Simply put, Dave has dedicated himself and got the job done right. He mounted a big 52 inch TV on the living room wall. He thoroughly assessed what needs to be done and got his job done perfectly. What I mean by perfect, for example, is that he won't just simply hang the TV and get out. Rather, he would make sure that a) it would be aesthetically pleasing, b) function well, and c) safe! I would love to hire him again for other type of repairs/projects as well!

Jaques was efficient and worked hard at removing the wallpaper from our living room and hallway. He considered the budget we were on, and even had time to discuss other potential projects when he came to see what needed to be done. He is professional and kind, and we were happy with the results!

BlueColor was the best decision I made for my project. The owner himself, Eddy came to do my estimate. At first, I just wanted to do some tile repairs but after my conversation with Eddy I knew BlueColor was the right company to re-tile my entire house. They help me picking the tile, went to the store with me to make sure I chose the materials correctly, and even helped me to set up the delivery of the tiles. When the tiles arrived at my house a few days later they were there to receive it and already had the entire floor prepared to be tiled!!! I was amazed how fast and efficient they were. I chose a very thin style of grout and the tiles are perfectly leveled. The most amazing part is that he did it all with us living in the house, he managed to do the project by parts and the only thing we had to do was to make sure we didn't step on the newly tiled area, things went so smooth. I am not a great picture taker so I could't include a picture here now but I will try to add a picture later on when my soon is in town. The crew was on time every day, and worked until late, always with the minimal level of noise and dust possible. After they were done with the project they cleaned most of it. Every night they always made sure that no tools were left around and kept us safe during the project for the entire time. I am definitely hiring them for my other projects!!!

Jeff is a talented and creative woodworker. He has accomplished several projects for us in a house built around 1756. From restoring an antique window to matching original woodwork and trim to a built-in media center that fits with the room, his work is always professional and top quality. Added bonus, he is a genuine pleasure to work with.

We just finished a complete gut renovation of our first house with BBC and we are very happy with the results. There was not a room in the house that we did not touch during the course of this project. Throughout the process, Eduardo Muniz was very professional and courteous with me and my wife. Eduardo was very hip and modern in his design ideas. He helped us configure and design our home to maximize the space and meet our needs. Thanks to BBC, we love our new home and look forward to many years inside this house.

Excellent experience so far. Corey at HouseWorx instills confidence and mobilizes quickly! He's worked with us to develop a plan for our kitchen model that includes taking down a load bearing wall to open up the floor plan in our newly purchased house. He connected us with a kitchen designer who helped us design a beautiful cabinet solution that works within our budget. And then he even helped us obtain the best deal on the cabinets. Cabinets have been ordered, permits are being pulled, and demolition is scheduled to start soon. And all this has happened in less than 2 weeks. I'm very excited to be working with HouseWorks on this project and can't wait to see the transformation.

Kevin, Enrique and the team were great. We had them prep and paint a dining room, family room, living room, foyer, stairway and hallway that had not been touched in 20 years. They provided high quality work, completed the project quickly and on schedule, and did so at a fair price.

Ralph did a number of jobs for us. First he painted just about the whole apartment (living room/dining room/kitchen/pantry/halls). That was great, but having him do some extra odd jobs helped tremendously instead of hiring another person to put in a ceiling light and fan and a folding closet door. What was good was that I didn't have to worry about getting paint/materials and supervising. He did all that and did the job in a shorter period of time than I had anticipated. Easy to work/plan with and he just didn't do the work, but had suggestions which I appreciated. He even washed the windows after he was all done painting! That's all we had to do so far, but would hire Ralph if I need him again.

Very pleased with Bob and his crew. After two years of being jerked around by various contractors and friends who said they could "easily do this" we finally found RM Paolino Construction. Bob met with us on a Saturday and gave us a detailed estimate with some great cost-saving design changes for our kitchen and bathroom. We signed a contract that following Friday and by Monday morning our bathroom was gutted and on its way. What a relief it's been to deal with a real contractor after all time we wasted with other so called "professionals". Bob has kept us up to speed every step of the way and the bathroom looks great. Can't wait for kitchen to start. Highly recommend RM Construction to anyone looking for a professional, full service contractor who won't give you the run around!

This is the first time I hired a carpenter for breaking two closets and making a opening between kitchen and living room (it is a baring wall) He is easy to communicate. Came, check and gave quote. from next day they started work and finished within 2 days. Before left they cleaned everything properly and also put some salt on my stairs. My wife and I was amazed. Thanks I got them. I am planning to do some other carpentry works.

We hired Joe to redo our old stairs in our home. They needed A LOT of work and he did an unbelievable job- custom fitting each stair, working with me to determine a color and even increasing the size of the stairs to give us a bit more room. He was extremely respectful of our home - very neat and clean, always closing doors when going in and out, etc. Reallt appreciated his hard work and would definitely recommend him for any of your home jobs.

Christian did an amazing job on the crown molding in our new house. He was extremely responsive (we had a very little time to get the work done before moving in), listened carefully to what we wanted, provided his thoughts/expertise to ensure the finished product was what we wanted and did a meticulous job on the execution. Many of our early visitors have commented that the "crown molding makes the rooms" (Christian helped us with four rooms). We would hire him again without hesitation (in fact, we've already asked him to help us with several other projects and referred him to friends)!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
