Excellent company with great work ethics. Anthony carefully reviewed in detail, all the landscape work to be done in our backyard, the specific equipment to be used, including the soil removal and "layering" process to assure long term results. Our project was over 3,000 square feet. If we could, we would definitely recommend this company with a 6-star rating.

Dan and his mom (his #1 team member) came to my house to survey the job - planting 5 bushes in the front yard, transplanting 2 bushes along with 3 additional new bushes in the backyard. Additionally, I needed them to dig up a weed that was about 6 inches in circumference that was in way of where a new bush was to go. They came on time for the survey, were very thorough in their questions and examination of the areas involved. I was pleased with the fair price and thrilled that they could fit this work in so quickly even though they were booked up with other jobs. I will definitely use KCs Lawns and Landscaping again and again.

Najee and his team were great! They removed a ton of bamboo from a steep slope in our backyard. It was no simple task but they were quick and efficient. I will definitely use them for projects in the future.

Everything we could ask for in our backyard. I don't think it could have turned out better! We gave Philip and his team a long checklist to include in their design for us and boy did they deliver! Our backyard looks like something from a magazine.

Trevor had the best value of all the landscapers we contacted. We had a tough backyard job that Trevor handled nicely. We are installing a new fence and wanted to extend it to the limits of our property line. However, there was a ton of brush, dead stumps, vegetation, stones, etc., making it impossible for installation. Trevor was able to thoroughly clear out the back yard area despite multiple obstacles. It now looks really good and ready for fence installation. We appreciated that he could accommodate our requests. He was patient and professional. We'll definitely be using his services again for future projects. Thanks to his hard work, we'll be able to expand our fenced property by nearly 1000 sq ft.

Nothing but good things to say about Balco Landscapes! I had just completed two projects with separate big name contractors and the experiences were both horrible. Had I not been on home on several occasions, the work these other contractors did would have been done wrong and not to spec. So I was a bit uneasy when I realized that due to my work schedule, I would not be home for the entirety of the landscaping project with Balco. But, Balco Landscapes showed up every day, on time, and did the work they quoted. The work itself is stunning! The installed 2 flagstone patios over concrete base, a separate stacked stone retaining wall, and landscaped a garden bed horribly overgrown with weeds and planted agreed upon plants. Also planted a dogwood in the very back of the yard. Balco also pulled the necessary permits from Baltimore City (which in itself is no easy task). They quoted 2 weeks to complete the project and they finished in 1 week and 3 days. Harry and his team were nothing but courteous and professional from the moment they showed up in person to discuss design and requirements, through to the project's completion. The morning after the day in which it looked as though everything had been completed, I spoke directly with Harry to make sure they were done so I could finalize payment. Indeed they were... but Harry was already on his way to my house to shore up a joint line in one of the patios that "he wasn't happy with." I didn't ask him to do it... i didn't even recognize what he was talking about... but he came out on his own to take care of it. That is owning your workmanship. And that is respect for the homeowner. This is how working with contractors should always be!! They are already my decided choice for some additional work I'll have done in a few months. If you have landscaping needs, you'll be in good hands with Balco! A+ across the board.

Torres Landscaping did a great job of topping and trimming the evergreen tree in the backyard. He was very responsive and communicated his plans regularly. He arrived right on time and cleared and hauled the trimmings away! I recommend him without reservation!

Joe and his guys work quickly. He's always ready to offer advice on plantings and other landscaping/lawn issues. Affordably priced and shows up when he's scheduled (weather permitting of course). We've used him for mulch, edging, spring clean up, planting trees, and walkway/garden design and have been pleased with the work.

Weaver landscaping did an awesome job. We needed a paved walkway installed and they gave us different design ideas and options to choose from. They got the job done in the time frame they estimated and were very professional. We have since used them for lawn care, mulching and landscaping. We couldn’t be happier and recommend them highly.

Cassello provided timely, very high quality work at a very good cost. Not only did they do a great job removing a very tall tree, numerous stumps, and alot of yard debris from my property, they did an excellent job cleaning up the grounds afterwards. Thanks to them my backyard looks much better and is much safer for my son to play in. Thank you!!!

They did what was asked and the outcome was as expected. My only comment is that the garden installers were left to their own sense of design and did not have a drawing or explicit instructions on plant placement to work from. This was a concern only because I did not get the feeling that they were as knowledgeable about garden DESIGN as they were about garden planting. But, it still came out very nicely and I received what I requested and paid for.

Darlene was sent to us as an angel out of heaven. We needed to water our garden for the next several weeks until our irrigation system is installed. None of the Max-sellers or Poorly-staffed-boys in the neighborhood came through for us. We were tearing our hair out! Not only does she water but she has a green thumb and is bringing vim, vigor and vitality...not to mention color....to our garden! Like a leprechaun she brings magic with her handy hose and trowel. Weeds and evil not so dandy lions: you’re on notice! Go, indeed, Darlene Waters!!!!

Randy and his team did a great job on my little backyard patio! I would highly recommend them for your job. They had the best rate and went above and beyond what I was expecting. He gave me an estimate and a time frame, but was able to get the job done in advance of what I was expecting. I am thoroughly enjoying my new outdoor living space!

Right from the start, I felt that we were on the same page and Randi understood exactly what kind of landscaping we were looking for. She contacted us promptly for a consultation and drew up a lovely landscape design that included some existing elements and some additional native plants that would grow best in our area. Randi and her helper arrived promptly on the rainy start date and worked diligently through the very rainy week until the landscape project was completed all the while with smiles on their faces. They reshaped and extended the flower beds to create a beautiful flow in the front yard and artistically incorporated rocks into the beautiful design. Randi and her helper were so pleasant and hard working and talented that we highly recommend them to anyone looking to beautify their landscape.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
