So glad to find a reliable and pleasant handyman. Stephen comes on time - works hard - and completes his job with no fuss. Look forward to hiring him for all future handyman jobs. File cabinets unpacked and moved to the 2nd floor. Materials hauled away. Great worker who does the job he was hired for.

There's a reason Steve has so many positive ratings - because he does a great job at a reasonable price! For months I've been trying to find cabinet professionals to fix my cabinet, and they either wouldn't do the job or they would charge $300 for a house call. I was ready to give up when Steve gave me a quote well below what cabinetry professionals were going to charge for what was in my mind a very simple fix. Steve quickly arranged a time to meet a week later, called the night before to confirm, and came within an hour of the time he thought he'd be here. He not only fixed the cabinet, but re-enforced it and strengthened it. I appreciated Steve's attention to detail and crafty solution but also making sure it would last. The price ended up being as quoted which was great, and after all is said and done, I have a fixed cabinet! He also does audio/video and other home repairs, so if there are other things I need, I won't hesitate to call him up again!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WORK!!!!! I hired Jacques to fix a painting job gone horribly wrong. When I first spoke to Jacques my idea was to just put wallpaper up to cover up the awful walls in my bathroom because I thought I was going to have to spend an arm and a leg getting the walls redone. Jacques came to my house to give me a free estimate, and brainstormed with me different ways to fix the walls and trim at a price that would fit my budget. As a person, Jacques is hardworking, courteous, easy going / no pressure, and dedicated to his craft - his work is phenomenal! Before Jacques fixed my bathroom walls and trim, I was crying tears of disgust, and when he was done, they turned into tears of joy! Jacques turned what I imagined my bathroom should look like into a reality. His quotes are EXTREMELY reasonable for the amount and quality of his work - he skim coated the walls, put nice trim along the floor, re-did trim around the door, primed and painted the walls, removed an ancient medicine cabinet, patched holes with drywall, installed a new light, plug, and came up with a great solution for a 1 inch gap between the sink / vanity and wall. I am beyond impressed with Jacques and his craftsmanship. When all the work was done, you couldn't even tell he had been working in that room by how clean it was (it was cleaner then when he started the job). I can guarantee you that when you hire Jacques, you are hiring a true professional! Since he did such a fantastic job with the bathroom, I'm rehiring him to fix the walls in my living room and hallway. He's definitely a contractor you want to hang onto!

Jeff built and installed a new kitchen island and kitchen cabinet doors to my liking. While his pricing is comparable to other quotes I received from other contractors, he is very transparent about every cost and strives to give you cost-effective solutions. I had a great experience working with Jeff and am happy with the end-result. Working with Jeff is a pleasure - he's very responsive to text messages, phone calls and emails and flexible with his work and timeframes. He goes the extra mile to accommodate every small request, while providing valuable input, opinion, and experience. It's obvious that he cares most about the quality of the end product and customer satisfaction and I look forward to working with him on future projects as well!

Wayne and Sara sit at top of my Thumbtack list so far. They are honest, friendly and professional and did a great job for me making a very nice laundry cabinet and taking care of some finish carpentry. I'm totally happy with their work and will hire them again for the remodeling of my kitchen in couple of weeks.

Barry did a fantastic job on my mudroom built-in cabinet with four coat cubbies, cubbies above and boot storage below. He was working with an unusual existing space that had uneven walls. It came out EXACTLY as I had pictured and I am thrilled with how sturdy it is and how beautiful it is. Barry is an excellent communicator, has a pleasant and respectful demeanor, and is a craftsman and professional. He was punctual and did the work quickly and well. We will use his services again.

We hired V & C to replace an old falling apart wooden fence. From start to finish it was a pleasure working with Joao and his crew. They arrived early each morning and worked hard throughout the day. It was not always an easy task and involved a lot of custom sizing along our driveway. The finished product was better than I thought possible. They also could not have cleaned up more thoroughly then they did. We will definitely be using V&C for other work!

Tim and CJ did a great job moving kitchen cabinets and installing an over-the range microwave for us. They arrived on time, worked quickly and efficiently, and left the work area nice and clean. And the price was very reasonable; less than his initial estimate. They were friendly and did good work; I'll call Tim again!

We needed to install a microwave/hood over the stove. There was only a hood below the cabinets. We hired Mark to present us with options for reconfiguring our cabinets. Mark cut the cabinets and doors and installed our microwave for us. He did an excellent job with the cabinet and the install. He was very personable and easy to work with. My wife and I are very happy with the finished product. We are currently getting a quote from Mark for future cabinet work/refinishing.

They remodeled my kitchen this past summer, including the demo, and installed new cabinets, tile, backsplash, and re-finished the wood floor. It was completed in a reasonable time without any surprises. I would recommend them for any project, big or small.

I had a bathroom from the 1970's complete with a blue tab and tile. All the tiles along the tub were falling out and leaking. I called Bathfitters, and they wanted an exorbinate amount to fix it. Tony came out and gave me some fantastic ideas. First of all, he suggested we retain the blue tub, which I wanted to do, and which makes the bathroom unique. Then he suggested a bring in a neutral wall tile, BUT add aborder of blue tile that would match the bathtub and bring the room together. He also quoted me for a new floor, painting the wall, installing a new toilet, and moving and reinstalling a heavy cabinet. He work was impeccable. He was always on time. He price was unbelievably less than Bathfitters to do all the work. He also did extra work, like personally refinishing some work along the border of the shower. He went out of his way to do an amazing job. I would highly recommend him for his attention to detail, creativity, and willingness to work with the client.

Gary custom built a wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets and shelves in the living room of our duplex-style condo. The end result was fantastic. It looks as though it should always have been there and we have excatly what we wanted in terms of functionality and style. From the begining of the project, Gary designed the space to take into consideration our needs, provided a detailed drawing of the layout, which allowed us to visualize the space. He listened to our requests and came up with solutions to make the overall plan functional and very visually appealing. The design included taking into account a depth limitation on upper cabinetry due to a sliding glass door in close promity to the area where the built-ins were installed. The cabinet design was a craftsman/mission style. The entire project was completed in a very quick timeframe from start to finish, with Gary putting in long days to complete the installation over a 2-day period so that we could have it completed prior to the holidays. Gary had great attention to detail and built into his design trim elements to make the finished work look extremely high-quality. He returned to put finishing touches on the job and to custom build a television mount to allow us to mount the tv in one of the built-in openings. Our condo is slanted a bit (due to settling) and he was able to take this into account in the installation with great results. The finish on the cabinets was beautifully done with a white finish he applied to the cut wood at his workshop, which we are very pleased with. Because the finish was applied before installation, we were able to use and enjoy the cabinets immediately once they were installed. I would highly recommend Gary as a very skilled woodworker, extremely professional, highly reliable and responsive.

Working with L.J.V. Carpentry was a dream come true. Leo's a great communicator, puts everything in writing, has an excellent eye for detail. We had him do a complete redo of our kitchen and dining room - all built ins. He worked to install and/or coordinate the installation of all cabinets; appliances; floors; painting; tileing; plastering; all the details AND did the whole job within one month including all the town inspections. Looking forward to having him back to do other work in our home with complete confidence.

Ed is such a talented carpenter ! He measured the odd space where I needed a built in cabinet, sketched it out, discussed a couple potential options and then once the final design was firmed up he arrived and installed it! The final product looked even better than I thought it would ! He's great about knowing where to add a certain design feature and what hardware goes best with what, etc. Talented, easy to work with, makes a minimal mess - I highly recommend Ed!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

    How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
