Anthony Madonna performed a drywall patch repair, and paint repair on a water damaged section of drywall. He also re-hung our kitchen island light. Anthony completed the work over several days since the drywall repair and painting had several steps. Anthony was always on time and worked quickly and throughly. Anthony covered and protected our floor and island when working and cleaned up after every visit. Also, based upon the work completed the price couldn’t be beat! I would certainly recommend this company for a home repair! We will be using their services again in the spring.

I'd hire JB Weaver again in an instant. It's the best experience I've had in hiring someone for home projects. Had a ceiling installed, several plumbing projects completed, painting, flooring and a variety of other general services. Can't say enough about this company.

I was very impressed with the work that was done in my home. My hardwood floors look great along with the doors that were hung. He even went as far as doing some drywall in my master for free. Not a big job but it showed he cared and i am very happy. I have other work to be done and i am definitely going with them again.

I can't say enough about how pleased we were with Dave and his staff. We had contracted with Dave to install hardwood floors in our family and living rooms. Dave was helpful and responsive to my questions the whole time I was shopping around for wood. Once I found the wood I wanted, he made a commitment to have our floors done within the time frame that we had requested, which was a very tight window of time. His installers worked diligently to complete the job and our hardwood was installed and everything back in order within the time frame we requested. During the install, he stopped by and checked in to ensure everything was okay as well as he stopped by after the project was complete. Dave has a great personality and it was easy to work with him. He is honest and reasonably priced as we had interviewed a few other installers and his quote came in about the same or lower than any of the others. While his price was lower, the service and quality of work was top notch! I will defiantly have Dave and his crew back for more home repairs in the future!

Mark helped us get our house ready to be put on the market. He completely remodeled our bathroom along with our kitchen. On top of installing tile floors and back splash he helped with many other projects. Once we sold our home we had him install vinyl plank flooring in our new house. He is reliable and gets the job done in a timely manner. Mark is very friendly and easy to work with. I highly recommend!!!!!

I bought a row home built in 1940's, that had hardwood floors that needed refinishing. Three estimates-- one said they couldn't be done because too thin plus insulted the wood on the staircase. The estimate came that night but only for the second floor. The second spent a lot of time talking about their family and never got back to me with the estimate. Envirostar not only went through hoops to accommodate my busy schedule, they also prioritized my job due to the urgency before moving in. The owner kept in constant communication with me from the hospital (where he was an in patient) before starting and personally was on the job for entire process. He kept me up to date on all procedures and concerns. The floors are gorgeous! Staining is even and the varnish was bubble free. The staircase and floors look new. Even the painter was amazed (he was there the day of estimate). They cleaned up afterwards and if I had to recommend any improvements, I would request the screens be removed from Windows so any floor dust would go directly outside. I have to take out and wash all screens. The owner followed up afterwards (we had to do all communication via Internet/phone as I was out of town) to make sure I knew everything. Great hometown guy. Would recommend to anyone.

We highly recommend Eric Plomchok and Second Nature Home Improvements. We engaged Eric to take down a wall between our kitchen and dining room, remove cabinetry and a desk and to install 11 sets of cabinets, cabinetry and ceiling lighting, shelving and wallpaper. The result is amazing. The finished ceiling blends so well that it is impossible to see where a wall might have been. Eric’s care and attention to detail in all of the work he completed is extraordinary. No seams are visible in the wallpaper, the numerous relocated electrical switches and outlets are in perfect places and no nail marks are visible in the cabinetry. The last bit of work left of the original job is matching the wooden floor boards where the wall once stood and we trust that, given his track record so far, this will be completed soon and will look terrific. Eric is professional, friendly and always cleaned up at the end of the day. He was also very patient when changes were made to original plans. We came to think of him as family and to trust him in the house when no one was home. We were so impressed with his work and so reluctant to see him go that we kept finding other things since he was so proficient in so many areas! In addition to the original work he was engaged to do, we also engaged him to help install new electronic temperature controls and a keypad system for our garage doors. Unfortunately, now that Eric has completed the extension of the kitchen in such exemplary fashion, the rest of the kitchen looks old and tired and needs updating! As a result, we have asked Eric to provide estimates for the kitchen update as well as a remodel for our master bathroom. Again, we highly recommend Eric and Second Nature Home Improvements! My experience with Beautiful Builders was great! I had a walk-in shower installed last Spring by "professional contractors'. The caulking was ugly, not done correctly, and just a mess. They worked tirelessly to get the mess cleaned up and installed new, professional caulking. It looks beautiful. I will post before and after pics once the plastic strips are installed to keep water from coming on the floor. They also put together some shelves for a pantry then arranged all our cupboard stuff and even cleaned the floor and dusted. Chelsea & Jessica are fantastic! I will be arranging for other jobs and they are my number one to contact. Very satisfied.

Jeff put tile in our shower and laid a tile floor in our bathroom and entranceway. He has great suggestions if you aren't sure what you want. And we still receive compliments on how beautiful the bathroom & flooring look. I definitely recommend his services and will use him myself in the future if/when the need arises.

Wallace remodeling and carpentry was extremely professional courteous and fairly priced. They worked with us to get exactly what we wanted within the budget we were looking to spend. The care that was taken during installation protected our hardwoods from the front entrance to the project location. At completion the house was left in impeccable status. I would recommend Wallace to friends and family and will be using them for future in home projects. Ps.. we love our backsplash!

Chris was excellent to work with! We had a variety of renovations that needed to be completed in a short period of time and Chris completed all of them efficiently and beautifully and at a very reasonable price. He does excellent work and is a pleasure to work with. And after Chris had completed the primary projects, I asked him if he could install a wood floor for us. He quoted a reasonable price and was able to complete the work in one day. I highly recommend Master Built and Chris DeCicco!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
