I was extremely skeptical with hiring someone to capture my husband's surprise 30th. I had many bad experiences with "professional" photographers and videographers and I wanted to make up for our wedding day disaster. I took the chance and hired Paolo and neither my husband and I are disappointed. He was very professional from the beginning to the end. He captured all of the best moments of my husband day and that alone made him happy. Thank you again for your great work and thank you for keeping your word to deliver the best which you did. Imma

Our daughter and son in law were opposed to having a videographer at their wedding. They felt that videographers are very obtrusive with their equipment and lighting, spoiling each special moment. My husband and I were not happy. We decided to source a videographer that would be unobtrusive and produce a special video. Lotus Studios came highly recommended by a friend. We looked at some of the videos produced and loved their work. Dealing with them was seamless and each team member was a delight to deal with. The videographers were able to work in well with the photographer, not spoiling each others work. The video produced was beautiful. The day of the wedding disappears with the blink of an eye, we missed so many special moments and by having the video we are able to see the wedding in so much more detail and relive our daughters special day. What a special momento to have, one that we will share with grandparents, family and friends. So glad that we insisted on a video for our daughter and son in laws wedding.

When my daughter announced she was engaged, among the many things I needed was a Videographer. Since I work in a large corporate travel company, I went to our marketing department who recommended Digital Video Artistry since they use their services for promotional videos for the company. I spoke with Don Check, their Director to go over different options and ideas. He displayed both professionalism and creativity. I was very pleased with the wedding video clips I was shown and surprised to learn that they even attend the rehearsal. When I received the finished product, I was overwhelmed! I could not believe how much detail and intimacy were captured. Both my daughter and her new husband were in tears as they watched the video for the first time. The video had a way of making that special day come alive once more to everyone. To say my expectations were met would be a gross understatement. Digital Video Artistry worked their talent and magic. The end result in their work was both amazing and awesome. I would highly recommend Digital Video Artistry to anyone who wants personal attention, unique images and unforgettable memories for a lifetime.

We were not initially planning on hiring a videographer so when we called Michael it was only a few weeks before our wedding. He made it a point to visit the venue even though I could not make it there to meet him and he communicated all his ideas and concerns immediately. He was hands on throughout the process and even the day of the wedding he made sure that the venue did exactly what he needed them to do to get the best results. His attention to detail was also captured in our video. Throughout the night he made sure that people were in the right places and he set up a few scenes that worked great and the lighting and sound were also perfect. Michael is very diligent professional and above all else he truly wants to produce the best results and make his clients happy. Our video is absolutely fantastic and so is the clip that he made for us. I highly recommend him!

My experience with Art Contra was exactly what it should be when dealing with a photographer/videographer -- knowledgeable, professional, and well-prepared. Whether on site or at their studio location, they we're extremely well-prepared and up to the task of not only sticking to the plan, but they were also nimble enough to make adjustments along the way to fit my needs. Will not only recommend, but mostly likely will contact them again in the future as well for more projects. Art Contra Studio is an asset to Thumbtack.

We had a difficult time finding a videographer for our 5/28/16 wedding because we wanted an unedited video. We went out of our comfort zone with looking on thumbtack. We spoke to Jake and he was very receptive with the type of video we wanted and he was very timely with getting back with us to discuss our next steps. He showed up very early the day of our wedding to get familiar with the surroundings. We were very satisfied with the finished product. Our wedding video was everything we dreamed it would be. You would not go wrong with booking Jake for your special day!

I contacted Jeff because I had seen some of his work and was impressed that although he shot a wide range of subject matter, you could see the art of his craft in all of his pictures. I needed portrait work done, some "yoga shots". It was easy to contact Jeff and enjoyable to talk about the job and necessary logistics. He valued my opinion and offered his expertise when needed. The day of the shoot he really showed his dynamism. I arrived to the location early to warm-up for any poses. As Jeff was setting up I was finishing the warm-up. I envisioned holding poses statically during the shoot, you know, to get them "perfect”. With great insight, he suggested he shoot as I continued to move as if no one was there. I instantly agreed and was in my natural state on the mat and Jeff captured these moments beautifully. Moreover, he captured the energy of the poses, too. I plan to reach out to him for more services in the future and would recommend him for any photography needs. Since then, I have learned he is a excellent filmmaker/videographer, too. He surrounds himself with very competent people to form an team for events that require it. BOOK HIM NOW!

The videographer had to cancel due to finding full time employment; however, he let us know as soon as he found out, so we had plenty of time to find another person. He was always professional and quick to respond to emails. His pricing was very reasonable too.

Ted Mangan was a Godsend. After reading my book he reached out to me in order to tell my story in the form of a documentary. I had absolutely no money to pay him. And yet, he felt that the world needed to know what happened to me and why. He decided to drive all the way to Chicago from Allentown, Pennsylvania. He asked for nothing more than compensation for gas. If I'm not mistaken he filmed for 2 or 3 days. As if this weren't enough, he worked closely with me during the editing process to make certain I was comfortable with the final project. It took months until the film was completed; but, the finishing project was moving. Ted Mangan gave me an opportunity to tell the world my story. My trial was stolen but thanks to Ted, I had a chance to release sorrow and pain which had haunted me for more than a decade. Ted Mangan is more than a videographer; he is a humane person. It's been a pleasure and honor to know him. Myra K. Richardson

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
