Several words come to mind when I think Shawn and how he accomplished our full bathroom renovation, those words being; meticulous, thorough, communicative, and just plain talented. I am a practicing Architect that has lived in Charleston for close to 20 years (practicing all 20) and have been around quite a few job sites. I have seen poor work, decent work, and acceptable work. Shawn’s work is outstanding. My wife, who is an interior designer for a local high end home Architect, was elated to see the bathroom come together. Shawn worked hard on every detail (and I have to admit it’s VERY hard working for an Architect and Interior Designer), but he communicated well and we are very pleased with the outcome. As with every renovation, there are unforeseen conditions. Shawn easily guided us through these (as well as other existing issues he found and corrected along the way) and we couldn’t be more pleased. I cannot recommend Shawn enough for any sort of bathroom renovation and/or tile install. He is truly a master craftsman. We are looking forward for him to come back for another project.

We asked for help on very short notice as our tile guy walked out and left shoddy incomplete work. A&A Contractor's came to our aid immediately. He showed up on time and went above and beyond completing the partial job, fixing the shoddy work, and finishing a floor meticulously. We are very happy with the finished product. It was worth every reasonable penny!

We hired Charleston Premier Workz to install hardwood floor, finish and tile the fireplace and the kitchen in our large condo. JR and his team were fast and efficient. Even when one of his employees got sick, JR took it upon himself to finish tiling and gave us his very best work. His team was very professional and accomidated all the small details that I requested. JR's work exceeded our expectations and our condo looks better than we have ever imagined. We highly recommend hiring Charleston Premier Workz for any job that you have regardless of the size.

I hired Matt with Major Improvements to remodel bathroom bathtub and shower. Project included removal of tub, install new tile on walls and floor, new fixtures- new walk in shower. Matt exceeded all of expectations. His price was reasonable and every item was checked off as he completed it. I was impressed by his attention to detail and the quality of his workmanship. Matt regularly asked our opinion and we were involved in all decisions. His team was highly professional, courteous and cleaned up daily after each day. I received exceptional value for the cost of the project. I highly recommend Matt for any home improvement projects.

This by far has been the very best experience we have had in 30 years of doing home remodeling/repairs. Rob and Tony are both very professional and I simply can not say enough about how relieved I am to find a company like this to use for future improvements. We had our very large kitchen tiled and Rob came with his showroom and let me look at samples, was upfront about cost and the time required to complete the job and what it would entail (meaning everything gets moved around and out of place temporarily).. I never felt one second of angst or discomfort even with all the work being done (taking out of the flooring that was down, scraping, incredible amount of work). Robs plumber showed up early to reinstall the toilet in sink in the bathroom off the kitchen and patiently waited for Tony to finish that room instead of blowing it off and rescheduling for another day (which would of put that room out of commission even longer). The final product is just beautiful, precisely done and again I couldn't ask for a better team. Tony was there working hard, but never in the way and personable and after many years of workers doing things in our homes, I just will not use anyone else. Thanks FloorCoverings International! I look forward to new carpet soon, and new tile down in our front hall..even sooner.

Hired John (owner) repair and retire my shower. It involved taking up and replacing marble tile, taking out and reinstalling frameless glass shower door and panel and replacing pan. He did a beautiful job. Left a clean work area and was trustworthy. We hardly knew he was there! Highly recommend. Will use again and for other types of services as well.

I am redoing my bathroom and needed help with the majority of the project. MCB did the demo, built the shower pan, tiled the shower and hung the drywall in the rest of the bathroom. The laid the rest of the floor in the bathroom which I will tile myself. I appreciate that they worked with me to do the things I cannot but let me do the work that I can. Everyone was friendly and they took the time to answer my questions about what they were doing as well as giving me some guidance on the next steps that I will do myself. I cannot directly compare pricing with other companies as I looked at a number of different options. However, one thing that I asked everyone was to do the demo. For demo, MCB was much cheaper and it took them a lot less time than the other companies said that it would take to do the work.

We have very happy with not only Jelena's service (prompt correspondence and professionalism) but her ideas and design options as well. She listened to exactly what we were looking for, made her own suggestions and in the end came up with great options for us to choose. We had her plan out our living room decor and when we're ready we plan to have her help us out with decorating our master bedroom.

From my personal experience, John Reid is honest, friendly, dependable and produces what he promises. He is a gentleman and so is his son, Jay, who works with him. They removed carpeting from 3 floors of my home and replaced it with tile on the first floor and hardwood flooring on the upper 2 floors. They stained the steps, banister rails, and all woodwork to match the flooring. Prior to that, I had an unfortunate incident. My washing machine on the 2nd floor was not installed properly by others and it was leaking through the kitchen ceiling on the 1st floor. John Reid was recommended by a close friend and he took care of the proper machine hook up and the ceiling repair. The team also removed an existing electric fireplace and installed much needed shelving. If you go with Blue Anchor Builders, I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed.

Johnas completely rebuilt my tile shower. He was extremely professional and responsive to any concerns I had, always kept me up to speed, and set realistic expectations. His #1 concern was my happiness with the finished product and my wife and I are totally thrilled! Johnas is a completely honest and totally trustworthy person, I would recommend him (and have) to my own family.

Tom did such an amazing job tiling all three of our bathrooms! He was very easy and flexible to work with and was always on time. He answered all our questions and kept us informed of anything that way going on with the work. We were very impressed with his professionalism and the quality of his work. Also his pricing was much more reasonable then other contractors we hand inquired about. Two thumbs up for Tom. We have already referred several of our neighbors to him for projects within their homes as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
