Tony is extremely honest and I am glad, we choose to work with him. He fixed the broken air conditioner in few minutes of his arrival and also suggested upcoming maintenance and the timeline around it. He would be our go to person for any hvac or plumbing issues in our home. It very rare to find honest person these days and we enjoyed hearing his back story. Please hire him in case of any need. I would vouch for him any time.

3rd party HVAC company came out for service. SBPH does not actually provide the service. I was quoted $79 for a diagnostic. After 1.5 hours, problem not solved but bad control board suspected. I was charged $150. Turns out $79 is for first 30 minutes only. I was not informed of this. I was supposed to get a call about a quote for board which never came. All in all I had to call Oliver Heating and cooling. More expensive, but upfront, and fixed problem two days later.

Set the bar for service level. We are so happy we found Marion and his crew to help us with our HVAC cleaning. So courteous it was confusing. He called to explain his estimate. He answered all of our questions. Then called day before appointment to confirm. Then called on way to my home. Then took shoes off when arrived. Then explained what they were going to do. Did it. Then cleaned up. Then charged us what he said he would charge. And the work was fantastic. Very good people. Thank you!!!

Where do I begin? Benny EXPERTLY replaced my residential heating unit, fixing my 3 previous HVAC guys' mistakes and shortcuts in the process, the biggest of which was a huge condensation problem slowly destroying my chimney, this without the need of installing an expensive chimney liner ☺. And when he discovered air being vented over fiberglass house insulation - a big no-no - he spent at least 3-4 hours removing the insulation at no extra charge, just to do the job right, and because of his concern for our health. He also installed a central AC unit at the same time, which I LOVE. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the extra intake adjustable vent he suggested and installed near the unit in the basement, which recirculates cold/cool air from the basement to the rest of the house when I open this vent and run the fan only function on the unit, cooling the house on those warm not hot days, making the need of running the actual AC unit often unnecessary and saving me $$$. And after he reconfigured the duct work some, so that the reusable hepa filters he provided to us fit snugly in the system, our allergy symptoms immediately became a thing of the past ☺☺☺. He also asked me what kind of thermostat I would like, and installed the perfect thermostat for me, and also color-coordinated it to my decor no less. Beautiful! I love it. And when my water heater recently gave up the ghost, Benny rearranged his schedule to replace it asap, along with adding shut-off valves going to the water heater (perfect), another expert installation of another fine quality unit, these jobs WELL WORTH their very reasonable costs...I've never written a review before for anything, but felt compelled to sing Benny's praises. From now on he's the only HVAC/plumber for me. Do not think twice!

Great service, spent the time to discuss some specifics about my new ecobee3 thermostat and even assisted with its configuration. Also shared some general information about the use and maintenance concerns for my HVAC system. Satisfied with the experience and the attention, where none of the other established companies in my immediate area were willing to do this project all having the contingency that I use only their pre-approved smart thermostats.

We typically use one of the bigger HVAC companies to service the oil boiler. This time we went with JC Mechanical and are so glad that we did. It turns out that the other companies were not cleaning the soot out of the boiler and that the path to the chimney was 95% blocked causing a serious fire hazard. Jason removed about 15 gallons of soot by the time he was done. He was extremely thorough and spent the time necessary to ensure that the job was done right. When booking the job, I asked that his shoes be covered since he'd have to walk through an area where my infant son plays. He did not have to be asked again once he got here and consistently put them on whenever he'd be walking through the play area. It was a pleasure Jason do the work on our boiler and I would highly recommend him.

I could not recommend a better HVAC/R company in the Philly area. Ray gave me an estimate on a job where he explained everything down to the needed calculations to install the correct system. I have used them many times because when I call them I dont have to worry about upselling just a fair assessment of what is needed. I will continue to use EP210 as long as I can.

Greg did an excellent job with our ducts and gave us a very fair price in doing so. I would recommend him to anyone in the market for a duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, or any HVAC cleaning/maintenance. I will definitely be keeping his number handy for future vent and dryer cleanings. Thanks, Greg!

Integrity residential has done several jobs for me over the course of 2 years, including helping with rehab of rental properties, and installing heating systems. Tyquan is very knowledgeable regarding the most efficient and economical way to get the most out of heating/AC and other repairs. He is timely and responsive, while being very competitive in terms of cost. He stands by his work and knows the city codes inside out. I would highly recommend him for both residential HVAC and property maintenance.

Adams HVAC was the fifth contact I made to get an estimate. I had gone on the web to get information about a central air system in my house. In doing my homework I came across Johnathan and he was totally professional when he came to my house to give me the initial estimate. Johnathan was totally on time, punctual when the work was started during the same week. The quality of the work supports the value of the money spent. He even came back the next week to check and see if the unit was operating properly and cleaned up some of the wires that he determined need to be encased. Would use this company for future projects. FABULOUS!!!!!

Due to a previous hvac job that was done very poorly Matt faced a large job at my rental property. He had to reconfigure and install components of my central ac, furnace, and water heater. Matt came out and did the work timely and with utmost professionalism. I have already referred him to friends and family. Matt is extremely knowledgeable of his craft and does top quality work. Thank you Matt!

The technician Steven Yan, was excellent. He could relate to me wanting the best financial option and not just upselling me on things. He went above and beyond in various ways and I applaud him for the level of customer service he provided. Being in a field of install & service technicians, I know how important it is to "wow" the customer. Steven, certainly did this.

So glad I met Al and E B Williams! I had met several HVAC companies that gave me quotes. They just came in unprofessional, barely looked at my system, and threw quotes on the table. I was so uncomfortable with all of them. I didn't know the differences in equipment, qualify, or anything. Al and E B Williams walked me through the entire process! He explained to me how the system works, pros and cons of the systems, why some cost more than others, different financing options etc. The system runs amazing! I have never felt more comfortable in my home. I wish I didn't waste time even contacting the other companies and called Al and E B Williams first!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
