Joyce is a true godsend. She was extremely helpful when my family moved to Nashville 3 years ago. She went out of her way to help us find a rental even though she didn't make anything off of the rental. When we were ready to buy we wouldn't think of any other realtor. Joyce again impressed. Even though it was two years later she remembered my daughters name and went all over town at any hour due to my hectic schedule to show us houses. I wouldn't use any other realtor in town. My family meet Steve for the first time, twice in the same day in our community. He played games with my family at the park. At the end of several hours of games played with Steve and his son he told us he was a realtor and gave us his card and said if he could ever be of service to us give him a call, well we tucked that card in the wallet. We were wanting to buy but needed to get a few ducks in a row first. About a year later, I had forgotten about that card, and had been approved for a loan and had been set up with a realtor from the loan company, well one visit with her and several delays of service made me remember STEVE!! I said, "hey honey, do you still have that mans card?" Sure enough he did. We called Steve right away and he remembered us and reminisced about the fun at the park that day. Steve is a real family man, whether its yours or his. I really enjoyed every meeting with Steve and left feeling confident that I would have the home I had always dreamed of, and I do. He is very prompt and makes himself available to cater around work schedules. I feel he went above and beyond for us.

Real estate agents and real estate brokers both help clients buy, sell, and rent residential and commercial properties. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, real estate brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Real estate agents cannot have their own real estate office and must work under a broker. Real estate brokers often have real estate firms and employ real estate agents. What should you look for in a real estate agent?

That said, you also want someone who can play hardball and maximize your real estate deal. Ask for references from recent clients, and be sure to call them.

What do real estate agents charge?

Real estate agents typically don’t charge a set rate to their clients, but rather earn a commission on the price of the final home sale. In traditional real estate, there is a buyer’s agent and a seller’s agent. The two agents receive 5 percent to 6 percent of the final home sale price and split it evenly, meaning they each earn roughly 2.5 percent to 3 percent of the total home sale. If you are a home seller, you may have fees associated with the sale that are above and beyond the commission the agents earn. The real estate agent may have you pay marketing fees, MLS fees, early cancellation fees, or more. Always ask pricing details before signing a contract so you clearly understand your financial obligations. Here are some of the average (and common) costs that can arise when selling a home:

  • Home inspection: $200-$350 or more, depending on region.
  • Home appraisal: $250-$400 or more, depending on region.
