There is no need for you to call anyone else! Najera and his team are the people you want to work with. We originally posted for help with painting in our house, but we were also looking separately for a contractor to remove a wall between two bedrooms, repair the molding and the floor, and enclose one side of a jack and jill bathroom. Najera responded to me right away and continued this level of communication throughout our work together. When we learned Najera and his team also help with this type of work, we decided to work with him for everything. And we are so glad we did!! He and his team were amazing. They are fast, professional, extremely skilled, and seamless in all the work they do. His prices were HALF what the contractors quoted us for the construction. Najera and his team did such an incredible job with the construction that it appears as if the new room was always that way. He and his team painted our entire house, top to bottom, and their work is, simply put, the very best. When everything was finished, we even found another project for Najera and his team, which again was seamless, fast, and of the highest quality. Working with Najera is an absolute pleasure, and he has become like family to us. We will call him for everything we need from now on. Thank you for our beautiful home, Najera!

The projects that being done were fixing the water damaged hardwood floor, install shades and curtain rods, replaced screen door, laying floor for attic space, and many small projects. D.J.'s service fee is very reasonable. He is smart and knowledgeable. He tried to find ways that can save money for me but was still able to finished the project perfectly. He is honest and responsible. He pays close attention to details on what he is doing. He was very patience in answering my questions. He showed me how to fix things if I wanted to do it myself. He is willing to work around my schedule, even means that he has to make multiple trips to my house for the projects. He is pleasant to work with. He has no problems changing things around with my requests even after he already completed the project. He helped me out many things that were not his job related. I Definitely will have him back again when I have more projects needed to be done.

Tom installed one new prehung exterior door (with full glass) in concrete opening that was too small for standard size prehung. He pretty much had to rebuild the entire frame & custom fit to opening & remove some floor tile to get enough height. He did an awesome job! He completed the job with exterior & interior trim. Love this door! He also patched & rehung my existing wood front door which had some damage to bottom & didn't close properly. Thanks tom!

First I wanted to select all 5 options for what I liked about Gee & Gee. Durell was punctual, responsive, and professional as was his work crew. They provided exceptional quality work at a very reasonable rate. I can’t say enough about how pleased my wife and I are with the job they did for us-too bad we don’t have more work to give him and his crew! His response to my inquiry was almost immediate- we talked on a Saturday and he had our 24’x36’ pavilion floor set up and poured by the very next Tuesday (3 days later). Great job and we are very pleased. He has my highest recommendation! Thanks for a job well done!

We hired Quality Control Construction Services, LLC to remodel our Den, and they accomplished that task in the window which we demanded, and did so in a most professional manner. Mr. Dain carried out our instructions, for this top-to-bottom job to the letter, offering his professional advice where he felt it was required, always working closely with us to turn the original, dark, 1971-outfitted, ceiling-to-floor knotty pine paneled room into a new, brighter and inviting space. These professionals removed our old 'cottage cheese' ceiling, effected necessary repairs, sanded it smooth painted it & installed a new ceiling fan; then went on to remove the paneling down to chair rail height, and installing sheetrock with crown molding, using corner blocks to create a more sophisticated appearance. Chair rail and trim moulding was added and the remaining woodwork was also painted, as was the original red brick fireplace. After installing a new mantel, the original red brick hearth and its surround was finished with a more modern tile. As a finale, the floor was stripped of its glossy finish, thoroughly sanded, tacked-off with mineral spirits and re-sealed with satin finish polyurethane. I would like to add that Mr. Dain's company exercised extreme care when removing the genuine pine paneling so it could be re-purposed into donor homes in which they do volunteer carpentry. In closing, my wife and I have to say we would definitely place Quality Control Construction Services LLC at the top of any list should we seek bids on further remodeling projects.

The experience that we had with Punchman was absolutely wonderful! They re-did two bathrooms, which included moving sinks, toilets, bathtubs and tile work. They also added a laundry room, laid hardwood floors and did some other little things. The thing that impressed us the most was there quality of work, their timeliness and the importance that they put on for meeting the deadline. We were originally told by another contractor that we would not be able to be in our house by Christmas due to bathroom issue, but Punchman came in and had us completely finished in about 2 weeks. They also called over the Thanksgiving holiday just to make sure everything was perfect. We would highly recommend Punchman for any home project and we will never question ourself again for who to use to work on our house.

Will Freeman and his company have done several jobs for us. They installed ceramic tile and back splash in our kitchen and did a wonderful job. He and his partner were very detail oriented and took the time needed to make sure the job was done right. We have had many comments on their work. Will also laid brick flooring on our patio creating a design that we love. Can't say enough about how hard he worked and what a great job he did.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
