Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Get free cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you so you’ll know exactly how much you should expect to pay.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

I had my computer at another computer repair shop for a cracked screen. After over 2 months of runaround I finally got it back from them unrepaired. I went on to Thumbtack to find a local computer repair tech and Mike answered. Mike was very professional and reassuring when I explained my difficulties with the last shop. Mike was able to find the right screen for my computer and repair it. I will definitely be giving Mike (Computer Mafia) a call for all my future computer repair issues. He is very knowledgeable. He even optimized my computer and it is now running fast again.

Michael was able to diagnose immediately the problem and get the computer running beautifully in short order. I never expected such a fortunate outcome - I thought the computer was either not repairable or repairs would be expensive. He is a real expert and I would recommend him to anyone with computer problems.

Thank you, Thumbtack, for introducing me to Computer Mafia. I must admit, I found the name of the company intriguing and chose them initially for my computer issues. Now that I worked with the person behind the name, I'm so glad I did. Michael Salfi is quick, responsive, punctual, thorough and does what he says he is going to do. I had three computers and one tablet needing service; one item needed further repair. Michael stayed in communication with me all throughout, was polite, articulate and patient. I am of a different generation, and "computer-speak" is not my "first language" - Michael explained in an easy-to-understand manner what was needed and how to go about making it all happen. I believe his fees are very reasonable, and he has a "portal" where I can see all records of my experience with him: history, payments, invoices, receipts - whenever I need to. I highly recommend Michael and Computer Mafia.

This is very interesting company. I have had my computer well past its warranty, and yes, the computer companies would just love me to purchase a new machine because I now have some hardware difficulties (for example, a battery pack that blew up like a balloon). Actually, I no longer have any hardware problems, all due to TechFix's effort and capability. They did not just repair my computer, they also did all they could to keep my costs down. Wait, a company that does excellent work and also does not charge me an arm and a leg. Yes, TechFix is a very interesting company, and if you have any type of computer problem, I would go to them straight away. Oh, I almost forgot. They are all so decent, and well-mannered, too--very, very professional--just the best!

My iMac had been temperamental since day one - many times I wanted to pitch it out the window! Numerous trips to the “genius” bar with a 27-inch computer was no fun - and got no results. Mike did, though. He diagnosed and fixed numerous issues, which involved taking the computer apart. He was prompt, kept me informed of the repair(s), and was great to work with! He also worked around my crazy schedule. His prices were more than fair and he wouldn’t accept any payment until I was 100 percent satisfied. I don’t expect to have any issues again, but if I do Mike is my guy!

Matthew, straight off the bat, was very patient and prompt in our correspondence through Thumbtack. I had so many questions and concerns that Matthew fully addressed even before the repair. Matthew was able to work around my busy student schedule, making an evening in-home visit, and even arrived early! I had taken my MacBook Pro to two Apple Stores and another Apple certified computer repair store and neither could fully diagnose the issue, or wanted to charge me much more for a flat-rate fix without giving me a straight diagnosis. I first requested a visit from Matthew simply to diagnose the problem that my MacBook was having, he ended up making a diagnosis and fixed the issue all in one visit! I was so impressed! Furthermore, the cost of service and parts was more than reasonable, and ended up costing me much less than the quotes I received from Apple. Matthew reassured me that if the problem still persisted that he would make every effort to see that the issue was fully resolved. I am 120% satisfied with the service that I received from South Philly PC Repair. Thank you so much for your outstanding work!
