The crew that was assigned for my medical office equipment moving project was fantastic! They were polite, efficient, friendly, helpful and careful. I am going to request that they be the same crew that I receive when the equipment gets moved from storage to the final office location. Thanks Emily!!

Darrel and Mike showed up on time, in fact they were there before me. They loaded a 15 by 10 stacked storage unit into their truck in 45 minutes. Unloaded everything into my brand new house, made zero dings dents in my view. Would recommend to my friends and family. Thanks again guys.

Kingdom turned up with a truck that wasn't big enough for the job. I was moving 60 miles and they made a drop off and then went back for the rest of my furniture. Very impressed with the service - I would recommend them for going the extra mile, or in this case 120 miles!

Had a "yucky" job.... moving my son's belongings out of a low-ceiling basement (I'm 6'1") and knew that 50% of what was down there unseen would have to be trashed. In the midst of making 20+ calls to local movers and dumpster providers, we received a quick response from David / Kingdom Movers with an initial bid. This was my first experience with Thumbtack so I was a bit leery. I was immediately able to speak with David over the phone and explained my initial plan re: movers transporting all of the contents out of the basement with some going into an on-site dumpster. He outlined his plan of action (3 movers with a 16' truck) and then offered a cost saving alternative -- they would load and dump our unwanted stuff, and then move our saved belongings into the storage unit for a very reasonable price. Date and time immediately confirmed! David and his team showed up and I knew within five minutes, this was going to go much faster than I had ever imagined. He quickly outlined the plan with his team, and all I had to do was review each box/item quickly and designate its "destination" (storage vs. dump). Only one hour and twenty minutes to clear a place packed "Hoarder" style up the basement stairs into 2 piles and into the truck. A small glitch with our local dump sites delayed the move a bit, but it was not problematic especially since the team had included one extra person than originally planned. David actually had to arrange the dump unloading for a separate day/time and the way in which his team consolidated everything to fit into an already packed storage unit was so impressive. David and his team were so courteous, friendly, and never complained about any of the inconveniences, i.e., the heat, the basement, the dump delay, etc. The end price was actually a bit less than we had estimated. I know without a doubt when it's time for our next move, I will not have a problem finding a reputable and incredible moving company.

Chris moved me from a storage unit to an apartment. When I first contacted Chris, he was prompt in responding to me. On moving day they were early. He and is guy had great work ethic. They moved me in 4 hours. When I tried to help carry stuff, Chris discouraged it. He has the belief that the customer should relax while they work. Nothing was damaged. They also set up my beds and took care to seperate my boxes. Overall it was a great and pleasant experience.

We hired JDog to help us unload a rental truck filled with about half of our furnishings. They showed up on time, worked steadily for more than two hours and were careful with our things and with the walls and corners of the house. In addition, a larger crew returned a few days later to finish moving a very large, heavy and awkward armoire that needed to go in the basement. This operation was successful with no dents, scrapes or casualties. I would recommend JDog for unloading and moving. They respect the items and the surroundings. They were great.

I called On-Demand Movers the day before I had to move (not my choice). Lanre had his men there the next day and I had no complaints or problems with them. My original mover, Amish, backed out at the last minute leaving me in a bind. On-Demand was local so I gave them a call. Luckily they could do it, last minute. They moved me to a storage unit & I will definitely call them again when my home is ready, hopefully not at the last minute again. Thanks Lanre and On-Demand.

Once I answered my door and shook the very warm and earnest hand of Bob Barry, I knew immediately that I had found a real gentleman to come and move my spinet piano! As he sat and began to 'make the keyboard come alive'the immediacy of my confidence in his ability to care for my piano was confirmed!! A true professional musician would be in charge of moving the instrument that brings me great pleasure and relaxation. I am grateful to have found Bob on thumbtack, and look forward to continued friendship. I wish him much professional success and anticipate the return of my piano sounding better than ever, because he will also tune it after moving it to my new home! Without any hesitation whatsoever, I wholeheartedly recommend Bob Barry to anyone who requires a piano moved and/or tuned! Warmly, Ida N. Gorman

Manageable moving did a job for me about a month ago. They were cheap and fast. They were very careful with my things that's what I was worried about most and they exceeded my expectations on that. But in all they did a great job. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a cheap and reliable moving company.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
