Deb is an exceptional career coach (and exceptional human being). When I was out of work and professionally disoriented, Deb came to the rescue. By engaging me in thoughtful discussion of my core values, skills and experience, she guided me to reformulate my personal narrative and helped me articulate my professional goals. In supporting me in the development and implementation of customized job-search strategies, I found the confidence and determination to find the job I truly wanted. She was the mirror I needed to discover who I wanted to become. I could not recommend her more highly.

Very grateful to have been given Drew as my coach. He has a way of getting information across so that you understand it. He is very patient; I know I'm not the first person he's explained all this to, yet he acts like it :-) His energy is positive, yet mellow. Really glad to be a part of his team, and I know that I will owe my success to him. Thanks for being awesome Drew!!

I had interviewed two other fitness coaches before Gena and what I loved about Gena from the start was her willingness to listen and customize a plan based on my personal needs, circumstances and abilities. She coaches, encourages, checks in and keeps the experience positive providing the little extra push needed to stay focused on fitness goals that can easily be compromised with a busy to-do list.

I met with Coach Noah a few months back as I was having problems keeping a sustained energy level throughout the day. Sure I could just drink a bunch of coffee but lets be real, that ain't to healthy! By the end of the day I hardly had the motivation to get myself to the gym which would led me to miss days. I know this is a big no no since going to the gym actually helps BOOST energy. Noah had suggested that I try synergy's product Pro Argi 9 which is a natural way to boost energy by increasing NO levels your body. In turn this leads to greater blood flow. After the first few days using this new supplement I could really notice the difference! I must say, kudos to you, coach!

Natasha was, and continues to be, an instrumental part of my young career. Her ability to get young people to market their talent to employers is extremely helpful throughout the entire interview process. I really can’t credit her enough for my early success in sales. I would recommend her services to young adults seeking employment as well as employers who would like someone evaluating potential talent

As a coach Jen is exceptional and incredibly talented. Her gentle, kind and genuine personality combined with a sincere and authentic passion for her profession makes her impact invaluable. Her razor-sharp questions are always delivered with a great combination of humor and hard challenges. She has a unique capability of always connecting moment to the right context and overall purpose of the coaching engagement. Jen provided the appropriate setting and guidance, which empowered me to be more authentically linked to my personal leadership vision. I was ready to honestly look at/into myself. I knew I had something(s) blocking my full potential. I was determined to untangle all the experiences and complications and learned emotional reactions that were limiting and in some ways paralyzing me. I wanted to be the best me possible. If you are ready to live in truth, Judy Silvan is the perfect guide for that expedition into yourself. -Joseph, 11/15/2015.

    About

Be your own hero. Hero (noun) is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. "You're my hero -- me to everyone, all the time!" I'm so fortunate to spend my time surrounded by amazing humans. I'm in awe of their strength, their courage, and their awesomeness. Even when I'm not with them, I turn on the TV, scroll through Twitter or walk down the street and suddenly, I'm in awe of complete strangers (and animals with social media accounts). Seriously, humans (and Internet quadrupeds) are so cool! We live in a world chock full of heroes -- living beings that inspire us, and that we believe are worthy of our respect and total admiration, but, here's the thing. This constant focus on the heroism of others distracts us from our inner hero -- our strength, our courage, and our awesomeness. I mean, look at that cool thing that guy did! How dare we think we can do that? How dare we admit to ourselves that we are worthy of a hero status? Look at all this proof we've collected to explain why we're not cool/smart/rich/creative enough to do the things we want to do and be the people we want to be. Why should we even bother? We're not as cool as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and we never will be! Wah! Lies. The truth is this: We're all heroes to someone, and we really need to start being heroes to ourselves. Let's all put on our big-girl/-boy pants, tie our capes, and soar.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

    • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
    • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
    • Defining your career goals
    • Creating a plan for job searching
    • Improving networking strategies and skills
    • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
    • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
    • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

    Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

    • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
    • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
    • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
    • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
    • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
    • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
    • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

    What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
