My 6 month old German Shepherd became pushy and started to become defiant. Elaine showed me that I gave him to many liberties when he was smaller and now he is beginning to understand that I am the Alpha

The absolute BEST! We have 6 dogs and had him come in to help with our rescued German Shepherd. Within 5 minutes he assessed the problem and now we have a wonderful family member and protector. The change is amazing. We would recommend him for all types of training. Scarlet has blossomed into the happiest dog. Without Steve this would have never happened. We recommend him all the time. He is 5☆☆☆☆☆

Sandy was very helpful in training and calming down my 9 week old German Shepard puppy. She taught her how to sit and respond to her name in just the first session! She came to the house today at 2 and brought us treats and other helpful training items to use when she left. I started reinforcing the commands she showed her today and I can't believe how much progress she's made over just 24 hours! Sandys the best and I highly recommmend her to anyone with a wild, out of control dog.

My 3 year old German Shepherd started having some behavior issues when he started sensing that I was pregnant. Anna was very sweet and professional, she knew exactly why he was suddenly nervous around me and gave me some tips to help him with this transition. After day 1 of trying her advice, things already started improving. Even after she leaves your house, she checks in to see how you and your dog are doing and always answers any questions. Anna is affordable and truly cares about helping her clients and their pets.

We hired Heather to help us with our incredibly smart but VERY willful Australian Shepherd puppy. I felt fairly confident in raising a puppy who was high drive, after having a border collie, but this puppy definitely challenges us. Her advice has been wonderful and is helping greatly. It's clear she has an understanding of how a dog's mind works and we love her approach. We have one more session to go but feel confident that we have it under control. An added bonus is that she assured us that she's always just an email/text/phone call away, well after we are done our training. I'm not sure what else we could ask for.

We had two separate vacations this Summer, with one week home in-between. We did the two week training package and used one week per vacation. Kayla usually likes to have both weeks run consecutively, but she agreed to do them separate for us. We understood that the week in-between we really had to work with our dog. Our dog is a 1 year old German Shephard. He was a kind dog before Kayla, but he has surpassed our expectations. He is so well behaved and responds to the commands she told us about. Everything we asked her to work on and things we did not think of, Kayla got our dog to do it all. He is so amazing and we are so proud of him. We are so grateful to Kayla. She was wonderful to work with and we will be using her in the future for boarding (our dog loved her). We can't brag enough about her and we would refer her to anyone for training or boarding. She has a special way with animals.

I tried 2 other dog trainers before working with Matt Ferramosca @ OLK9 training...what a difference! Matt is the best trainer I have ever worked with! I have a 2yr old energetic and very verbal German Shepherd .After his 2 week board and train, Alex is a different dog! I have walked him off leash in a park during a very busy weekend with people kids bikes and other dogs and he was wonderful! I rec'd many complements but referred the compliments to Matt at OLK9 Training. And the training doesn't end there! Matt is always available via phone text or email for questions and concerns! I highly recommend Matt and OLK9 Training for all of your training needs for big and small dogs of all breeds!

I do competitive dog sports. I have gone to Joe's K9 Training for coaching this past year.Joe has such a vast knowledge of dog behavior and training and is so willing to share it. Really enjoy watching his nationally competitive dog, Graff. Joe's K9 Training is fairly priced for high quality training. Due to Joe's help I and my female German Shepherd Dog have won High in Trial twice. i have observed Joe training clients with their dogs and the results are consistently above the rest.

Bryan is amazing with dogs! Bryan trained our Rhodesian Ridgeback to heal and listen off leash. We also purchased a German Shepherd from Bryan who we absolutely love. Moving forward we would only purchase German Shepherds from Bryan. He knew our family and our dog is a perfect for for us. You can see that Bryan knows and understands a dogs behavior and temperament. He is also always very responsive to my questions and available to work with the dogs if we have something in particular we we want reinforced.

We had adopted an older german shepherd who seemed sweet and we figured we'd just let her live out her life in our nice little home. Unfortunately, very quickly we found that she was food aggressive and would suddenly snap at us and anyone we came in contact with, for no apparent reason. Within 15 minutes of meeting our Mattie, Jodi informed us she was deaf! The shelter hadn't known that, and of course, neither had we. Once she had identified Mattie's hearing problem, and after she had been been seen by our vet, to rule out any other medical issues, Jodi began re-teaching her & us, good manner using hand motion signals. Jodi even suggested a harness that Mattie could wear during walks that was printed with her name & would warn folks that she couldn't hear and to ask before petting! What a difference! Now she is a favorite among our neighborhood since everyone makes sure they treat her appropriately. Jodi also taught us tactics to reduce her food agression and it is a rare day that she exhibits anything but perfect manners! Thanks Jodi.

I hired Sam when I brought home a German Shepherd pup from a rescue and knew I would need someone to help me learn to train him. Sam had the experience and discipline my dog needed and the patience that I needed. I have learned so much from Sam and so has my pup. We highly recommend him for all aspects of training.

Steve, Stacey the boys and I would like to thank you for training our dog and training us. Dakota is doing great and we are a happy family. I would like to tell everyone some background of our dog. We got Dakota at 10 weeks old (pure bred German Shepard) and everything was good. As she got older she became too protective, to the point where she would not let anyone into our house or anybody even around my family. My wife would bring Dakota to my son's sporting events and would have to stand far away from everyone. We decided we needed to take her for training. The first two places we took her to were 2 local trainers and Petsmart, both places separated us from the rest of the class. Even though Dakota "graduated" from both schools none of our problems were solved. The next in home trainer (Bark Busters) we called had a 100% guarantee or your money back offer. This trainer ended up trying to train our dog from behind our fence he was also scared of her. After two sessions he never came back and also called us and told us to get rid of the dog because it was too aggressive and could not be trained. A friend of mine told me about A-1 Total control dog training academy and he said “he’s the best I've ever seen." I called A-1 and was offered a FREE 21/2 hour class. The class was over an hour from our house, but we decided to give it a shot because it was free and if we didn't get Dakota under control she would have to be put down. My wife and I took Dakota to the class and as Steve was approaching Dakota snapped and bit Steve on the leg. By the way Steve reacted when this happened we knew he knew how to handle her and he was going to have fun doing it. It only took us about 5 minutes to decide to sign up for the class even though it was far from home. We spent 5 Monday nights driving 1hour and 15 minutes each way trying to save our dog's life. Today we have a dog that we can take everywhere. We can have people over into our house and we are the envy of every dog owner in the neighborhood because our dog is the best behaved. Everyone that knew Dakota before cannot believe that this is the same dog. Many people stop me when I am walking Dakota and ask me how I got my dog to be so good, I tell them all about A-1. It took us four trainers to find Steve, but you are the last trainer we will ever need. Anyone who has any type of dog training concerns should bring their dog to A-1. Steve I have given you my home phone number and will talk to anybody that wants to know more, I would be glad to do it because we are forever grateful to Steve. Thanks again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
