I needed some heavy furniture moved from home to a storage unit. PMS told me they could arrive between 8-9am. They pulled in promptly at 7:59am, so were at my door at 8AM. They treated every piece of furniture with the utmost care, wrapping everything. They did not scratch the walls. The job was done in good time, movers were respectful.

We could not have asked for better movers. Darrel and Michael were on time, fast, efficient, professional, and courteous! We had several questions prior to the move and Darrel responded quickly to each one. These guys really knew what they were doing and had our truck packed neatly in no time with room to spare. We would absolutely recommend them to anyone in the area!

Kingdom movers was booked at the very last minute, only 2 days prior to my move as there was a snowstorm coming & I did not want to move in the snow. David Johnson asked lots of great questions in advance so that he could come prepared with the right supplies and dolly's. He confirmed his team would be able to do the job. He brought 3 strong movers to my home, and did a great job. His team was very careful about moving my breakables & furniture out of my rental into my new home. David was very concerned for safety & making sure his guys were helping each other so nobody was lifting too much alone. I appreciated their professionalism and good communication, & the fact that they did the job in just a few hours. I would definitely recommend them to friends/family.

Keystone did a great job at moving my two bedroom apartment. The team of three was punctual, and ready to work. They brought a huge truck that easily stored my stuff. The team also helped me pack up my dishes and glasses in the kitchen. The movers themselves did a fantastic job and moved almost everything without damage (the only thing hurt in the move were a couple of cheap Walmart lamps that were over three years old). They made it a point to double check the clearance on my items through doorways. The staff were polite and courteous, and asked where I wanted my stuff placed once I got to my new apartment (and arranged the furniture accordingly). However, the reason that I didn't score this company a five is as below. As part of my original query (via thumbtack) I had mentioned that I had two bed frames to take apart and move, and that I was moving an hour away (I mentioned both cities in my initial query for movers via thumbtack). The owner initially quoted me 600$ to move everything. However, a day later he called back saying he didn't realize I was moving an hour away, and that the price went up. He also seemed upset that I hadn't mentioned that I had IKEA brand bedframes (as they take longer to take apart). However, he made it work. I felt like I had to apologize for unintentionally deceiving him...though he never asked me that question during the initial intake process. This was frustrating to me, as it isn't something I think of during moving and didn't realize would be a factor.

Pick Up Movers moved all my stuffs, one of the movers asked me to write a review for them if I was pleased with their services. The fact that I’m here pretty much proves that I was very pleased. These guys are amazing. I have hardly seen such hard workers before. All 3 movers were very creative with the packing process and very efficient at taking the pieces out of my house through a tricky front door. I wasn’t fully convinced of their efficiency till all my stuffs were delivered in perfect condition. I got lucky with this company and I’m happily writing a recommendation for them.

I called On-Demand Movers the day before I had to move (not my choice). Lanre had his men there the next day and I had no complaints or problems with them. My original mover, Amish, backed out at the last minute leaving me in a bind. On-Demand was local so I gave them a call. Luckily they could do it, last minute. They moved me to a storage unit & I will definitely call them again when my home is ready, hopefully not at the last minute again. Thanks Lanre and On-Demand.

This time I decided to actually hire professional movers to help me move from Jersey to The Hamptons. My husband and I decided to pay no matter how much it was necessary because we were tired of bad service. In nine days our things were delivered to The Hamptons. The movers were pretty fun and laid back people, making jokes while working and making the process stress free. I liked that they were punctual and professional the entire time. A+ for the entire company, their affordable prices and the professionalism they offer.

1 bedroom apartment from DC to Bethesda 4.5 hours (Mostly my fault). They arrived on time were friendly and personable.I was a bit skeptical if they were able to move everything, they moved everything without a hitch. There were three guys Jacob, C, and Godfrey they were funny and really nice. I didn't lift a finger. Able to fit all my furniture in the room after I thought it wouldnt fit. Proved both my aunt and myself terribly wrong lol. I've never moved before and I have heard nightmares about moving and moving companies. This was perfect smooth and just plain great. If I ever have to move again (hopefully not for another two years) I would 100% use Jacob again. I recommend 3000%! (Even my aunt was impressed....thats very hard to do by the way)

Matthew installed 2 new fans in my house to replace the light fixtures I had in my living room and bedroom. He also wired my laundry room in my unfinished basement. Whenever possible, he gave me options for how I wanted something to look or function. I love that he took the time to make me happy! Thank you Matthew! I highly recommend him!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

      • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
      • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
      • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
      • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
      • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
