When I found Rob Atkins, I was an award-winning teacher who had been let go. I felt like I had lost my identity because I thought of myself as a teacher and then I wasn't. I found a probationary job educating adults in leadership skills in a non-academic setting. I contacted him to see if I could add some focus, leadership, and a professional image to my life. He has done much more. Thanks to him, I have more clarity in my personal and professional life. I realize I always had confidence and leadership ability but was just afraid to show it and was oblivious to it. I know more about how to navigate outside of the classroom, and I am not looking back! As a result, I have now been retained in my current job, and I look forward to the opportunities it will present! The religious aspect is also what I needed to hear since it has too often taken a back burner to my career. Rob is able to zero in on exactly what you need to move forward in your life and career. He recommends books, courses of action, and even what to say in certain situations. His advice is concrete and specific, and not just a "pep talk." Thank you, Rob, for everything! I highly recommend Rob Atkins as a life coach! Danielle Blount, Ed. D.

There are many reasons to hire Bill & iCoachLife for your career/life coaching needs, but out of those many reasons, the most important is Bill's genuine authenticity. This business is not a side gig for Bill, it's his primary focus and I've rarely met someone with his energy and positive outlook on life and the lives of his clients. No matter what state of mind you are in when you walk into a session w/ Bill, you'll leave there feeling empowered to tackle the many life challenges that are coming at you each day. Sometimes in life, we need someone outside of our immediate sphere of family, friends and colleagues to remind us how blessed we really are, and that each day is an OPPORTUNITY to create a better life, while being grateful for what we have already. Whatever it is that you are looking for in a life/career coach, consider Bill a catalyst to that discovery journey. Starting from the first session, he's 100% in your corner and truly wants to see you be successful.

Jake provided life coaching services while I pursued a career change and relocation. He asked insightful questions that helped me figure out which path was best for me short-term and long-term, and ensured I focused on all aspects of the transition (including financial/practical considerations) instead of being driven solely by emotion. His step by step approach helped me tackle a huge change in small, manageable pieces and allowed me to focus and be productive despite the anxiety/uncertainty I was feeling. Overall, it was a great experience. I was new to life coaching, but now realize how helpful it can be to have someone help you create structure in the midst of chaos.

Anna has worked with both of my children over the past three years. She helped raise my daughters ACT score up by three points. Anna was instrumental in helping my son with organization, task completion, and time management of his homework. She teaches strategies that the kids use for the rest of their student career. I would highly recommend Anna Thomas!!!

I have worked with Nancy Stevens in both overall life coaching as well as in regard to my health/wellness goals. Nancy was always a bright spot in our sessions. These sessions were always relaxed and friendly but she did not hesitate to ask the tough questions...questions that often left me thinking on them days after. They were not just thought provoking but also encouraged me to make some small and major changes in my life, my career and my overall outlook. Most importantly, I have found through our sessions what I desire to be my life story and how I can actively work toward achieving it. While recognizing and acknowledging the difficult issues/issues imposed upon me, she has helped me see how to deal with them proactively. They are not my story; they are not who I am. I have moved forward in many ways since first meeting Nancy. As far as my health and wellness, I appreciate that Nancy has been so knowledgable with regard to not just exercise but to a diet which is most beneficial to my specific situation (age and thyroid issues). I am unable to think of anything that Nancy could have done better. It's intimidating to work with someone like this...to share your hopes dreams, insecurities. However, I was instantly at ease with Nancy. She proved to be knowledgable, caring, encouraging, and, best of all, proactive. During my work with her, I came to understand ways in which I was allowing myself to be a victim in my own life. She gave me the tools to take back authority over my life and my story. I wouldn't hesitate to send anyone her way!

Dr. A. has a positive impact on my life. She taught me to be a risk taker which can be construed as being unstable but that’s not the case. I also learned how to apply those wisdom tips to make improvements in my life. She inspired and encouraged me to seek higher education in my career, end result I earned a Master's degree in Reading and I'm certified to teach reading K-12. I am very happy with my career now and appreciate the value that I possess.

I am so grateful to Gabriel for his guidance. I was at a point in my career where I felt like I was going nowhere. I knew that I wanted to take my career to the next level but I had no idea where to begin. Gabriel helped me define my goals and organize my priorities. He offered suggestions that I would have never thought of on my own. With his help, I gained the confidence that I needed to pursue new opportunities and in a short time I landed the career advancement that was looking for. Anytime that I felt discouraged during my journey, Gabriel was there to lift me up and offer helpful advice. On my own, I was working hard on a lot of different things and felt overwhelmed. Gabriel helped me to focus on the right things and work smarter. I highly recommend Gabriel’s consultation! It was the best decision that I have made in my career.

Career counseling: overall and regarding a specific opportunity. The resume feedback and suggestions were excellent. It was so helpful to have someone ask the important questions and help me see gaps. I know my job and industry so well that I forget what details might require a little more description for review outside my current place of employment. Regarding a specific opportunity- the discussion was really helpful. To be given the chance to talk it through with someone who is solely invested in helping me make a good decision (my husband struggled to let go of what it would mean to move and get a new job himself). Talking through what the position offered and where it could take me next was time really well spent. Additionally talking through what kind of compensation I wanted/needed was enlightening and great practice for the conversation with the recruiter. I would absolutely reach out again. This was a great experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.
