Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming ranges anywhere from $75-$1,000. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

What is tree trimming vs. tree pruning?

The difference between tree trimming and tree pruning comes down to the intention and strategy in the two methods. Pruning often refers to the removal of branches deemed unnecessary or hazardous, and this process helps stimulate growth. Tree trimming focuses on removing overgrown branches. But this process can also help the tree receive more moisture and light.

A professional might recommend pruning and trimming at different times of year to stimulate growth or leverage the tree’s dormant period to slow new sprouting.

If a neighbor's tree falls on my property, who is responsible for removal?

The rules for liability when a neighbor's tree falls on your property may depend on the unique details of the situation. A common outcome is that the homeowner pays for the damage and removal. Homeowners insurance may cover a tree that fell into your yard from a wind storm. Check your local laws and insurance policy to find out.

How do you remove roots after tree removal?

Getting rid of tree roots can be tricky. There are methods for getting roots out yourself, but the labor involved will take several hours and is quite intensive. For this reason, it’s best to hire a pro to remove stumps and roots.

What do tree removal companies do with the wood?

Downed trees can have a number of different end destinations. The tree removal company may use it as firewood to sell to customers, or they may send it through a wood chipper to turn it into mulch. The tree may also wind up in a green landfill or biomass power plant. Alternatively, it could go to a lumber or chip mill.

Who is responsible for cutting overhanging tree branches?

You should check your local laws to determine who is responsible for cutting overhanging tree branches on your property. If possible, make an agreement with your neighbor(s) on who is responsible to trim back tree branches that cross property lines.

What are the advantages of cutting trees?

There are several advantages to responsible tree cutting. As trees age and stop producing seeds, cutting them down can prevent them from falling on valuable property like homes and cars. Additionally, cutting trees allows more sunlight to reach smaller trees below, giving them the opportunity to grow. And pruning your trees can help promote growth.

All and all did a good job but did not complete as promised. Asked to drop two trees and trim another. Dropped one and completed trim. When asked to just drop second tree he agreed but did not complete requested.

My experience with Acuna Tree Service was exceptional. Victor responded to my request within an hour and came to the house the same day to provide an estimate. We had one large oak tree and three pine trees trimmed. The crew did the work in about 6 hours. Very efficient and very professional.

I asked them to trim all the branches of a tree within 5 feet of my house. The team took great effort to make sure the tree looked uniform and allowed for enough shade. They cleaned up well and charged a very fair price.

J & J Tree Services were OUTSTANDING. They were tops in all the categories: professionalism, responsiveness, punctuality, work quality and value. This is a really professional group. It consists of a 5-8 man crew with experts in each aspect of tree and shrub trimming, including 3 men who were tree climbers. They quickly and easily took out a medium-sized dying tree without any damage to the azalea bed it was in. The same was true when they trimmed down multiple tree-sized holly bushes that also required climbing and were also in an azalea bed. Jose (the business owner and boss) was very knowledgable and gave me excellent suggestions for small changes to my original plan. He also let me add taking down a couple of branches on trees that were not in the original plan. The quality of their work was excellent. They have their own chipper which means that there was never much debris in the yard. Before leaving they used a blower to get rid of leaves, twigs and sawdust. When they left there was no debris to be cleaned up anywhere. I had gotten estimates from several tree trimmers, and the one from J & J was within a range that was very fair for the extent of the job and the quality of the workmanship. I will now call J & J directly for any tree trimming work I have. I give them my highest recommendation.

Had them over to trim two trees and remove one stump and all. They trimmed the two perfectly, and because they had not brought the equipment to remove the stump said they would have to come back later. I was a little worried they might not come back,, but just as planned they returned, removed the stump to perfection. I'll have them back for more jobs. They are a good hire!

MCB came promptly to quote my job (cutting down 5 trees and trimming a few others) and gave me a very competitive quote. Once they started, a job that was supposed to take a day at most turned into a 3 - 4 day ordeal and they ended up not cutting down one of my trees because they said the under quoted it. In return, they did reduce my cost and agreed to trim some additional branches from the tree they couldn't remove but 10 days later, they have not returned. Despite this, they were pleasant to work with and I think their hearts were in the right place, I just got the impression throughout the project that they had perhaps bitten off more than they could chew.

I was very impressed with these men. They trimmed my trees and took down a huge tree in my back yard. They had to use a crane and bring the tree, piece by piece, over my house and neighbors house and did so with perfection. The second that portion of the tree is down the guys begin cutting the limbs off to mulch and the larger log is set aside. They clean up after each piece. I timed them one time and in 8 minutes they had one section totally cleared. They work so well together it was a joy to watch. When the job was finished you would never have known a major tree project had occurred. My yard and street was spotless. I will absolutely call them the next time I have more tree needs.

This was so easy! I heard about Thumbtack and decided to give it a try. I have a huge peach tree on the side yard of my house. It has grown like crazy and I just kept forgetting to hire someone at the precise time of year that pruning needs to be done. But not this year and I am glad that I remembered. I entered the description and service I needed into the Thumtack app and within a day, I got a response --- an email from J & J Lawn Mowing and Tree Trimming. Mr Jose was very polite and he came by to look at the tree and offer a price the very next day! Of course I was pleased with his offer and he showed up 2 days later as planned. They were done within 2 hours -- branches and leaves on his truck, yard raked into place. The tree looks so much better than before. It looks like a tree instead of a huge bush. Mr Jose even offered tips for reshaping the tree after the next season. Such a kind man and his crew was polite too. I will definitely call them again! Thank you again Mr Jose.

We had a great experience. Rain didn’t allow us to have the trees trimmed on the date we scheduled and Victor promptly contacted us and offered follow up dates. When my family schedule wouldn’t allow him to start at 9 am he accommodated a 10:30 am start time. Real professional. They hauled off the branches. I’m very happy with the work they did.
