We recently hired Mr. Perkins and his crew to do a major bathroom remodel. Removing a sunken bath tub and creating a large walk in shower could have been a nightmare but the entire process was easier than we ever thought possible. Friendly, polite, detail oriented, easy to work with PLUS fair pricing. We would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Perkins and his company for any home repair project. Ok where do I start from? David Conrad is one of a kind..... My husband found him on thumbtack and of course my antennas went up... I was suspicious from day 1(after all u can't find good workmen via the Internet , right?) Ohh soo wrong....Our very first project dec 2014, was converting our carpet stairway to hardwood, then repairing the ceiling in the laundry room, then converting our unused attic space into a full bedroom suite with bathroom/toilet, and extending the upstairs hallway, then painting the bedrooms upstairs, then creating a laundry chute, then redoing the kitchen backsplash ....... (Unfortunately unable to upload pics with my review)..... David did all of these projects with integrity and he always gave a fair price we never felt cheated. And did I say the finished work of every single one of these project was flawless, obviously, otherwise we won't keep re-hiring him... He is easy to reach via text, calls and will respond promptly to your needs.... He would come back to any project until you are 100% satisfied with the work... He listens and is very good at taking your vision and making it a reality.....Go ahead and hire Mr Conrad and you won't be disappointed ...... It's ok, you can thank me later..😊 I have referred him to family, friends, colleagues, but I felt we owed it to thumbtack to leave a review here, thank you thumbtack for helping my family find a great "Jack of all trade" who happens to be very good at them.... The professionals at Memphis Local Handyman are awesome! I recently had two major projects completed by them — attic weatherization, as well as removal of all kitchen cabinetry and appliances (for Habitat donation) and prep for remodeling. Both projects were completed very capably and professionally on time and at a reasonable price. Highly recommend the team at Memphis Local Handyman!!!

Let me be clear, they in no way compensated me for this review that is about to be submitted. I placed an ad through Thumbtack for the creation of a door that was not necessarily done before. Due to space constraints, I wanted a pocket door, but didn't want to cut the wall, so I settled on a barn door, but wanted it split as to save space on either side. When I called Steve Miller, he said emphatically, "yeah, I think we can do that". He and Dave (one of his workers came) and after hearing my idea, you could tell the ideas were percolating. He came up with a great idea for the split barn door and gave me options of whether to go cheap or if I wanted it to be perfect what it would be (I chose the latter). To be honest, the price was well under what I thought it would be by many hundreds of dollars. I also asked about replacing the front door, of which he said was no problem. Steve guided me to the find the best wood people in town to make sure I got a quality product and made sure I got the best prices. All was set and done until I removed an embedded counter that showed broken tile and sheetrock underneath. No matter. . .Steve was able to fit that in as well. His tile guy, Nick, was phenomenal and was a true artist and professional in his work. They set the tile, fixed the grout, fixed the drywall and replaced the baseboards. It looks completely brand new. While doing this, they were able to install the new door, create the new split barn door (with Julie, who is an artist and visionary in her own right) leading the design of it. Even though I was a bad client (adding more jobs on top one right after the other), it was done better than when I bought the house. Steve is a great boss to his people. He treats them well, and more importantly, he respects and values their opinions and help. They revere him and it shows in the quality of work and efficiency of which the tasks were completed. More importantly, when you see their minds work (including Steve as the architect), it is like watching real artists work, not just laborers. They take great pride in their art and I am extremely happy with the products. When it was all completed, the price was not commensurate with the quality of work involved. He could have charged me a few hundred dollars more and it would have still been a value. Steve Miller and his crew are top professionals and I guarantee that anytime I need a project done, they are number one on the list. You will not go wrong hiring them and I can promise it will be an enjoyable experience for all.

I called Jon because my kitchen faucet was not working and needed to be replaced. Knowing how difficult it is not to have a working faucet in the kitchen, Jon said he would be over after he finished up on another job. I now have a brand new faucet and he also installed a bathroom faucet the same evening. He did a wonderful job on both projects. I will definitely be calling Belleau Sky Home Repair again to paint 2 bathrooms and install 2 more bathroom faucets.

Michael and Mason have done multiple jobs for me, they are very professional and such a delight to have around. They did an outstanding master bathroom renovation, rebuilt my shower using stone and it's so beautiful! Also, they replaced the tile in my main entry way, hall bathroom, spare bathroom and pantry with new ceramic tile, painted my entire house, hung shelving, built me a new large table in my crafting room, put up a new fence, laid an outdoor field stone patio, laid new mulch in my yard, and even removed a couple of trees! I like that I do not have to worry any more about who I need to call for needed repairs or improvement inside or outside of my home, I just call Michael now. All the photos of work they did is posted on their website! I am posting photos I took of the work but my photos do not do justice to the beautiful tile craftsmanship that was done. I highly recommend them for your home or yard improvements needs!

Tim Jameson has done work for me for several years. One job was painting my house including repairing rotten wood and painting the outside of my house and workshop building. He also did a bathroom project for me which included stripping wallpaper and repair walls and replaced some plumbing and removal of carpet and installation of tile on the floor. He also painted a paneled bedroom walls and trim. He has an excellent eye for color and has been very helpful in determining paint colors for me. He is a perfectionist and pays attention to detail. I will continue to use him for anything I need done around my house. He has a outgoing personality and is a joy to work with.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
