I had some wood window boxes on the front of my house and wood around my front door replaced with PVC and painted. John did a wonderful job, it looks great and he was available for any questions I had. The work was done quickly, very clean and high quality. I would recommend to others and use their services again.

Excellent work ethic and attention to details from both Clifton and his other painters...they took their time and did the job correctly even if it meant staying longer than they originally expected...they did not rush through any part of our job and our job was very time consuming...All stained trim, baseboards, doors and windows taped, primed and painted white...very good job and would recommend

Bob took care of a couple projects. Provided good options during estimate process. Replaced a poorly deteriorated rear entry door and transom window, replaced front steps, shored up railings, and put new flooring down on front porch. Work was completed within 2 days. Very easy to work with, and very reasonably priced. Would hire again.

Great work, fair prices, professional service! What a great experience! I had a leak in my rubber roof. They showed up for the estimate and work promptly and even when running a few minutes late, I was notified. While they were on the roof, they didn't just do the job, they looked for any other issues and made recommendations. I have already had them clean the gutters, do maintenance on my shingle roof and a small tile repair project. I will definitely use them again.

Michael and his crew did an excellent job repairing multiple areas on our wooden deck that were rotten and needed replaced, and then painted the whole deck. We were very pleased with the results, the cost was reasonable, and they were punctual and completed the work in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend him for any deck repair job.

John Sullivan is a courteous, conscientious, and thorough contractor. He prepped and painted the soffit around our house, and replaced a rotted section, saving the wood to alert us of an infestation of some sort. What a guy!!

We had an awesome experience with Mike of Umberger Contracting. He was very responsive, punctual and professional. He did quality work on our window screens. While other contractors were willing to do the work, they were not willing to think outside the box and use materials that were not the norm per our request. We would and will use Umberger Contracting for more of our home projects in the future!

We are very pleased with the work done by them on our patio roof. Even with some additional work we requested that they do, changing out a window to a sliding glass door , it was done professionally and on time. Tom and his crew were very respectful and hard working and cleaned up every day. We will request this company to do some other work for us in the future. I would recommend them to others needing work done on their home.

Overall we were very impressed from start to finish with the process of getting our new windows and sliding glass doors from Window World. Appears we have saved quite a bit on our heating bill over the winter season so the windows will slowly pay for themselves. We appreciate the smooth process and quick install, thank you!

The worst part about the projects we had completed with Angel are that they're over, so we don't get to see Angel on a daily basis any more. Over the span of the last several months Angel and his team have completed several projects for us, and every one has been done with extreme focus on doing things the right way and making sure we're happy with the outcome. Angel really can do it all, from plumbing to electrical to carpentry to drywall and beyond. There's nothing we've asked of him that he's not been able to excel at. The projects he's completed for us include: 1) Rewiring and replumbing our entire basement which was a mess of 60 years worth of "DIY" jobs gone wrong and old wiring that needed to be replaced. He called out a plumbing issue he saw (corroded pipes that water would fall from if they were tapped), which we hadn't originally asked him to do because we didn't know it was a problem. He quickly replaced all of the main lines coming into the house and those feeding into the first floor. 2) Replaced 6 basement windows for us that had been causing water issues. He and his team had to repair and replace a great deal of damaged concrete and framing to get the new windows in, and I can't even begin to tell you how much of a difference it's made in our basement. We had actually consulted with two other "window installers" about the job, and they both came in with ridiculous costs, and weren't even going to address the issues we raised to them. Like I said, Angel focuses on getting everything done right. 3) Our freaking awesome kitchen remodel!!! Angel and his team demoed our old kitchen, moved all of our gas, plumbing, and electrical lines (and installed new ones), moved a load baring wall, installed new flooring, built and installed our cabinets, and installed our appliances. The result is absolutely everything I dreamed. If you're looking for someone to help out with some small tasks around the house, or to do major construction for you, I simply could not recommend Angel more highly. He's honest, trustworthy, kind, and extremely talented at his trades.

Working with Jeff was excellent! He was very responsive, gave great suggestions on what we could do and talked over everything before starting so we understood what was being done and why. Our home is a 1960's brick ranch with a little bit of siding on the front porch and the sunroom out back. Jeff's team removed an old aluminum awning, replaced all our siding and cleaned up some old scallop decorations to look more modern. With all the rain we have been having, and being a smaller job, I was surprised when he called and asked if they could come on a Saturday and knock it out. We were available, they showed up in the morning and got it done in the day. The crew was very professional, friendly and honestly were so fun having around for the day. They would laugh at me every time they would catch me creeping out the window just being curious to watch what they were doing! I'm incredibly happy with the way everything came out and so excited to have things looking consistent around the house. We will certainly think about hiring Jeff and Icon again in the future.

I didn't think I'd be able to get this project done because of the outrageous quotes I'd previously gotten. I decided to try one more time, and I'm so glad I did! Val Mor did a wonderful job replacing my wood balusters with iron ones, and at a fantastic price.

Susquehanna Valley Window and Door were absolutely great with installing a new basement window. They basically installed a window from scratch, taking out all the old wood that was blocking the hole and leaving no mess. It only took the guy a couple hours, and we love the result. The price was affordable, and my wife and I love that it is a family business. I would recommend to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
