Dutch got us out of a sticky situation last year. We had our bathroom destroyed during mold remediation, and the first contractor bailed on us with walls and ceiling missing from our house. Dutch rebuilt our bathroom - with good craftsmanship and very quickly. Fair prices as well.

Steve was hired to to do what we thought was a simple tile job, replacing missing/damaged tiles to the shower wall in our recently purchased home. After removing the old tile, we were shocked to find out that the walls were totally rotted out! Upon further inspection he discovered the floor (and subflooring) under the tub was rotted also! The cause of all the water damage? Old, rusty deteriorated plumbing fixtures (pipes, drains faucets) that were hidden from plain view. Steve "held our hand" every step of the way, assuring us through his calm demeanor, expertise and skill as he spent the next three days tearing out all old bath and shower components (including floors and walls) and totally rebuilding and installing the new shower and tub! Knowing we were first time homeowners who just moved in, he was extremely generous with the bill he presented to us. We will definitely call on him for future repairs/remodel projects!

I had initially hired a handyman to do some work around our new house, and there was some drywall that was stained from an old leak. Our handyman tried to repair it, but ran into some issues getting it flush on the ceiling. While he knew drywall, he was not an expert. In comes Mike with MVM Construction, and he was able to swing by, take a look, give me a reasonable quote, and had guys there by that afternoon since I was hoping to get it done before move in! Whatever issue our handyman ran into was no problem for Mike's guys. They quickly patched things up, and it looked beautiful. As they were doing the work they made some marks on the wall, so while the drywall mud was drying, they took a trip to the store, got a perfect match on the paint color for the wall, and fixed that, too! That gave them the time to put on the second coat of mud, get the ceiling painted, and you'd never know the drywall was cut out. Very impressive work. The quote was a little higher than others I had received, but it was worth every penny.

John and his crew were hired to fix and complete a drywall installation (including mud and tape) that a previous company abandoned me on. I must say, John and his crew were great! They took what was a mess left by the other contractor and made it a masterpiece. It is nearly impossible to tell where the seams are in the walls now that they are painted! They took great care in making sure the new floors were protected before starting. Upon leaving they made sure everything was spotless and hauled away all the debris. I will certainly be recommending and using John for my future construction needs!

Paul just finished painting all interior walls in our new house, and he was quick and did an excellent job. Flexible and easy to communicate with. He even made sure to come and wrap up the finishing touches for us right after the snow storm we just had - he is dedicated to his craft. Definitely will recommend him and be requesting wood work in the future!

Fernando and his associate did a great job in painting all of the walls in my 1200 sq ft house. He finished the work a day earlier than anticipated and exceeded my expectations. His price was fair and the quality of the work is superb. I would hire Fernando again for future painting projects and recommend him to anyone needing their place painted.

Jason did a great job repairing damage caused by a leaking urinal in my warehouse facility. He was extremely professional, courteous and did an exceptional job repairing the holes and water damage. He made three separate trips to ensure the dry-wall was repaired properly and charged a fair rate. I will use him here at work and personally going forward.

Bob recently did a substantial amount of work on our house, and he did a fantastic job. He painted our upstairs bedroom - a large, converted attic space with lots of complicated nooks and crannies. He also painted our dining room. All of this included wall and ceiling work. A++ would hire again.

Great company to work with. Kept all timing committments and provided a quality product with excellent follow-up. Joe is creative and performed the work by hand one stone at a time....selecting, cutting, color and size matching and finally assembling a beautiful rock water wall. Clean-up work left the area looking as good as the day work began. Couldn't be happier with the results. Will definately use again as future hardscape projects come around.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

      • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
      • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

      • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
      • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
      • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
