There was a minor leak in the roof which I suspected was from a skylight. Maxwell not only quickly responded with a quote but also in doing the repair. He replaced the skylight and it was obvious that he did that type of work many times. Frank and Robin were very friendly and accommodating. Time will tell if the leak is repaired, but I would again hire and recommend Maxwell Remodeling

I could not be happier with how smoothly and efficiently my roof replacement went with Titan Roofing. Jake was friendly and easy to get in touch with. He replied to my posting almost immediately and had a written quote returned in a day. His crew was incredibly efficient and completed the entire job in about 6 hours. All in all, dealing with Titan was a pleasure and I would strongly recommend them for those seeking a new roof in the Pittsburgh area.

Highly recommend this company! We had a previous window company that never finished the capping of a window. We called a few other companies to help us finish off the capping but no other company would take us on without selling us a whole new window. When we called Vynex we spoke to Anna who helped us without trying to sell us anything more than we needed. Frank came out to our house and quickly capped the window with no fuss or issue. It was such a relief to deal with an honest company and people who saw our situation and were willing to help us. I would highly recommend this company to anyone! They gave some desperate homeowners true piece of mind and never tried to take advantage of our situation like so many others had.

Wonderful people to work with. He listened to all of my concerns, even when I would interrupt him with questions, he stayed patient and kind. I liked him so much that I scheduled a liner replacement on the spot. Looking forward to having them take care of my pool! I'll let you know about the work quality when it's done. But I'm pretty confident things will be done right!

Tom recently installed glass wall tiles under my kitchen cabinets. He took great care and made extensive preparations to make sure the tiles lined up properly around the windows and electrical plugs. The job took a little longer than he anticipated due to the complicated nature of the small tiles with pattern that I chose but the results were worth it. I appreciated how he cleaned up after finishing work each day. I would definitely recommend Tom based on this experience with his work.

We hired Bill to fix a wall in our kitchen and replace the ceiling. Thanks to several solid suggestions he made, we ended up also exposing a brick wall and having some electical work done (mainly installing lighting). Bill and his crew did a great job and have followed up to ensure we were happy with the work. I would (and will) recommend him to friends.

Charles disassembled and then reinstalled a closet system in our new home and he did a great job. In the past I have found it difficult to hire a handyman to do a small job like this, and I found it very helpful that Charles responded immediately to my request for the job. Additionally, he was very flexible and accommodating in terms of timing and availability. We will definitely be hiring Charles again for other jobs around our new house!

The only person I trust to work with my family for any home improvement! If he hadn't helped us last winter I don't think we would have made it. He can do any repairs and he will work with you. He replaced all my water lines, installed new floating flooring, changed out an old electric box for a new one, all new furnace, all new roof. He can tackle the most simple of electrical work to the most advanced house repairs, with ease and is super efficient with time!

Prospective Clients: I met Bill through Thumbtack and he was the most willing and reasonably priced contractor I have ever worked with. Bill and his son Zach were: (1) On time, early actually (2) Efficient -- we chatted about a range of subjects while they did their work (3) Did not try to overcharge me for the work that they did -- $50 (Bill's typical fee is $50/hr) to replace a shower door with a rod and curtain. They did it all in roughly an hour including: (a) Analyzing the problem (b) Helping me find the right replacement at the Busy Beaver nearby (c) Removing the old door (d) Putting in the new rod and curtain Not bad for an hour. And all for just $50 (plus parts -- add $50). TL;DR: Hire this man. *****

In a word...our description of Mark Rogozinski's work is...FANTASTIC! He is worth every penny and MORE. He tackled a concrete job that other professionals had either passed on or provided exhorbitantly priced "solutions" for with absolutely no follow-up. His work ethic is beyond description. He finished our job in a timely manner in the midst of suffering with broken ribs. You cannot go wrong with this professional...he is the real deal and we sincerely hope he is available the next time we need him...L. Bookwalter

They came out and measured the damaged glass and said they could replace it. They then took a damaged screen and offered to replace that free of charge regardless if we went with them or not. After waiting 2 1/2 weeks for the glass to come in, they came out and installed it the next day in a little over an hour. Not complaining about that as every other company we had look at this only offered to replace the entire window for 10 times the cost and at least 2 days of construction. They are definitely my first call for any glass work I may need in the future...

Meredith was fantastic. They were quick to start my roof, and very diligent workers. Everything was extremely professional and their price was very comparable (and in some cases better) than the other quotes I received...I'd absolutely recommend them for any roofing project.

Matt one of the project managers reached out to me and visited my home within 48 hours to provide an exact price for the job, which was definitely competitive and more realistic than the eagle view "rough estimate" everyone seems to be doing now. He also texted me regularly which is something I prefer in general to phone calls. After shopping around, ultimately used them for best price and quality of work as well as willingness to work with me. Crew came in the morning and were completed by late afternoon. Gutters came a few days after roof was completed and were completed in under an hour. Nick one of the founders along with Matt were awesome to work with. It's been about two weeks so far and no complaints. Entire roof and gutters were replaced. Everything looks pretty good, first time having to replace an entire roof but they definitely made the process easy. Also accepts credit cards for same price which allowed me to rack up on some points for such a large purchase/ double insurance. Would highly recommend to anyone within the Pittsburgh area.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
