Antonio was simply outstanding. I had a smaller budget but he was open to making something work within my budget constraints. On relatively short notice, Antonio came to my new apartment in Brighton (he was 10 minutes early and beat me there) ready to rock. He went above and beyond and worked a 12 hour day to get the biggest rooms in my apartment finished. There was a ton of trim work, including a custom cupboard that required two coats of paint (inside and out). Not only did he stick around until late into the evening to make sure the rooms were done, but he did a remarkable job. I would highly recommend him and am hoping he'll come back to do a few more rooms :)

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

I am 100% satisfied with the work performed by Boston Best Construction. The company owner, Eduardo Muniz, was present and communicative throughout the process. The sub-contractors ---framers, electricians, insulators, carpenters, plasterers---were all excellent and professional. The work went well and everything looks beautiful. Furthermore, Eduardo did everything the correct way, getting the required permits and inspections, which makes me feel assured that the work was done correctly and to code. I highly recommend this company and I plan on using them again for more work on my house.

Troy was great. We got 3 bids. One was really cheap, one was crazy expensive, Troy was a bit more than the lowest bid but had great reviews on Thumbtack and was great when we met in person. Our bathroom was pretty much a total gut job. We had put a Bathfitter over the old tub and there were layers of old flooring. During the demo, Troy found issues with the framing in one of the walls, the electrical and plumbing were not up to code, among other issues. He got everything fixed and was very clear about any additional costs to fix. He was very responsive and was very flexible. Troy even bought the tile and billed me rather than having me go buyt it and have to return unused tile. With any job, there were some unanticipated things and Troy was very good at adapting and sticking to the schedule, especially during the busy holiday season. He cleaned up and did everything to minimize disruption. The bathroom was a small, 5x7 space and it was in the middle of our house, so there wasn't a lot of room to work but he and team made it work. While he was there, we accidentally broke a cabinet door in our kitchen - Troy and his helper happened to see what happened and actually fixed it for us. We still have to add our light fixture and get final inspection but we're very happy with how our bathroom came out. We'd recommend Troy to anyone (in fact I'm giving my sister his number since she needs a new kitchen floor)!!

.RMPaolino Construction was contracted to remodel my unfinished basement and install baseboard heat throughout my house. Mr. Paolino and his team did an outstanding job planning and accomplishing this difficult job. The work was scheduled so that it caused me very little inconvenience and all phases of the job were completed on schedule. All of the work and construction materials were of professional grade, and the overall price tag was more than reasonable. I intend to hire Mr. Paolino to do other work on my property. Because my house is 114 years old, many adjustments and accommodations had to be made in order to accomplish everything I wanted. Nevertheless, Mr. Paolino worked around all of the obstacles and got everything done that I requested. And it looks great. I highly recommend his services. The overall project included the items listed below. 1. Cleared the basement of all junk and debris. 2. Removed the old boiler from the basement and 12 radiators and pipes throughout the house. 3. Removed all of the old steam piping, old excess electrical wires and unused gas lines running through the basement. 4. Removed all artificial walls, ceilings and floors throughout the basement. 5. Installed a brand new modern boiler and enclosed it with walls with sliding doors for access. 6. Installed baseboard heaters throughout the three-story house. 7. Replaced numerous copper water pipes with fiberglass pipes and insulated the copper piping that was not replaced. 8. Replaced seven basement windows with new windows. 9. Restored the worn brick walls of the basement 10. Framed the entire basement and installed insulation. 11. Installed and painted dry wall throughout the basement. 12. The electrical circuit box was replaced and electrical and cable ready outlets were installed all around the walls. The electrical circuit breaker, gas meter and water meter were enclosed in a small room with an access door. 13. A utility area was created on a raised platform where a washer, dryer, and sink were installed. 14. The basement floor was covered with an industrial strength carpet. 15. A drop ceiling with large panels with embedded florescent lights was installed.

EXCELLENT — HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jay of all Trades for jobs both big and small. I am a real estate professional and have to deal with all facets of construction on a regular basis. I have nothing but praise for this company! I know when I’m working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in the quality of the work they’re doing - and that certainly describes Jay and team he works with. Jay of all Trades has successfully completed 4 different jobs on properties that I have sold over the past 3 months and I have been delighted with both the process and the results on all of them. Jay was aware of my project deadlines and squeezed me in on short notice and started the job on the exact day that the contract stated. This rarely happens in construction. The work was completed in a timely manner and all my questions and concerns were answered. Once the job was completed, the area was thoroughly cleaned and left spotless. My experience with Jay of All Trades has been consistent across the spectrum of projects that we have done together — work is consistently delivered on time and on budget, and to say that Jay goes the extra mile to ensure that you are satisfied with every detail would be an understatement.

I had several painters come and give me quotes, but I knew Sarah was the one as soon as I met her. She was delightful and friendly and didn't talk down to me. As a single female homeowner, trust me, that's not a given. She had great reviews and a Facebook page with loads of pictures of beautiful painting jobs. And her prices are an outstanding value! I had one huge room, basically double height with a loft, and I wanted an accent wall. It had paint with an awful textures finish that needed to be sanded down. I also wanted the trim and the railing on the stairs to the loft. So three colors, two stories, and a 15x25 bedroom with walls had n.

Never though I could afford or have a custom made built in until I met Mike Cyr owner of Eastside Woodworking! Mike reach me back and the easy process of building our new bedroom wardrobe was underway. Mike eased any concerns we may have had, by welcoming us to his home and workshop and showing us numerous custom made pieces in person. Mike took the time to come out and measure our specific clothing pieces and gave ideas on how to best utilize our space. Mike's attention to detail is unmatched with any tradesman I have dealt with and it is without hesitation that I recommend Mike for any custom work your looking to do! Sincerely Ed Fragata

Project was simple enough (for a professional): remove old deck and rotten wood from both balconies from a third-floor condo and install composite everywhere! Greg made it very simple for us, asking questions and taking into account our requirements. He proposed several models and showed us a few samples to give us a better idea. Every step was taken with his professional opinion in mind. He actually made it very easy for us: by email, SMS, phone calls, there wasn't a day without a back and forth conversation and Greg always made himself available. Once decided, we didn't have to wait long to receive a quote which was really reasonable. It took a total of four days for his team (his brother was also part of it) to beat the rain and finish both decks on time. Result is fantastic! Greg really nailed it and my wife and I deeply thank him for the great outcome. He also scheduled a meeting with another person to have an awning installed (in progress). Soon enough, the whole family will be able to enjoy both decks for the rest of the summer, not feeling ashamed of the state of advanced decomposition in which they were before. Instead, we are now the proud owners of two beautiful balconies, thanks to him. Not to mention that they are now splinter-free, which makes it safer for our kids. I wouldn't question Greg's professionalism for one second. He stands by his work and asks for feedback, which demonstrates the seriousness of his business. Combine this quality with great communication skills, you have here the perfect guy for the job. By the way, the condo association is currently working on a plan to have him come over and fix our window frames and trims. Once you find your carpenter, you don't want to let him go, do you?

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
