Replaced almost entire house with vinyl plank (from carpet). Also included ripping out and replacing two sets of stairs (carpeted stairs to hardwood stairs). Joe did an absolutely incredible job - and this was a big job. His quoted price was right on the money and his estimated time to complete the job was accurate. We are a very private family and having Joe in our "space" daily turned out to be no big deal. He's a total professional and very hard worker. Can't actually say enough good - 6 stars out of 5!

Hardwood 3/4" floor install in master bedroom and walk in closet. Even when acts of God tried to slow them down they never skipped a beat and finished on time. Excellent installers with excellent work ethic and skills.

Brian did an excellent job of installing my hardwood floors, baseboards, and sheetrock patching. He even did the little extras, like rerunning a cable outlet, something I hadn't thought of. He did everything according to estimate, plus the extras. He is extremely easy to work with and just a pleasant individual.

Steven was very professional, and did a good job. I hired him to finish laying some engineered hardwood flooring. He showed up on time, and got right to work. I would recommend using him, and plan on using him again.

Just to let everyone know that Robert Sosa did a wonderful job at installing the microwave in my kitchen. Also, the hardwood floor. I also has Sosa and Sons install a new furnace and air-conditioning unit in my house, I appreciate his attitude and mindset and honest as he worked very hard to do the job correctly, I would highly recommend Mr Sosa to everyone for his total knowledge in the trade he does.

We recently hired Ron to finish our basement and install engineered hardwood flooring in our bedroom. We could not be happier with the work he has done! Our bedroom floors are absolutely gorgeous! He worked quickly and was very efficient, and was also very fair in his pricing. As for our basement, every day we look at it, we love it more and more. Ron does beautiful work, and is always readily available to discuss design options and give ideas and suggestions on how to make the basement even more beautiful than it already looks. Ron is very knowledgeable and professional in the work that he does, and we have been very glad we decided to hire him. I will be calling him to do further work in my home and recommending him to friends and family.

We couldn't be happier with the work! We installed hardwood oak floors cut from trees on our property and Kenny did a fantastic job of sanding, staining, and finishing some really rough wood. We would highly recommend TJ and Kenny to anyone needing floors finished!

I recently had my hardwood floors sanded and refinished in my 60 year old rancher. I wanted natural look - just poly, but after further inspection and because of some deep stains on the floor, they recommended going with a darker stain for a better result.

I have dealt with a lot of contractors and craftsmen throughout the years but Sean Ivan of Ivan Brothers construction remains at the top of my list. Sean has a gift for taking your vision, and making it come to life. I always saw the dark creepy walk-up attic of my Cape style home as the perfect place for a full length master bedroom suite with a bathroom and shower, office, dormers, skylights, built ins, hardwood floors vaulted ceilings etc. I was talked out of it by others, but once Sean and I met, and I described my vision to him, we hit the ground running, literally. An example of the kind of personal touch he provided included touring the surrounding neighborhood with me to see how we could match the exterior look of what I wanted to the aesthetic of my part of town. On the inside of the house , he listened and watched as I described my vision. Within days, he presented me with plans, and a timetable and a budget. Because of the skill and experience of Ivan Brothers, I was able to remain in my home while ½ my roof was torn completely off to be replaced on the backside by a shed dormer, and two doghouse dormers in front! Every aspect of this job was done with care, and a passion for turning my dream into a reality. All deadlines were met, materials ordered correctly, inspections, permitting etc, all went smoothly, and when we hit those inevitable bumps here and there, Sean saw to it that any issues were resolved immediately and personally. Sean was never too busy to answer a question, and even explain the how’s and why’s of what was going on. From roof shingles to subfloors, three way light switches to an antique pedestal sink, Sean and crew saw to every last detail. They were always prompt, professional, and left a clean space to start working in again the next day. As a homeowner of 20 yrs, I’ve dealt with my share of imitators, no-shows, take the money and runners, and the “oh by the way we’re going over budget a little here” types. I can say unequivocally Sean is none of these. He stands by his exceptional work, and he puts his name on it, as he is a man of his word. An old-school craftsman who gives you an honest days work – hard to find anymore, but that’s what you’ll get here. I highly recommend Ivan Brothers construction.

We needed a simple carpet installation in 3 rooms we have in a cabin renovation. We had had trouble finding anyone who was willing to do a smallish job out in the country. Charles and Lori were excited about the opportunity to get the job, were super polite, were punctual and the final price was the exact amount of the estimate. This was our first thumbtack experience and it was amazingly simple. I had 3 responses with offers within 24 hrs. The service people do have to pay a small (under $5) to make an offer to potential clients but Charles really was happy...as were we. I highly recommend this team. They do hardwood, brick, carpentry, renovations (which is impossible to find here in Knoxville now for some reason). A definite recommendation!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
