J&J was the first tree cutting service that responded to my inquiry. They were very friendly and professional. Their estimate was very reasonable. J&J worked with me and my landlord to have a tree removed, hauled and stump removal from the front yard and a tree trimmed in the backyard. When they arrived to complete the job they were fast and efficient. I would highly recommend J&J tree and lawn service. The next time the trees need to be trimmed I will call J&J!

These guys are awesome. I found them on Thumbtack after a tree destroyed my garage in midtown Memphis. I called them and spoke to Langston who was at my house within an hour to give me an estimate which turned out to be very reasonable. They had a crew here by the end of the week, and they did most of the work in one day. They even came back the next day to clean up. I wouId definitely use them again.

Overall I was satisfied with Mark and his crew and would not hesitate to use them again. They showed up on time, worked quickly and were flexible with our installation times working around our schedules. Comfortable with our dog running around and very friendly with our toddler and nonstop questions. 4/5 stars is given due to less attention to detail than I would prefer. The crew sacrificed a bit of quality for speediness. They installed a back splash VERY quickly, but while the thin set was drying and they departed there were several tiles I had to adjust to keep from drying out of place. Clean up also left a bit to be desired as I found a dozen small marble chips in the grass where they were cutting. However, that being said, I would MUCH rather of had this experience than a two day long affair of a slower one-man operation. The entire crew was very friendly, skilled and I felt comfortable leaving them in our home.

First time Thumbtack user. I live in Germantown and needed a company to take care of some tree trimming for me. Found the Thumbtack app and within minutes had people reaching out to me. Jared was very helpful and quickly came out and gave me a quote. I had two other companies I had to call multiple times to come out to take a look. With Jared, it was done in one phone call. On the day we scheduled the work, the guys got a late start due to some vehicle issues but they were responsive and let me know what was going on so I wasn't just sitting around waiting for them. When they got to work the tree cutting was really great! They cut back six trees around the perimeter of my house where limbs were hanging over my roof line. The guys were very professional and friendly and did a great job of cutting and cleanup afterwards. I would absolutely recommend them and plan to call on them again when I get ready to tackle the next tree project. Thanks Thumbtack and thanks to Arbor Country!

We hired Alex with Brown tree for our rental property in Memphis TN. He called on Friday and looked at the exterior of the unit on Saturday and call back with the price. Inform him that we need proof of his work and schedule to have the tree trim on December 21. I called and verified his general liability policy with Western World Insurance on Monday, December 18. We mailed his payment to our property manager so that he can pick it up on or after December 21, 2017. He texted the pictures before and after of two trees for verification purpose early this morning. I would highly recommend Alex for tree trimming work. His price is very reasonable. We will use him again for our other properties with tree issues if any in the future.

We were very happy with the work performed by Dustin with On the Scene. Once we hired them, they quickly performed the work (which looked great). They even went beyond the scope when they spent extra time hand cutting the lawn since it was too wet for heavier equipment. I think this speaks to their dedication to doing a good job.

Josh Walton's Tree Service did an outstanding job with trimming, limbing up, and cleaning up dead wood from 2 oak trees and cutting one down from our yard a total of 3 trees. I had gotten 5 quotes from local businesses/arborists and he matched the price of the lowest one. Josh was eager to get to job done and it was a job done right by his team. We are very satisfied with his services and would highly recommend him. He sent his insurance information and W9 to us before he started the job. He made sure to go over what he will be doing exactly and made sure we he understood what we wanted. He even went above and beyond to use the extra mulch from the stump grinding to fill in the uneven spots in our back yard which we did not ask him to do. He also stacked the extra wood neatly for us for fire wood from the tree we had cut down. He is a hard working man that will deliver above and beyond that deserves a chance to be hired. He will not disappoint you. He will make sure the job gets done and will make it right if it is not.

Arbor M.D. Tree Care

Arbor MD Tree Care was by far the greatest resource I could've asked far to do the job I needed. My small kitten, Milo, was stuck very high in a tree for over a day. I had exhausted all local resources - the Animal Humane Society, the Fire Department, etc - and was unsuccessful and losing hope. I called Arbor MD, however, and they were extremely willing and eager to come help. Both Mr. Cochran and another employee showed up within an hour, with more than sufficient gear to do the job. Both men were friendly, helpful, and quick with the entire process. Mr. Cochran ended up having to use a harness to get into the tree and get Milo down. While this was something I clearly would never have been able to do, he did it with ease. I honestly could not have asked for a better experience. These men were very generous with their time and graciously did something outside of their typical services. I highly recommend them for all tree service needs. They went above and beyond for me, and I know they will do the same for others in Memphis as well! Thanks again, Arbor MD!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

    • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
    • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
