Louis and his band recently performed at our wedding. Everything about our experience with him and his team exceeded our expectations. In the months leading up to the wedding Louis and I had several check-in conversations to discuss the type of feel my husband and I wanted for the event, special song requests, etc. We asked for several songs outside the traditional set for our ceremony and they performed them beautifully. We had so many compliments from guests about how wonderful Louis and his band were. The sound was simply perfect. I would 100% recommend Louis and his band for other weddings or special events. He's wonderful.

The Matt Santry Band was great! They had our guests out on the dance floor the ENTIRE night... it was packed! I've never been to a wedding where so many people were dancing. The band was upbeat and fun and Matt Santry was a great emcee to get our crowd going! Matt himself responded in such a timely manner and was always quick to help us navigate the wedding planning process. We had a lot of questions and very specific requests for what we wanted to hear, and Matt went above and beyond to make our wedding perfect. We have already had guests and other vendors ask questions about Matt and the band and how to contact them for their own events. Huge hit and would definitely recommend to anyone else looking for a fun wedding band!

Scott Samuels played for us this past Saturday for 4 hours in the heat on our deck and it was wonderful. It was a surprise 70th birthday party for my husband and about 30 of our closest family and friends attended. He was very professional and arrived right on time. I provided a list of songs prior to the event and he took requests, too. Everyone loved it. He involved the audience in a few songs, too. I would highly recommend him and hope to use him in the future.

Testimonial for David Joel, Guitar Instructor: My name is Ken and I have been playing guitar for 43 years since the age of 12. I took lessons for about 2 years at the very beginning. I never learned how to read music in the traditional sense, just tab. I have played in classic rock bands over the years. Several years ago I reached a point in my playing that I felt I could not get any better and was playing the same music, leads over and over again. I was convinced that all I could learn was what I could hear or was shown by other musicians. I knew I developed bad technique habits over the years as well. I wanted to get better and began looking for an instructor on-line and found David Joel. A brief review of David’s web-site indicated he was well-versed in all styles on electric, acoustic and classical guitar. The backbone of David’s approach is based on the Berklee Series Modern Method books by William Leavitt. It requires the guitarist to read and play music…something I never did and as it turns out contributed to my “illiteracy” or lack of language or “data” as David refers to music. In the 2 ½ years that I studied with David he completely changed my technique, increased my potential to play a variety of styles and improvise and helped me to achieve many of my goals as a player. He is amazingly encouraging and very real when it comes to students of all ages. I currently enjoy playing in a number of classic rock bands and praise band at church. Thanks David!

Dorothy played violin for my September wedding ceremony as well as the violin part for our first dance song. She is a true professional and an all around pleasure to work with in any capacity! Her skills with the violin have only increased over the past few years and she is an absolutely beautiful player. I could seriously listen to her playing all day. Additionally, Dorothy was very helpful in picking out the music for the ceremony. I have a lot of experience singing with choirs during Catholic masses but I was overwhelmed by trying to select pieces to use during our mass and wedding ceremony. Dorothy and I Skyped, she played little segments to remind me of the songs and then we made our selections together. Thanks to her guidance, this process was quick and painless. She also worked long distance with the church music director and I heard only positive feedback from the other musicians and church staff. Even with being states away from me and the church, Dorothy pulled off a beautiful set without even breaking a sweat. I can still hear the sounds of her beautiful violin on our wedding day and it brings such joy to think about. If you are considering Dorothy for any project, do not hesitate. She is the best decision you could possibly make!

Rad and Kell are the best band for any event but our wedding was especially amazing because THEY were there!!! We can’t express our appreciation enough and we would recommend Rad and Kell over any other “wedding band” because they are simply more real and more fun. The energy and the way they read the crowd is incomparable!

The Jersey Sure Cats performed at our wedding on April 7th in Allentown, NJ and were absolutely awesome. The songs they performed were varied and their voices harmonize beautiful. Sam, the lead singer, has a fantastic voice and really made our wedding song, All of Me by John Legend, her own. I have received tons of compliments from my wedding guests on how great the band played and how they enjoyed the variety and tone of their music. The wedding reception was held in a small banquet hall and they played quietly enough that you could enjoy both their music and be able to talk to and hear others at your table. I highly recommend the Jersey Sure Cats for any type of gala. They are very reasonably priced, easy to work worth and best of all, an excellent band. Please don't hesitate to consider them as they are truly the BEST!

Carly is a complete joy to work with and there truly cannot be enough said about Willow Brook Strings' talent!! They recently played for my wedding ceremony and were the perfect compliment to our outdoor venue and special day! Not being well versed in classical music myself, Carly was quick to help me pick song selections for the procession/recession and provided samples to ease the process. I would suggest these women for anyone looking to add a musical vendor with grace, beauty and professionalism to their event!

This group is amazing. The music is intricate, and upbeat. The music weaves back and forth between each musician. You would never guess that the band leader is young by watching his professionalism. Their love for jazz is so apparent not only in the talent expressed in the music but it is a pleasure to watch them perform.

I try to keep the marriage ceremony under twenty minutes and at the same time convey the seriousness of marriage. I feel it is important (but I have gone without) for me to meet with the couple and go over their wishes and talk about marriage.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

        • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
        • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
        • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
