We hired Brad and he has been punctual, responsive and very understanding of our requirements. He has went out of his way to ensure we get the landscape design that will highlight our residence. We are looking forward to seeing the final product! We have just begun the initial stages of the landscape.

Devin responded within hours of my request (on a weekend evening). He was able to estimate and complete the job the next day removing a nest with 4 baby squirrels from my gutter and then blocking future entry. I will likely use him again...he handles practically everything oustide the house, including lawn and landscape work. A pleasure to deal with someone who has an obvious work ethic.

He gave me a very reasonable quote and went above and beyond to clean my gutters, install gutter guards, and reattach guttering that had come off of my house in two places. Quoted me half of what another was going to charge and did an excellent job! I will definitely hire him again to do work at my home.

Scott has done a wonderful job for us with landscaping our sloping backyard. He is currently laying a paver patio for us and we plan to have him landscape our sloping front yard as well. He has been great with his communication and is quick to take on new tasks.

Tommy was very responsive, timely, and incredibly knowledgeable about all things lawn and landscape related. He was easy to communicate with and offered reasonable, competitive rates. Tommy and his crew mowed and trimmed my lawn for the first time today and did a beautiful job! I intend to continue to use Trim Time not just for mowing/trimming, but landscape services as well. Give Tommy a call - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Chris's wife had a baby in middle of project. Only missed one day and came back and finished. We had good communication and Chris made sure I was happy with job before leaving. Chris has a lot of experience in many areas of landscaping. Have a few more projects lined up for him

I needed short notice landscaping, mowing and brush removal. Mitchell Davis responded to my Thumbtack request in five minutes with a fair price. He also came the same day as my request and completed a six hour job far ahead of schedule. I am extremely pleased with his work and his effort to clean up afterward. I have added his card to my list of professionals. He is an outstanding businessman and worker. I recommend him to anyone who needs landscaping work.

This company has completed numerous jobs for us. They painted the entire interior of our home, walls, doors and all the woodwork. The house looks great! They were clean, and organized just like I like it! They have done the landscaping on our yard for two years now and I'm just bragging here, but I think it rivals any in the whole neighborhood. This company really can't be beat. They are really good! Give them a try!

Another great job done these guys, relandscaped my entire yard, installed outdoor lighting in my trees, a fence, and removed a damaged tree. Zak has brilliant ideas and knows exactly how to fix drainage issues in a yard. Call him for any of your needs! Thank you guys a million!

Hired them to landscape an area in front of the house to offer more curb appeal and add some color and definition to an otherwise drab area. They were professional, reasonably priced and timely. They viewed the area, presented a proposal and had the area planted in 10 days. I would definitely hire them again.

Jacob Kelso did a great job of landscaping and cleaning out my flower bed. He replaced the old stone with new that I purchased and changed the old red mulch to black mulch. Job was completed in one day and Jacob was polite and helpful. Price was not increased on final completion and was what he quoted in the estimate. I would recommend East Tennessee Green Works for your landscaping job.

I hired Dream Gardens twice this summer to spruce up my newly bought home that I plan to use as a rental property. After they did such a great job on the backyard garden installation and fence, I decided to hire them to put a bed in the front as well, greatly improving my curb appeal. Jay was an excellent communicator from the start and really took into considerations my personal taste in plants and my budgetary constraints. He and his men worked very hard and efficiently and got the jobs done quickly. Many of my neighbors have commented on how nice the front looks now! I will definitely use dream gardens in the future

Jeremy and Ryan's work far exceeded my expectations. They are two knowledgeable hard working fellows that did a superlative job installing our trees.

ExperTrees has done many jobs for us at our new home including removing several large trees that were leaning towards the house, clearing the entire back yard that was totally overgrown and installing several stone patios. They show up when they say they will (which is hard to find!), and are very reasonable for the quality work that they do.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
