nice and all areas of the contract were fulfilled as requested. I recommend Alamo Home Improvement. I know we will use him again should a need arise (but he needs a new truck.)

Tanika has done an outstanding job. We were trying to sell our house for the longest and finally we decided to look for a designer or home stager to at least help us put together the house and she showed us so many things that can help catch a buyer's eye. Tanika even design several rooms for us in our new home and we can't wait for our install date. Overall she is really calm and understanding and she takes her time with you through deep decision making.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
