Amazing my dogs have learned so much in the past session we had such a fun time learning all we needed to and the dogs are more well behaved then ever because of the commands us and them were taught. The house calls are GREAT especially since one of my dogs doesn't like riding in cars. 10/10 highly recommend this service to others who need dog training.

Denise helped us with our 70-lb 2-year-old rescue dog who has terrible anxiety and was afraid to go outside of the house. It was pretty much impossible to walk her on a leash. We can now walk her without any problems, which feels like a miracle in our house. Denise shows up on time and does what she says she is going to do. She gave my husband a lot of great tools to continue our dog's training. Highly recommend--thank you, Denise!

So far, I am beyond impressed with Virginia’s dog training skills. If our dog not improve it will be entirely on us for not doing our homework. Even after the consultation we saw an improvement: it was as though she’d sat down with our dog and had a conversation about what we wanted from him and he said “ Oh, I wish I had known! You never told me before. “ Highly recommend Gray House Dog training!

Clare is the best! She has been working with our seven month old golden retriever ever since she got home at 10 weeks old. Clear is a fantastic, patient, fun teacher. Half the battle is training my husband and I and she does a good job doing that, too! She goes above and beyond by meeting us at the Pet Depot for a special swim lesson and checks in on our progress throughout the week. I would highly recommend K9 College Dog Training!

I had Rose take care of my dog Rocco for one week. Rose kept me informed on a daily basis and was an outstanding pet sitter for my dog. She took pictures and videos with her and Rocco playing. I felt very comfortable and I knew Rose could get the job done at 110%. I would definitely recommend Rose for any type of pet sitting.

Matt trained me and my 6 month old German Shepard. He is a wonderful trainer. Very patient and knowledgable. He explained and demonstrated each step during our 8 sessions with him, very focused. He made me and my dog a great successful team. I am comfortable to take Lacey anywhere. Would recommend Matt for any dog training. You can not get a better trainer that Matt.

Weather Or Not is a great place to bring your pup. I started having them watch my doggy at various times this past year. My dog returns safe, happy, and with more dog friends. This is a great choice if needing someone to care for your pet for a walk or a night. Great people who love your dog as much as you do.

I have known Lynette for over 20 years, and have never met or known anyone as kind and loving. She treats every animal with great love and tenderness. After watching her with her dogs-I finally decided 10 years ago to get my own dog, one of the best decisions ever!!!! If you are fortunate enough to have her take care of your baby(I mean pet), count yourself as one of the lucky ones.

The experience was wonderful for my dog Cyra and for us as her "parents". I was apprehensive about it at first because we have never had to find a sitter for our fur baby. We met Jordana a few days beforehand and Cyra was fine with her immediately. Cyra played with their two puppies as well. The first meeting went well. Jordana and I discussed what was needed to make Cyra feel at home and the price. The day we dropped her off....she was familiar with Jordana and her puppies. Cyra had a wonderful time, and we got pictures of her throughout our time away. That was a very nice touch. We will be using her again in the future and would also recommend her to anyone who asks. About

I go to the home where most of the unwanted behaviors happen. Dogs and their owners learn better in their own environment, as it is less stressful than traveling to another location for the training. I spend time with each owner learning their goals for a well-behaved dog then work with the owners to achieve that goal. I really train the owners to train their dogs, which gives them a sense of accomplishment and pride that they taught their dog to listen to them and behave properly.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
