Steve has been helping us with some long-needed home repair work. He has re-screened our porch, replaced our corner boards on the home, cleaned out our gutters (up three stories in the back, and then hopped across the roof!!!), replaced the downspouts, replaced some clapboards, and is currently replacing sills and window trim on all of our windows. His work has been outstanding, and he is the nicest gentleman, always polite, knowledgable, and helpful with providing cost-saving pointers. I have already been recommending him to others, and am looking forward to having him back to do some interior work for us in the Fall.

BEST EXPERIENCE!!! OUR HOUSE HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED! Our historic 106-year-old house in East Providence was in desperate need of an exterior makeover. Antonio was really passionate about the project at our first meeting and he had the best pricing by far out of four other companies. We loved working with Antonio and Eddie. They were very professional, friendly, and patient with all of my indecisions and delays mostly concerning what color to paint a house that had been yellow for over one hundred years. The house needed a ton of prep work, including a rusty fire escape that we wanted to keep, an antique door we needed to be restored, and a third-floor window that needed to be replaced because of rot. They did an unbelievable job with everything!!! Exceeded our expectations is an understatement. The work was all done in a timely fashion, even with the hellish summer temps and rains. Everything was cleaned up each day, and we really enjoyed getting to know Antonio and Eddie. We are so happy we met them and so grateful for what they did for our family and our home. Time to start on the interior next!!!

.RMPaolino Construction was contracted to remodel my unfinished basement and install baseboard heat throughout my house. Mr. Paolino and his team did an outstanding job planning and accomplishing this difficult job. The work was scheduled so that it caused me very little inconvenience and all phases of the job were completed on schedule. All of the work and construction materials were of professional grade, and the overall price tag was more than reasonable. I intend to hire Mr. Paolino to do other work on my property. Because my house is 114 years old, many adjustments and accommodations had to be made in order to accomplish everything I wanted. Nevertheless, Mr. Paolino worked around all of the obstacles and got everything done that I requested. And it looks great. I highly recommend his services. The overall project included the items listed below. 1. Cleared the basement of all junk and debris. 2. Removed the old boiler from the basement and 12 radiators and pipes throughout the house. 3. Removed all of the old steam piping, old excess electrical wires and unused gas lines running through the basement. 4. Removed all artificial walls, ceilings and floors throughout the basement. 5. Installed a brand new modern boiler and enclosed it with walls with sliding doors for access. 6. Installed baseboard heaters throughout the three-story house. 7. Replaced numerous copper water pipes with fiberglass pipes and insulated the copper piping that was not replaced. 8. Replaced seven basement windows with new windows. 9. Restored the worn brick walls of the basement 10. Framed the entire basement and installed insulation. 11. Installed and painted dry wall throughout the basement. 12. The electrical circuit box was replaced and electrical and cable ready outlets were installed all around the walls. The electrical circuit breaker, gas meter and water meter were enclosed in a small room with an access door. 13. A utility area was created on a raised platform where a washer, dryer, and sink were installed. 14. The basement floor was covered with an industrial strength carpet. 15. A drop ceiling with large panels with embedded florescent lights was installed.

I contracted with Marine Home Improvements to replace the roof shingles and rebuild the overhanging gable end roof trim work with a more substantial detail than was used previously. Working with Mike, the owner was a pleasure. He was always courteous, Informative and flexible with his schedule when it was necessary for me. We worked together discussing and coming up with a workable detail for the gable end issue which gave me confidence that the detail would be installed properly . Once the materials were delivered we were ready to go. The crew, lead by Luis were on time and eager to go. They worked tirelessly from 7 AM until 7 PM with only a lunch break at Noon time. Their workmanship and work ethic were professional throughout. Luis handled all the carpentry work on the gables and the quality of his work was top notch. He handled all my questions professionally and with patience. Well done, well done all. I've have no problems and highly recommend Marine Home Improvement.

Contacted Arthur about replacing a tub with a shower system. From the start he was great, suggesting things to do that would save on the budget. He was really good working around supplier issues and making sure I was in the loop the whole way. I ended up having him also replace porch stairs that were past their prime and install a storm door as well. Arthur did a great job with a the projects and I would definitely contact him in the future for other jobs.

NKB repaired a leaky shower that had created water damage in the walls and floor around the entrance. They did an excellent job, reasonable quote, and worked very hard to minimize the collateral damage saving most of the floor so that we were able to use the extra tile that I had and not have to rip up and replace the entire floor. They will definitely be my first choice for any next home project.

I hired Ocean Break Construction to replace the wood siding on the front of my house and to repair some of the window trim. Peter and his team did such a great job I had them return to do additional work. Peter provided a professional detail estimate of the work to be performed. He was always on time and completed the work on schedule. He also made sure that everything needed done was done, even if it was beyond the original scope of the proposal. For these reasons I highly recommend Ocean Break Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
