We asked for help on very short notice as our tile guy walked out and left shoddy incomplete work. A&A Contractor's came to our aid immediately. He showed up on time and went above and beyond completing the partial job, fixing the shoddy work, and finishing a floor meticulously. We are very happy with the finished product. It was worth every reasonable penny!

I hired Anthony to add chair rail and picture box molding to around 1500 square feet of my father's condo in downtown Charleston. During the course of the project, I added painting the entire unit to the scope of work. I had a very clear view of what I wanted and had even sketched out the number of boxes that I thought would be required for each wall. Anthony responded to my Thumbtack post immediately and was very responsive from the beginning. Because I live in Charlotte, the vast majority of this project was completed in my physical absence. Anthony could not have been better to work with. The one time we met in person before the start of the project, he met with me to discuss what I wanted and returned later that day with samples and to tape off the longest wall to show me what he had in mind based on my estimates and diagrams. I left Charleston confident that my father’s project was in the right hands. Working with Anthony was a real pleasure. He is a true professional and took immediate ownership of the project. It was clear that he expected to deliver a finished project that we would both appreciate. Anthony came up with thoughtful, well considered solutions to a number of problems – difficult to move outlets, a change in ceiling height. His attention to detail was truly impressive. His team wrapped switch plates in molding and modified measurements to accommodate details in the walls. Anthony raised issues where he saw them and was confident in his recommendations. He sent photos and initiated discussions when he had concerns about the direction of the project, but was gracious in those instances when I wanted to move forward in a manner not completely in line with his thoughts. I appreciated his interest in the project and his willingness to share his experience with me. The result was definitely better than my initial plan because of his input. He turned my idea for adding some detail to expansive blank condo walls into a truly custom trim treatment that looks like it should have always been there. I could not stop smiling when I finally returned to see the finished product. Anthony’s team was also excellent based on my father’s reporting and the work I saw myself. They used the designated work areas and took enormous care with my father and step mother’s personal items and hardwood floors (a particular concern for my step mother). I am looking forward to working with Anthony and his team in the future both on built-ins for this project and other projects. I cannot recommend Anthony and his team highly enough!

In November of 2016 we bought a new home and wanted to replace the floors. We hired Coastal Renovations, who was recommended to us by a friend of ours. Sam was very professional and helpful. They removed the old flooring and installed new hardwood. They worked at our place for three days and the results were amazing. We are very happy with their work and price, and will definitely hire them again. Thank you Sam for the great work!

Steve surprised me with his punctuality, professionalism, excellent finished product and his thoughts about improving my property to help sell my property quicker. He works very efficiently and doesn't waste time with any banter. I even brought in another contractor after the job was finished and even he was impressed with the job that Steve had completed. I have recommend him to someone who wants new floors installed on a four bedroom condo. I will use him again instantly. Great job Steve and Thanks,

My home was affected by the October 2015 Charleston “1,000 year flood” just one month after major breast cancer reconstructive surgery. My husband, son, and I (including our two dogs) were forced to evacuate our home with little warning and make decisions we were not expecting to make on such short notice. I met Henry Ravenel through a mutual acquaintance approximately one week after our home was flooded. I knew from the first moment I met Henry I could trust The Ravenel Group would provide high-quality renovation/reconstruction of our home. Knowing that I recently had surgery, Henry was diligent in ensuring this “project” was completed in a timely fashion and with the quality I expected. After spending 22 years in the military and undergoing extensive breast cancer treatment, I was left with some control issues that overlapped with my level of perfectionism. Throughout the entire process, Henry allowed me to communicate with him directly. This belayed any fears I had about the process (and estimated completion) during each step of the way. Henry consistently handled my anxiety, with concerns that this project would be completed on time and without “cutting corners.” He took into consideration my situation (healing from surgery) and that the displacement from my home had not just a mental impact on me but physical as well. A bonus to using The Ravenel Group was that Henry was happy to provide input when I asked for advice regarding choices of the new hardwood floors, window casings, paint colors, kitchen cabinets, etc. Essentially, we used this opportunity to renovate 90% of our home, to include removing all of the popcorn ceilings. I was also aware of costs every step of the way, thanks to Henry’s partner, Chris Delpit, who provided detailed invoices and “Change Orders” when promised. Henry’s level of professionalism, sense of style, and suggestions for change were definitely indicators for my husband and me that we made the right choice in hiring The Ravenel Group. We were fortunate we found The Ravenel Group during a time when the availability of high-quality, reasonably priced and honest contractors was very limited. We are thrilled with the look and quality of our “new” home and highly recommend The Ravenel Group for both small and large projects.

I am redoing my bathroom and needed help with the majority of the project. MCB did the demo, built the shower pan, tiled the shower and hung the drywall in the rest of the bathroom. The laid the rest of the floor in the bathroom which I will tile myself. I appreciate that they worked with me to do the things I cannot but let me do the work that I can. Everyone was friendly and they took the time to answer my questions about what they were doing as well as giving me some guidance on the next steps that I will do myself. I cannot directly compare pricing with other companies as I looked at a number of different options. However, one thing that I asked everyone was to do the demo. For demo, MCB was much cheaper and it took them a lot less time than the other companies said that it would take to do the work.

THIS GUY GETS THE JOB DONE!!! Not only was John cordial, honest and hardworking, but he was clean! At the end of each day, my home looked as it did before he came in to work on the bathroom renovation. John tiled the floor, drywalled, painted and did numerous other jobs pertaining to the renovation. My husband and I were very pleased and for the first time ever didn't get in a fight because of construction work in our home!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
