Introduction: With almost 40 years of experience performing, studying voice and teaching in Europe and the States, I have thoroughly researched and developed a completely physiological method of training the voice which involves strengthening the specific muscles which control the singing voice while simultaneously eliminating all unnecessary muscular involvement. This technique is highly effective and extremely efficient. Many students who studied for years with other teachers have said that they felt they had made a year’s worth of progress in the first month of lessons. This technique works equally well for all styles of singing. I also coach songs and repertoire, provide vocal therapy and career counseling and am available for pre-production and co-production of vocals for recording sessions. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Teaching from the University of Central England, U.K., and a Master of Music Degree from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia.

I’ve studied voice with a number of teachers, including some in New York who teach Broadway and opera professionals. John Peters is by far the most knowledgeable and effective I have ever seen. John can, of course, act as a coach to help you prepare for auditions and performances. But John's unique strengths are that he really understands how the body works to produce good sounds, and he knows how to communicate to his students so they can get it, too. If you are a beginner – and it’s surprising, most of us actually are, even if we’ve studied with other teachers for years – John has a series of exercises to get your breathing and vocal cords working the way they should. If you’re an experienced singer, John is uncanny at immediately identifying the flaws in your technique and assigning special vocal exercises that address them specifically. He quickly enlarged my range from barely an octave-and-half to way more than two octaves, got my tone to resonate much more richly, and developed my vibrato into a dependable part of my voice that I could control. I recommend John very highly. He's that very rare vocal professional who is equally at home teaching the whole gamut – from rock singing to country music to Broadway and opera "legit" technique. Whether you’re a beginner who wants to sound better, or a working professional who wants to take his or her career to the next level, John knows how to pitch his instruction to you as an individual and help you achieve your goals.

Through a mutual colleague, I have found a most amazing Voice Teacher! My daughter has been studying voice with Mr. Peters for a little more than 6 months and the progress has been amazing. He's not a clock-watcher and spends the time he needs to accomplish what needs to be done for each lesson. He is always responsive to my questions and concerns and has taken a geniune interest in my daughter's development and success. I drive more than 3 hours round trip, once a week, because I was so impressed, not only with his credentials, but how well he was able to connect and establish a positive working relationship with my teenager almost immediately. She remains just as enthusiastic 6 months later as she did on Day 1. As her parents, we continue to be extremely satisfied with the quality and level of instruction that she is receiving from him. I highly recommend Mr. Peters with a small caveat.....this is a teacher for the serious, committed learner who seeks to improve their vocal abilities.

John was the first person to talk to me about the mechanics of my voice in a graspable way. I finally understood the muscles, make-up and function of my instrument, and, being a dancer, that made so much more sense to me than the etherial idioms so many other teachers tried to convey. I finally had exercises and drills that I could work on daily. I was able to relax certain muscles, strengthen others, and learn to "play" my voice the way it was meant to be. That, coupled with the professional, organized, safe space that he provides in his home studio, gave me the courage to practice, trust and succeed. I am proud to call myself a singer, now, and John had a heck of a lot to do with that. I am grateful!

I am a true amateur rock singer looking to simply understand my instrument and improve my skills. Jon has been fantastic at building a foundation of understanding for me and working with me patiently. He is a committed and passionate teacher and expects alot from me, which I appreciate.

John is an exceedingly knowledgeable and experienced teacher with reasonable rates and good availability. His methods get results, and I learned quite a lot during our time together.
